Hey friends, how are you? One of the hardest things about being in another country was literally getting the leaves and some ingredients to make hallacas, and this dish is typical of our Christmas dinners so being here with my family we had to prepare them if or if.
For this we had to go to a small farm to buy banana leaves, the first thing was to explain to the owners how we needed them and the second was to move them home and then cook the leaves ourselves.
Hey que tal amigos? Como están?, una de las cosas mas difíciles de estar en otro país fue literalmente conseguir las hojas y algunos ingredientes para hacer hallacas, y es que este plato es típico de nuestras cenas navideñas por eso al estar aquí con mi familia teníamos que prepararlas si o si.
Para ello tuvimos que ir a una pequeña finca a comprar hojas de plátano, lo primero fue explicarles a los dueños como las necesitábamos y lo segundo fue trasladarlas a casa para luego cocinar las hojas nosotros mismo.
First we went to the outskirts of the city, to go to the farm where we would buy the leaves, honestly I did not believe this was possible until we arrived at the site. My cousin was in charge of negotiating and talking with the owners and then they themselves let us cut the leaves we needed.
Then the odyssey was to move them, since we had to climb a hillside with a very steep slope, and from there by motorcycle we were going to move them to the house, a task a little long but we did it.
Primeros nos fuimos a las afueras de la ciudad, para ir a la finca donde compraríamos las hojas, sinceramente yo no creí esto posible hasta que llegamos al sitio. Mi primo fue el encargado de negociar y hablar con los dueños y después ellos mismos nos dejaron cortar las hojas que necesitábamos.
Luego la odisea fue trasladarlas, ya que teníamos que subir una ladera con una pendiente muy fuerte, y desde allí en moto íbamos a trasladarlas hasta la casa, una tarea un poco larga pero si lo logramos.
Once at home my cousin prepared the leaves, cooked them and cut them, I was in another place buying olives, raisins and capers, ingredients used in the hallacas, it was difficult to find them because they had run out in the super market I went to and I had to go to another one where they had these imported products. The most difficult thing was to find the thread to tie them, there was nothing similar, it was either very thin or very thick and expensive, so we ended up buying something similar to yarn but more rigid.
Ya en la casa mi primo preparo las hojas, las cocino y corto, yo estaba en otro lugar comprando aceitunas, pasas y alcaparras, ingredientes que llevan las hallacas, se me hizo complicado encontrarlos por que se habían acabado en el súper mercado al que fui y tuve que ir a otro donde habían estos productos importados. Lo mas difícil fue encontrar el hilo para amarrarlas, no había nada similar, o era muy fino o muy grueso y costoso, así que terminamos comprando algo similar al estambre pero mas rígido.
When I arrived with the ingredients they already had the rest prepared and were ready to start preparing the tables, the goal was 50 hallacas.
Cuando llegue con los ingredientes ya tenían el resto preparado y estaban alistado las mesas para poder comenzar a preparar, la meta eran 50 hallacas.
Between my aunt and my cousin made the hallacas and my task was to tie them, so the time passed relatively quickly. Obviously when the first one was ready we had to take the picture even though they were not cooked yet. More than 1h passed and we already had 64 hallacas, they began to cook and some of them opened in the water because the thread was too thin. The rest went relatively well.
Entre mi tía y mi prima hicieron las hallacas y mi tarea era amarrarlas, así que el tiempo paso relativamente rápido por eso. Obvio al estar lista la primera había que tomar la foto aunque todavía no estaban cocinadas. Paso mas de 1h y ya teníamos 64 hallacas, comenzaron a cocinarlas y algunas se abrieron en el agua debido a que el hilo era muy fino. Del resto todo salio relativamente bien.
Between laughter and work, we ended up toasting because we managed to do what we set out to do, it was great that afternoon with the family, the funniest thing is that we have a freezer full of hallacas which will probably last until January.
Entre risas y trabajo, terminamos brindando por que logramos hacer lo que nos propusimos, si que fue genial esa tarde en familia, lo mas chistoso es que tenemos en congelador lleno de hallacas las cuales probablemente duren hasta Enero.
By the way I introduce you to Kevin, he is 22 years old and has down syndrome but this parcero is super smart, literally every time he makes us laugh and he is always at my cousins restaurant. He hates me because once I made a joke with a soda but whenever he sees me he always bothers me with whatever he can hahaha, he also accompanied us to eat when the hallacas were ready.
Por cierto les presento al Kevin, tiene 22 años y tiene sindrome de down pero este parcero es super inteligente, literalmente cada vez nos hace reír y siempre esta en el restaurante de mis primos. Me odia por que una vez le hice una broma con una gaseosa pero siempre que me ve me molesta con lo que puede jajaja, también nos acompaño a comer cuando las hallacas estuvieron listas.
After this work we went home, got ready to go to work and the same routine, and at the end we went to the park to ride in the "gusano" literally a carriage with wagons in the shape of a worm that takes us around town. And from there to take some pictures of the lighting.
Terminada esta labor nos fuimos a casa, nos alistamos para ir al trabajo y la misma rutina, y al finalizar nos fuimos al parque a pasear en el "gusano" literal un carro con vagones en forma de gusano que nos pasea por todo el pueblo. Y de allí a tomar algunas fotos del alumbrado.
Undoubtedly an incredible day, to get out of the routine and enjoy a little, I think you have to change the routine so that things flow better and with more joy.
Sin duda alguna un día increíble, para salir de la rutina y disfrutar un poco, creo que hay que cambiar de rutina para que las cosas fluyan mejor y con mas alegría.
