Spring Big Garbage Collection Day
In my area, spring and autumn are big clean-up times facilitated by the municipal government. It's an opportunity to declutter furniture, large electrical appliances, junk, and more. As I've mentioned in my previous writing about decluttering, I went through the challenging task of getting rid of various items.
The previous owners of my house seemed to have enjoyed creating and building numerous things for both the inside and outside of the house. While we were renting the house, we were unable to dispose of their leftover belongings. However, after purchasing the house, we were finally able to part with many of those items.
We spent quite a long time cleaning up their belongings, especially the heavy wooden items for the outside of the house. Firstly, we had to take them down, remove nails or metal parts from the wood, and prepare them for easy and safe pickup by the garbage collectors. This part was pretty tough, and it took us a few days to prepare.
When we placed our items outside by the main road, I tried to make them look tidy and appealing because people come to scavenge for garbage. As soon as we left items that someone could still use, they were quickly picked up. Someone took our garden benches, shed net doors, some chairs, tables, containers, and more.
I appreciate this recycling and reusing community system. Everyone takes what they need, and the garbage truck doesn't have to pick up everything. It's become a ritual in our area during spring and autumn.
We put out double the amount of garbage this time, and people took about half of it. Fortunately, the garbage truck collected the rest for us, so we were relieved that we didn't have to burn the wood ourselves if any was left.
In Japan, I remember that people used to take big garbage if it was still useful, but not anymore. Now, people need to buy garbage tickets to dispose of waste. It's no longer allowed to pick up someone else's large garbage in Japan.
I recall my father once finding a very cool antique chest, likely from the Taisho era (1912-1926). I inherited that remarkable chest and used it for a long time. It was a modern and stylish piece of furniture in the Western style of houses. Back then, picking up someone's large garbage wasn't illegal like it is now.
Japan is also facing 'Akiya' (abandoned or vacant houses) issues similar to here. Sometimes, there are cool antique items sitting in Akiya.
Anyway, I feel much lighter now. I'll have to prepare more wooden garbage for the next autumn garbage day, but this time's cleanup was the biggest ever, I guess.

春の粗大ゴミ回収の日
私の住む地域では春と秋に市営の粗大ゴミ回収週間があります。家具、大型家電、ガラクタなどを捨てる絶好の機会です。このところ、この大型ゴミの日に向けて処分するのが難しいものも合わせて捨て活をしている最中でした。
家の前の持ち主の方はDIYをするのが好きだったようで、家の中と外にあらゆる創作品がありました。賃貸の時は片付けるわけにはいきませんでしたが、購入してからは残っているものを捨てる作業を始めました。
前の持ち主の方たちが残していったものはかなり多くて処分するのに時間がかかっています。特に木製のDIY品の処分は大変です。まずは、取り外して壊して、釘や金属部分を外して、ゴミ回収の方が安全に持ち運びやすいように準備しなければなりません。この作業がかなり労力を必要としますので、数日間かかりました。
大通りに面した道路脇の敷地内に処分するものをきれいに置いておきます。なぜきれいに置くかというと、粗大ゴミハンターがやってくるからです。私たちには必要のないものでもまだ使用可能なものを道路脇に出すや否や、誰かが拾っていってくれます。ガーデン用のベンチ、物置のネットドア、椅子、テーブル、容器などがあっという間になくなりました。
私は地域の皆さんがまだ使える物を再利用してくれることをありがたいと思います。誰かが必要なものを引き取ってくれることで、大型ゴミを回収する作業員の方もすべてを回収する必要がありません。この辺りでは粗大ゴミハントが春と秋の習慣です。
この写真に写っている倍の量のゴミを処分したのですが、トラックの回収が来る頃にはすでに半分以下の量に減っていました。幸いなことに全て残さずに回収していただけたので安心しました。これで残った物を自分たちで燃やして処理したりする作業がなくなったのでホッとしています。
昔は、日本でもまだ再利用できるものをお互いに拾い合っていたのを思い出します。今は粗大ゴミを捨てるためのチケットを購入しなければなりませんので、お互いが捨てた粗大ゴミを拾い合うことはできなくなりました。
昔、私の父がおそらく大正時代の素敵なアンティークのチェストを見つけてきたことがありました。私はそのチェストをかなり気に入ったので随分と長い間使いました。西洋風の家の中で使う大正時代のアンティークのモダンな和風家具は格好よかったです。その頃は粗大ゴミを拾ってきて再利用するのは禁止ではありませんでした。
日本は空き家問題がありますが、この地域も同じく空き家問題があります。空き家の中には思わぬお宝のアンティークが転がっているなんてこともあるのではないでしょうか。
それにしても、かなり気分が軽くなりました。また秋の粗大ゴミに向けて処分する準備をしなければならない木製のDIYゴミがありますが、今回はこれまでで一番たくさんの粗大ゴミを処分したと思います。
