De Garre beer from Bruges and answers to my January HPUD Guessing Contest

in BEERlast year

A while ago we went to Bruges in Belgium with my family. Bruges is famous for, amongst many other things - beer.

While most of us went sightseeing, hubby and my brother in law, ie his whiskey drinking buddy went to explore some of Bruges famous drink. They wanted to find a good pub that offered a wide range of good local beers rather than a distillery that restricts you to their own product. We were in town for a few hours only and most places didn't open till late afternoon. Luckily they found an old pub in the middle of the city center, just behind the famous Belfort, called De Garre https://degarre.be/. Given its location, they were worried that it might be a bit touristy. Google described it as a "quaint, quirky pub with many local beers" and the reviews were good. They decided to go anyway, and boy, were they a couple of happy lads afterwards.

I asked hubby to take some photos of the pub for me in case I was going to write about it, and this is all he got me. Bloody hopeless!!! He said the De Garre is located in an old quirky building and it was difficult to take photos.

The guys had three different beers and both agreed the one brewed by De Garre was by far one of the best beer they'd ever drunk.

It was so good that they bought half a dozen back to share between them. They would have bought more if they could lug it all the way back to UK!!!

The de garre is a tripel at 11%, I'm told that's pretty high for a beer. Even from inside the bottle, you can see it's got a nice golden colour.

The most unusual thing about the beer it's big head (is that how you describe it?). It practically oozed out when we opened the bottle, and the bubbles kept on popping but didn't splash all over the place like a bottle of champagne.

I had a sip of the beer, and I can understand why the guys liked it so much. It was really nice!!! I can't describe the taste, in fact I can't really remember it now as I only had one small sip, but my first impression was very good. Hubby only had three bottles, so I thought I'd let him savour it instead. But trust me, it was very nice, definitely something that I would order in the pub.!!!

The packaging is really stylish, and modern, gold on black. I think the logo looks like a monastery, perhaps it's a nod to the origins of Belgian beer, but with a modern twist. If we ever go back to Bruges again, I have a feeling hubby will want to drop by again.

January HPUD Guessing Contest - How many times?

This month I prepared some stats on people who has entered by HPUD Guessing contest since it started. The contest was to guess, out of the 106 entries (up till Dec 2022) for the Top 5 people who had entered, how many times have they won? The answer is 3️⃣9️⃣

image.png

I'm also going to show you who the Top 30 entrants are, how many times they've entered and won. Why Top 30? Because it stops at @hoosie who is the sole winner of this month's HPUD Guessing Contest and will win 20 HBD!!! Congrats @hoosie and thank you to everyone who entered this month, even though I worded the challenge in quite a complicated way. @hoosie, you powered up on HPUD day but unfortunately it was below the 20 HP power up in the contest rules so no bonus is due. The 20 HBD will be with you very soon

I look forward to everyone joining again in February.

Awww so close hehehe 🤭
Congratulations @hoosie 🎉

Looks like a nice location to try some beers 🍻 @livinguktaiwan
In the Netherlands (working behind the bar) we needed to try and foam as much as possible the beer. Rule was at least 2 fingers sideways thick in the top of a glass.
Other countries don’t do that. Very interesting…

I believe in UK there are guidelines as well, something like there must be 95% liquid, your hubby should know 😉

And yes, you were so close, just 1 off!

Have a great weekend!

He hasn’t lived in the UK for 16 years… but think it is something like that.
Indeed… !LOL

Thanks a lot enjoy yours too 👋🏻😊

My average is pretty good overall at just over 50% correct guess rate. Not this time though - drats.

Beer sounds good. I've never had it but there are so many Belgian beers that it's not surprising.

Your stats are great, and thanks so much for your support all along, I really appreciate it leaky.

Same back at you 😁

Wow! Congratulations to hoosie and happy guessing to all the entrants. Have a nice day to one and all and take care.

You have a great weekend as well @pinkchic

Congrats to the winner it wasn't an easy contest at all.

I think I made this a bit more complicated than it needed!

Yeah it was.

One of my favorite drinks is beer, especially when I am with my friends. I could turn down whiskey, but not the beer. And by just seeing how de garre looked like, I can feel the refreshment! Gosh, it looks satisfying to drink.

I'm not much of a drinker, but I really enjoyed the de garre. Whisky I really cannot stand, it's way too sharp for me.

Wow, I didn't know I "win" in number of entries. 😎

Yup!! Thanks so much for your support Ace!!!

You're welcome.

Looks fabulous! I'm actually going to Bruges in the very near future - but I'm not drinking alcohol right now. But maybe there will be some alcohol free beers I can try.

Or hot chocolate. They were made with chocolate drops rather than powder, really nice. My sister bought quite a lot back.

Oh yes I'll definitely try some hot chocolate. That's totally allowed!

Congratulations @hoosie enjoy the rewards bud!!

Until the next one😎😎

Yup, see you in the Feb HPUD Guessing Contest!

Oh wow. Many thanks indeed, that was rather lucky !
And I love the pic from inside the pub - hilarious !!! Great place for beer though !

They had some great raspberry beers I found, but in general they were too much like lager for my taste!
I am sure the pair of them had fun though.

tbh, I couldn't tell the difference between a beer, lager, ale or whatever. Not sure about the fruit beers, they always taste a bit odd, especially the berry ones, reminds me of cough syrup 😄

hehe I like a dark beer so the vast majority taste like odd stuff to me 🤣

Belgian beer ! yummy, though at 11%, just the one barman please!

Belgian beers are really nice aren't they?

yes very nice!!

Wow! Congrats @hoosie. You really got it right.

Hope to see you again next month!

Hopefully I can..

Tied for 2nd all time wins is not so bad. Looking forward to next month and see if I can improve my record 🤞

Looks like a really good beer. Unfortunately, I stay away from anything with alcohol nowadays. My body can't seem to handle it well 😔

Hi, you've made me really want some beer. I'm considering the idea of doing a tour here in Havana and when I'm really drunk then I'll write the post. Good idea, right? I was just now here half wiped out with the yuck connection we have and trying to go through some posts, curate them and comment on them and I saw a notification that I have a new follower. Me very happy. Grateful, most of all.
Oh, and I didn't know about the contest. I'm going to do some good research so I can participate in February.
Nice and fruitful day, I wish you from a warm land that these days has been cooling down a bit. It's a little windy there. I'm sure it's still extremely hot for you.

Congratulations to @hoosie. Was it a wild guess or you did some calculation to reach this answer?

That looks so delicious

A !BEER from me and let me know when you are around the next time.
Maybe to the next #HiveMeetupAachen??
