Anyone who has ever gone to visit La Comuna 13 in Medellin (Colombia) for the first time, walks out of there with lots of excitement and eager to talk about the unique experience that this visit has offered to them.

I can already count myself among these lucky ones, although it has been a little difficult for me to start talking about this adventure, due to all the things this place has to show. That's why I have decided to start in the most relaxing and refreshing way I could have chosen, talking about beers. And not just any kind of beers, you'll see.

To be honest I didn't expect such a wide selection of beers available in this walk, and I'm only going to refer to the area of the commercial boulevard that is located at the top of the quarter, but during the whole tour inside La Comuna 13 there are countless places where you can go to taste local beers.

From the point where my improvised and brief beer tasting is located, because I did not consider that this was going to be part of my visit, there is an interesting walkway that winds along the mountain, full of artisans, artists and stores that offer very diverse entertainment, so you can have the best experience enjoying the views of the commune in all its magnitude, something that is impressive and moving at the same time.

But let's get to the main thing in this entry, beers.

Cualquier persona que se adventure a visitar la Comuna 13 en Medellin (Colombia) por primera vez, sale de allí con muchísimo entusiasmo y ganas de hablar sobre la singular experiencia que le ha ofrecido esta visita.

Yo ya puedo contarme entre estos afortunados, aunque me ha costado un poco comenzar a hablar de esta aventura, debido a toda la cantidad de cosas que este lugar tiene para ofrecer. Es por ello que he decidido comenzar de la forma mas relajante y refrescante que podía haber elegido, hablando de cervezas. Y no de cualquier tipo de cervezas, ya verás.

Siendo sincera no me esperaba tal oferta de cervezas disponibles en este paseo, y eso que voy a referirme tan solo a la zona del boulevard comercial que se encuentra en lo más alto del barrio, pero durante todo el recorrido dentro de La Comuna 13 hay innumerables locales en los que puedes entrar a degustar cerveza local.

Desde el punto en donde se ubica mi improvisada y breve cata de cervezas, pues no consideraba que esto iba a ser parte de mi visita, hay una interesante caminería que serpentea pegada a la montaña, llena de artesanos, artistas y comercios que ofrecen entretenimiento muy diverso, para que tengas la mejor experiencia disfrutando de las vistas hacia la comuna en toda su magnitud, algo que resulta impresionante y estremecedor al mismo tiempo.

Pero vamos a lo importante en esta entrada, a las cervezas.

Being up there after noon, which certainly means it's hot in the tropics, and proudly wearing my #WorldMapPin sweater, made me feel thirsty much faster than I expected, so my attention was immediately drawn to all the beers I saw around me, along with the signs advertising the most refreshing beverages everywhere.

With so many beverages on display, it didn't take me long to realize that there was a huge offer of craft beers, many of them locally brewed. If I did not expect the amount of beers I would find, much less did I expect to see such an interesting craft proposal, so it was a little difficult to decide what to try with the little time I had.

Luckily it wasn't my first time visiting the country and on other occasions I had tried the most popular industrial beers, so I didn't run the risk of wasting this chance by trying something more common due to lack of knowledge. I skipped without hesitation the places that offered brands such as Aguila, Club Colombia and Pokerbecause I knew that in the following days, I would go to places where these would be the only choice.

I guess it was the right thing to do because I came across a very strange scene later on in the tour. Going on my own, without much time or a tour guide, I couldn't find out if the skeleton sitting there was a decoration for some particular purpose or just a joke. It wasn't Halloween so that wasn't the reason.

The curious thing about that skeleton was that it had next to it a can of Poker beer, a commercial brand widely consumed in the country, of course, this beer belonged to a person who was drinking it quietly sitting very close to the creepy decoration, and left it next to him while he was talking effusively with his friends. I considered the image of the can next to the skeleton as a souvenir of this visit very amusing and I was quick to capture the moment. Drinking commercial beers leads to that guys, better to go in search of craft ones haha.

Estar allá arriba después del mediodía, algo que sin duda significa calor en el trópico, y vistiendo orgullosamente mi suéter de #WorldMapPin, hizo que me sintiera sedienta mucho más rápido de lo que esperaba, así que fue de inmediato la atención que robaron de mi todas las cervezas que veía al alrededor, junto a los carteles que anunciaban tener, por doquier, las bebidas mas refrescantes.

Con tanta bebida expuesta, no me costó darme cuenta que había una enorme oferta de cervezas artesanales y, muchas de ellas, de elaboración local. Si no me esperaba la cantidad de cervezas que me encontraría, mucho menos esperaba ver una propuesta artesanal tan interesante, por eso me costó un poco decidir qué probar con el poco tiempo del que disponía.

Por suerte no era mi primera vez visitando el país y en otras ocasiones había probado las cervezas industriales más populares, por lo que no corría el riesgo de desperdiciar esa oportunidad probando algo mas corriente debido al desconocimiento. Me salté sin dudar los lugares en que ofrecían marcas como Aguila, Club Colombia y Poker*, porque ,además, sabía que en los días siguientes iría a lugares en los que estas serían la única opción.

Creo que fue lo más acertado definitivamente, porque luego me encontré con una escena muy extraña en el recorrido. Al ir por mi cuenta, sin mucho tiempo ni guía turístico, no pude enterarme si el esqueleto que estaba allí sentado era una decoración con algún propósito particular o solo una broma. No estábamos en Halloween así que ese no era el motivo.

Lo curioso de ese esqueleto es que tenía a su lado una lata de cerveza Poker, una marca comercial muy consumida en el país, por supuesto, esta cerveza era de una persona que estaba tomándola tranquilamente sentado muy cerca del escalofriante adorno, y la dejaba al lado de este mientras hablaba efusivamente con sus acompañantes. Me pareció muy divertida la imagen de la lata junto al esqueleto como recuerdo de esta visita y no tarde en capturar el momento. Beber cervezas comerciales nos lleva a eso chicos, mejor ir en búsqueda de las artesanales jaja.

There were many places offering a particular brand of craft beers and others with a fun mix of craft, commercial and spirit cocktails, in which the popular Michelada always predominated. This last one had been highly recommended to me to try it, but I didn't think it was the right time to drink a mixture of things that would hide the taste of the beer, I continued with my intention to look for an interesting local option.

Finally I decided to stop for a while in a place with very few pretensions, in which there were also a couple of very friendly employees, these girls showed me and quickly recommended to me the beers that could interest me the most according to what I told them.

La estación is a kiosk that sells alcoholic beverages conveniently located next to the escalators that take you to the top of la comuna 13, it is not difficult to locate even though it is very similar to many other businesses in the area, but it has a nice graffiti under its bar, with the look of a woman that attracts a lot of attention. They offer a great variety of drinks and as for craft beers, they have several brands, it wasn't the store with the widest offer, but it was the right one to be able to decide without much difficulty.

I can't fail to mention that another thing that caught my attention in this place, was the advertising of the WEED13 Beer, it was impossible not to be curious about a marijuana beer that was so easily marketed, later I was even more surprised to see that almost all the locals marketed and advertised at least one brand of beer based on marijuana, but I'll talk about it a bit later.

Había muchos lugares ofreciendo alguna marca de cervezas artesanales en concreto y otros con una divertida mezcla de artesanales, comerciales y cocteles espirituosos, en los que predominaba siempre la popular Michelada. Esta ultima me habían recomendado mucho probarla, pero no me pareció el momento adecuado para beberme una mezcla de cosas que ocultaran el sabor de la cerveza, seguí con mi intención de buscar una propuesta local interesante.

Finalmente decidía detenerme un rato en un local con muy pocas pretensiones, en las que había además un par de dependientas muy amables, estas chicas me mostraron y recomendaron rápidamente las cervezas que mas podrían interesarme según lo que les había comentado.

La estación es un kiosko de expendio de bebidas alcohólicas que se encuentra convenientemente al lado de las escaleras mecánicas que te llevan hasta lo más alto de la comuna 13, no es difícil de localizar a pesar de que es muy parecido a muchos otros negocios de la zona, pero tiene un bonito graffiti bajo su barra, con la mirada de una mujer que llama mucho la atención. Ofrecen gran variedad de bebidas y en cuanto a las cervezas artesanales, disponen de varias marcas, no era la tienda con la oferta más amplia, pero si la correcta para poder decidir sin mucha dificultad.

No puedo dejar de mencionar que otra cosa que me llamó la atención de este lugar, fue la publicidad de la Cerveza WEED13, era imposible no sentir curiosidad por una cerveza de marihuana que se comercializara tan fácilmente, mas tarde me sorprendí aun mas al ver que prácticamente todos los locales comercializaban y anunciaban aunque sea una marca de cerveza a base de Marihuana, pero hablaré de ello un poco más adelante.

This place had 6 brands of craft beers, in addition to the Weed 13, there were the Samsara, The Dragon, Kashmir, Bruder and a very remarkable one called Russian Cocaine which, despite checking that it did not contain any psychoactive substance, I decided not to try because it contains 10% ABV, and I had not yet eaten a single meal.

After a quick scan I decided to order two, out of the four options they had available from the Bruder brand, although I was left wanting to try the rest. In addition to the ones I ended up choosing, there was the IPA 65 and a Coffee one that surely had to be a beer dream hahaha, I had a hard time not going back to order it xD.

I thought I'd pick the ones that would possibly be the lightest, most fun and refreshing among all, so I could satisfy the thirst I had. Although I didn't try the other brands to make an accurate comparison, I didn't make a mistake in the choice according to what I felt like at that moment.

Este local disponía de 6 marcas de cervezas artesanales, además de la Weed 13, estaban las Samsara, Las Dragón, Kashmir, Bruder y una muy llamativa que se llama Cocaína Rusa que, a pesar de comprobar que no contenía ninguna sustancia psicotópica, decidí no probar porque contiene 10 grados de alcohol y yo aún no había comido nada.

Tras un rápido repaso me decidí a pedir dos, de las cuatro opciones que tenían disponibles de la marca Bruder, aunque me quedé con ganas de probar el resto. Además de las que terminé eligiendo, estaban la IPA 65 y una de Café que seguramente tenía que ser un sueño de cerveza jajaja, me costó bastante no devolverme a pedirla xD.

Pensé en elegir las que posiblemente serían las más ligeras, divertidas y refrescantes entre todas, para poder saciar la sed que tenía. Aunque no probé las otras marcas para hacer una comparación acertada, no me equivoqué en la elección según lo que me apetecía en ese momento.

Lulo - Summer Ale 5% (Bruder)

This beer was the first one I chose straight away, I thought it was great to get something as Colombian as lulo, a citrus fruit widely consumed as juice, in a beer. This had to be fun.

Despite having 5% ABV, it felt quite smooth, probably because of the combination with the fruit's acidity, but it was exactly what I needed in that heated moment. In addition to the balanced acidity, the beer had a nice light sweetness to it. I finished it fairly quickly and found it to be a very suitable choice for when the temperatures rise much higher.

Esta cerveza fue la primera que elegí sin dudarlo, me pareció genial conseguir en una cerveza algo tan colombiano como el lulo, una fruta cítrica muy consumida en forma de zumo. Esto tenía que ser divertido.

A pesar de contar con 5 % en volumen de alcohol, la sentí bastante suave, es probable que sea por la combinación con la acidez de la fruta, pero era exactamente lo que necesitaba en ese acalorado momento. Además de la equilibrada acidez, la cerveza tenía un ligero y agradable dulzor. Me la terminé bastante rápido y me pareció una opción muy adecuada para cuando suban mucho más las temperaturas.

Mango & Granadilla - Pale Ale 5% (Bruder)

As I liked the first one quite a lot, I continued with the same brand and the tropical fruit trend, in this case a mango and grenadilla mix that promised to be even sweeter than the previous one. Even though it's not the style I usually prefer, I was in curious mode and wanted to try this combination.

Interestingly it turned out to be a bit more bitter and “stronger” than the previous one, at least it felt less light in comparison. It was nice because it was also very cold, but it turned out to be different than I expected. Fruit-wise, I found it to be a bit more predominantly mango flavored, if slightly so.

Como la primera me gustó bastante, seguí con la misma marca y la tendencia de frutas tropicales, en este caso una mezcla de mango y granadilla que prometía ser aún más dulce que la anterior. A pesar de que no es el estilo que suelo preferir, estaba en modo curioso y quise probar esta combinación.
Curiosamente resultó ser un poco más amarga y “fuerte” que la anterior, al menos se sentía menos ligera en comparación. Era agradable porque además estaba muy fría, pero resultó ser diferente a lo que esperaba. En cuanto a las frutas, me pareció que predominaba un poco más el sabor a mango, aunque ligeramente.

When I finished the experience with Bruder beers was that I realized that they were not locally brewed, at least not in the city of Medellín. They are a Colombian craft concept but with origin from Tunja, quite far from where we are. So I decided that I should look for at least one more beer that was brewed right there so that I wouldn't leave with the feeling that I had missed the chance.

However, before continuing, the most prudent thing to do was to eat something, as the walk was about to come to an end and I still had some commitments to attend to before I could let the alcohol go to my head.

Colombian and street food was practically every 5 meters, varied options and quite exaggerated in many cases. But as always, I will talk about it in more detail another time. What I can tell you is that the sweet options, for us with a sweet tooth, were plentiful as well.

Fried doughnuts with sugar and arequipe or the famous wafers, they were everywhere. It is impossible for me not to share a photo of a huge pot full of hot arequipe that was quickly decreasing. The product was selling non-stop.

Cuando terminé la experiencia con las cervezas Bruder fue que car en cuenta que no eran de origen local, al menos no de la ciudad de Medellín. Sí son un concepto artesanal colombiano pero con origen de Tunja, bastante alejados de donde estamos. Por ello decidí que debía buscar al menos una cerveza mas que fuese elaborada allí para no irme con la sensación de haber desaprovechado la ocasión.

Sin embargo, antes de continuar, lo más prudente debía ser comer algo, pues la caminata estaba por llegar a su fin y aun me quedaban algunos compromisos por atender como para dejar que el alcohol se me subiera a la cabeza.

Comida colombiana y callejera había prácticamente a cada 5 metros, opciones variadas y bastante exageradas en muchos casos. Pero como siempre, ya hablaré de ello con mas detalle en otra ocasión. Lo que puedo adelantar es que las opciones dulces, para nosotros los golosos, eran muchísimas también.

Rosquillas fritas con azúcar y arequipe o las famosas obleas, que estaban por doquier. Me es imposible no compartir una foto de una enorme olla llena de dulce de arequipe calentito que rápidamente iba decreciendo. El producto se vendía sin parar.

WEED13 - Belgian Golden Pale Ale 8% (The Kombi)

So, yes. I went straight to try the beer brewed with marijuana, there was no doubt that it was brewed locally, as all the signs exclaimed that they were breweries from Comuna 13 itself. There were actually several options, with similar names, but undoubtedly the most popular was WEED13, as it was the home brew.

As practically all the kiosks offered this beer, I decided to approach an improvised stand in the pedestrian area, where a funny and friendly guy was in charge of selling exclusively the WEED13, plus I liked that he had his Colombian flag in the background in the area where the coolers are in the open air.

It was a very funny situation because I approached very determined to his stand pointing to the pile of empty bottles on display, telling him “I want to try that”. Something he found very funny, so he said “Sure! the first thing you have to tell me is what is your average consumption, approximately”.

I couldn't help but laugh out loud because I didn't expect that question, which turned out to be very accurate indeed, since the only addictive thing I consume regularly is coffee. I composed myself and simply replied “none”. He looked at me quite interestedly and said “Ah, no, no! Then I can only sell to you the green one, which has only a medicinal compound.”

And that's how I tried a medicated beer hahahahaha.

Así pues, sí, me fui directamente a probar la cerveza elaborada con marihuana, ahí no cabía duda que estaba elaborada de forma local, pues todos los letreros exclamaban que eran cervecerías de la propia Comuna 13. En realidad había varias opciones, con nombres parecidos, pero sin duda la más popular era la WEED13, por ser la cerveza de casa.

Como prácticamente todos los kioskos ofrecían esta cerveza, decidí acercarme a un improvisado puesto en la zona peatonal, en donde un divertido y amable chico se encargaba de vender exclusivamente las WEED13, además me gustó que tuviese su bandera colombiana de fondo en la zona en donde tiene las neveras al ire libre.

Fue un momento muy divertido porque yo me acerqué muy decidida a su puesto señalando el montón de botellas vacías que tenia expuestas, diciéndole “yo quiero probar eso”. Algo que le pareció muy divertido, por lo que me dijo “claro que sí, lo primero que tienes que decirme es cuál es tu media de consumo, aproximadamente”.

No pude evitar reírme a carcajadas porque no me esperaba esa pregunta, que resultó ser muy acertada realmente, pues lo único adictivo que consumo con regularidad es café. Me compuse y le respondí simplemente “nulo”. Él me miró con bastante interés y me dijo “¡Ah, no, no! entonces solo puedo venderte la verde, que tiene solo componente medicinal.”

Y así fue como probé una cervecita de remedio jajajaja.

Not wanting to be left curious, I took the chance while I was drinking the beer to ask the vendor about the difference in the colors on the label of the bottles.

He told me that, although they were all made with marijuana, the difference was the component of the plant that was added to each beer, so they make three types of WEED13.

The one I was tasting was the green one, which in addition to the elements typical of a Pale Ale, contained CBD, the component of marijuana known for its medicinal applications and which gave this beer a kind of analgesic effect.

Then there were the yellow and the red, which contain different proportions of THC, which does act as a psychotropic. He told me that to be clear about the effect of each, I could consider that if I drank a yellow, I would feel like I was in the clouds and if I drank the red, I would have to go straight to the hotel to sleep because the action is quite strong. Haha, nope thanks.

Since I am not a great connoisseur in the matter, I believed everything he told me and settled for tasting my beer categorized as analgesic, green and safe. The taste surprised me a lot, because it turned out to be much more pleasant than I expected, as I imagined it would have something similar to the bitter taste of an IPA, but that bitterness turned out to be much lighter.

In a way I felt like I was drinking a flavored soda hahaha if that makes sense, with an herbaceous taste at the end that was pleasant, like a fizzy iced tea. Of course, the alcohol was very present at all times.

Como no quería quedarme con la curiosidad, aproveché mientras me tomaba la cerveza para preguntarle al vendedor la diferencia de los colores en la etiqueta de las botellas.

Me dijo que, aunque todas estabas fabricadas con marihuana, la diferencia era el componente de la planta que se agregaba a cada cerveza, por lo que elaboran tres tipos de WEED13.

La que yo estaba probando era la de color verde, que además de los elementos propios de una Pale Ale, contenía CBD, el componente de la marihuana conocido por sus aplicaciones medicinales y que le aportaba a esta cerveza una especie de efecto analgésico.

Luego estaban la amarilla y la roja, que contienen diferentes proporciones de THC, que sí actúa como psicotrópico. Me dijo que para tener claro el efecto de cada una, podría considerar que si me tomaba una amarilla, sentiría como si estuviese en las nubes y si me tomaba la roja, tendría que irme directamente al hotel a dormir porque la acción es bastante fuerte. Jaja, nope gracias.

Como yo no soy una gran conocedora en la materia, le creí a todo lo que me dijo y me conformé degustando mi cerveza catalogada como analgésico, verde y segura. El sabor me sorprendió mucho, porque resultó ser mucho más agradable de lo que esperaba, pues yo imaginaba que tendría algo parecido al sabor amargo de una IPA, pero ese amargor resultó ser muchísimo más ligero.

En cierta forma me pareció estar tomando un refresco aderezado jajaja si es que eso tiene sentido, con un sabor herbáceo al final que resultaba agradable, como un té helado gasificado. Por supuesto, el alcohol estaba muy presente en todo momento.

Must say that I had a great time tasting Colombian beers in La Comuna 13 in Medellín, I think the plan is great to repeat with a group of friends and try more of the craft beers that you can find there. It's a very common thing since the place was full of people, not only tourists, eating and drinking with the view of la comuna.

After having tasted the three beers, I decided that I would definitely repeat the Bruder of Lulo, it was the one I liked the most and that seemed to me more in line with the climate of the time. Then I looked for it on the internet, but it is an edition that tends to sell out very quickly, they brew few according to season and it is not so easy to acquire, so I think I was lucky to order it that day.

I could say that I would also repeat the WEED13 green, because I liked its flavor, but the truth is that the story didn't end with just tasting it, because the “analgesic” effect that the vendor had told me was very accurate. I remember spending that afternoon yawning a lot and not understanding why, since I had rested very well the night before and it didn't make sense that I was so sleepy. The next day looking at the pictures I realized that it had to be because of the beer with cannabis hahaha good thing I didn't dare with the other colors.

For those who don't already know, as was my own situation, and are planning to travel to the city, take this option in mind and be prepared to have a fun time with the variety of beers that you can find at the top of the viewpoint of La Comuna 13. So if you go there, don't forget to raise a toast to me hahaha.

Tengo que decir que me lo pasé bastante bien probando cervezas colombianas en La Comuna 13 de Medellín, creo que el plan es genial para repetir co nun grupo de amigos y probar más de la propuesta de cervezas artesanales que se encuentran allí. Es algo muy común pues el lugar estaba repleto de gente, no solo turistas, comiendo y bebiendo con las vistas a la comuna.

Luego de haber probados las tres cervezas, dirigidas que sin duda repetiría la Bruder de Lulo, fue la que más me gustó y que me pareció mas acorde al clima del momento. Luego la busqué en internet, pero es una edición que suele agotarse muy rápidamente, elaboran pocas según temporada y no es tan fácil adquirirla, así que me parece que tuve suerte de pedirla ese día.

Podría decir que repetiría también la WEED13 verde, porque su sabor me gustó, pero lo cierto es que la historia no terminó solo con probarla, pues el efecto “analgésico” que me había comentado el dependiente fue muy certero. Recuerdo haber pasado esa tarde bostezando muchísimo sin entender porque, siendo que había descansado muy bien la noche anterior y no tenía sentido que tuviese tanto sueño. Al día siguiente viendo las fotos fue que caí en cuenta que tuvo que haber sido por la cerveza con cannabis jajaja menos mal que no me atreví con los otros colors.

¡La comuna 13 de Medellín* es un paraíso cervecero! para el que no lo sepa, como fue mi caso, y tenga pensado viajar a la ciudad, que tenga en cuenta esta opción y se valla preparado para pasar un rato divertido con la variedad de cervezas que puede encontrar el lo alto del mirador de la comuna. Así que si vas por allí, no olvides tomarte una a mi salud jajaja.
