Un personaje del que no se habla mucho en la historia pero que tiene relevancia en la vida de Levi es Kuchel Ackerman, su madre.
Kuchel vivía en la ciudad subterránea. Bajo el seudónimo de Olimpia, se dedicaba a la prostitución para sobrevivir allí.
Se dice que Levi es el resultado de uno de sus encuentros con uno de sus clientes y que, en lugar de deshacerse de él, decidió tener al bebé.
Del padre de Levi no se hace ninguna mención por lo que nada se sabe de él.
Ahora bien, siendo los Ackerman un clan que estaba casi extinto ya que había interés en hacerlos desaparecer ya que no podían ser doblegados ni controlados por el Rey, los que quedaban y eran parte de las dos ramas del clan tomaron diferentes rumbos.
Una rama del clan Ackerman, representado por el padre de Mikasa, se fue a las montañas mientras que los que quedaban de la otra rama, estaban en la ciudad (Kenny y su abuelo) y en la ciudad subterránea (Kuchel).
¿Por qué Kuchel no buscaría apoyo en su hermano para encontrar la forma de salir de la ciudad subterránea? Posiblemente, porque pensó que mientras se mantuvieran allí bajo perfil, Levi tendría más posibilidades de sobrevivir que si estaba en la superficie al alcance más próximo de su enemigo.
Allí, en medio de la miseria y la violencia que reinaba en ese sitio, fue criando a Levi hasta que una enfermedad terminó con su vida y es encontrada por Kenny, quien va a visitarla y se encuentra con su cadáver y con un Levi pequeño, prácticamente muriendo de hambre en la misma habitación.
Muy poco se conoce de esa etapa en la vida de Levi. Tal vez con el nuevo manga que pronto saldrá al público, se pueda conocer más sobre su historia.
Mientras, hice un fanart de Kuchel disfrutando la compañía de Levi siendo un bebé. Siempre me dio la impresión que, a pesar de las circunstancias, ella era feliz con su hijo y quise plasmar eso en la escena.
Utilicé brochas de lápices acuarelables y tizas pasteles para suavizar la escena y que diera la sensación de ser un recuerdo. Tal vez de los últimos que tuvo Kuchel antes de dejar a Levi solo.

A character not often mentioned in history but of significance in Levi's life is Kuchel Ackerman, his mother.
Kuchel lived in the underground city. Under the pseudonym Olimpia, she engaged in prostitution to survive there.
It is said that Levi is the result of one of her encounters with a client and that, instead of getting rid of him, she decided to have the baby.
No mention is made of Levi's father, so nothing is known about him.
Now, the Ackerman clan was nearly extinct as there was an interest in making them disappear since they could not be subdued or controlled by the King. Those who remained and were part of the two branches of the clan took different paths.
One branch of the Ackerman clan, represented by Mikasa's father, went to the mountains, while those remaining from the other branch were in the city (Kenny and his grandfather) and in the underground city (Kuchel).
Why didn't Kuchel seek support from her brother to find a way out of the underground city? Possibly because she thought that as long as they maintained a low profile there, Levi would have a better chance of survival than if he were on the surface within closer reach of their enemy.
There, amidst the misery and violence that prevailed in that place, she raised Levi until an illness ended her life, and she was found by Kenny, who went to visit her and found her corpse and a small, practically starving Levi in the same room.
Very little is known about that stage in Levi's life. Perhaps with the new manga that will soon be released to the public, more about his story can be known.
Meanwhile, I made a fanart of Kuchel enjoying the company of baby Levi. I always got the impression that, despite the circumstances, she was happy with her son, and I wanted to capture that in the scene.
I used watercolor pencil brushes and pastel chalks to soften the scene and give the feeling of being a memory. Perhaps one of the last ones Kuchel had before leaving Levi alone.
