Sams Chowder House for #Beersaturday

in BEERlast year (edited)

It's not often my wife has a Saturday afternoon off of work, but this #beersaturday was different. Since she had the day off I asked her if she wanted to go anywhere and she wanted to go to Sam's Chowder House in Half Moon Bay, California. From our house its about a 40 minute drive to Half Moon Bay so we headed out for lunch.

Sam's Chowder House is fairly famous for great seafood and a great atmosphere. It's located on Pillar Point beach next to the small Pillar Point harbor.

Since we arrived at the time they were opening we were seated outside overlooking the beach and harbor. There is plenty of seating but the place fills very fast and on nice days the outdoor areas may be full. As we sat the fog had just about disappeared.

Since it's #Beersaturday I ordered a nice glass of Guinness, my wife a margarita, and sat back to enjoy the view while we waited for our Baked Oysters Rockfeller.

The Oysters Rockfeller never disappoints. We then ordered our lunches and again just enjoyed some great drinks.

Another Guinness for me and lunch arrived. Guinness goes so well with seafood. As usual I ordered their famous Lobster roll it usually has celery chopped in with the lobster but I'm not a fan of celery so they were as they always are happy to leave it out. This is my all time favorite sandwich and has been voted one of America's top 5 sandwiches. The lobsters are flown daily from Maine for these lobster sandwhiches. Yes, my lunch flew from the East Coast to the West Coast of the United States and is something special. My wife ordered Shrimp Scampi which is usuall a toss up for her between the Scampi or Lobster Roll.

We finished lunch and headed home to relax out in our backyard. I cracked open a great double IPA called Widowmaker, brewed by Fall RIver Brewing. Fall River Brewing is located in Redding, California and I seem to like most of their beers that I have tried. Widowmaker is 10.2% ABV which is typical for a double IPA but is very crisp which is a little surpising. I am not sure what hops are used but the description states it was brewed for a Hophead. The add many late addition hops during the boil and numerous dry hops during fermentation. The beer does have a great hop smell and is not so bitter that it makes you pucker. This beer has a great balance.

I ended my #Beersaturday with one of my all time favorite beers. Big Sky Brewing in Missoula, Montana has a brown ale that is excellent. My wife and I have visited the brewery numerous times on our visits to Montana. The Brown Ale I am talking about is Moose Drool. Moose Drool is 5%ABV and is brewed with East Kent Goldings, Willamette, and Liberty Hops. The beer has a slight coffee and a slight cocoa flavor balanced by the slight bitterness of the hops.

I hope everyone was able to enjoy #Beersaturday as much as I did.
