Mixing Scottish Heritage with Italian Beer on Beer Saturday
I had a spot of work to do in St Andrews yesterday, and managed to blend some work and pleasure!"
The golfers amongst you might know that St Andrews is the home of golf ⛳️🏌️♀️
But it also holds incredible historical and religious significance. Not only in Scotland but Europe as well...
The Fife Pilgrim Way
Photo from me...
For 400 years, St Andrews was one of the main pilgrimage destinations in Medieval Europe. Rich and poor flocked to be near the bones of St Andrew, one of Jesus’ disciples. This was considered to be the next best thing to being in the Holy Land and walking in the footsteps of Jesus himself. Therefore, St Andrews joined ranks in terms of importance with the popular disciple destinations of Rome (St Peter) and Santiago de Compostela (St James the Great).
Here we have the ruins of St Andrews Cathedral which was the goto place for these pilgrims.
As you can see we had meh weather, being winter it in Scotland it is hit and miss. So after a wee wander around our Scottish heritage it was time to get some Italian cuisine and beer!
The observant in the audience will notice an item that gives the food away ...
🤣
Did you see the cookie cutter?
And there wer have it.
It was the only beer they sold. We were in a Neapolitan pizza restaurant.
So of course I had to have an Italian beer!
Birrificio Angelo Poretti
I am not a big lager drinker and to be honest not much of an Italian fan ... you can keep your Prosecco thank you very much.
It was a frothy pint and that is what they recommend to have a good white head.
The food wow...
Incredible pizza with beer
I had a number 13 and fluff me the Poretti beer was so drinkable.
It really went well with the pizza which by the way was the best I had ever had.
I am not a pizza fan at all so this was a compliment!
The artichoke was awesome. Poretti has a refreshing bitterness and a sweet malty body and paired so well with artichokes and black olives in my pizza!

We are Birrificio Angelo Poretti and ours is a story of curiosity and discovery. We were born in Italy in 1877 from the curious mind of our founder, Angelo Poretti.
The big thing is they made the beer to be drunk at the table with food.
And I can agree with that, it really went well with that flavoursome pizza.
With its sparkling effervescence, full bodied sweetness and distinct hoppy bitterness that helps ignite your appetite, it has a natural affinity with a wide range of foods Birrificio Angelo Poretti is versatile enough to enhance a simple bowl of olives, a light lunch or a gastronomic dinner.
It really went well with those black olives. I loved the fizz and bitterness to be honest.

a perfect mix for a great day
It really was a perfect day topped off with a surprisingly good beer!
I have never seen a picture that I wanted to eat, that pizza looks so good.
I wish buildings were still made like they were made in the days back then, can you imagine placing the rocks in that archway and getting them to stay like that? wow, I would love to see it in person.
The pizza was out of this world. Mrs T who is from Colorado and does not rate pizzas in the UK at all loved it.
Yeah there are buildings and buildings. The walls are six feet thick. To think these are all made over 500 years ago without the machines and technology that we have today, I really get amazed every time I look at old buildings here.
I also feel amazed looking at old buildings, when I went to NYC all I wanted to do was see the old buildings, especially the Churches.
In Fl we have some old forts but nothing like this.
Thank you for the pictures, when you can not be there and see for yourself they are the next best thing.
You're really not a big beer drinker? I thought you were on my team. Anyway, I'll cry because you're not one of mine. Pizza and beer is a better pairing. Nobody could have such a perfect relationship as pizza and beers. A big hug
jeje you have misunderstood Nancy, I like beer, I just prefer dark beer! A big hug so yes pizza and beer!
I was expecting a burger to be paired with beer🙂↕️😌. But looking at that pizza, . Ok forget about the burger first😬😁.
Hehe do you know I had only coffee with the burger!
For breakfast?
hehe for dinner 🍔☕
😌😌
I have to admit that my favourite beer to drink with pizza and jacket potatoes is Peroni!
Nice choice but I preferred this Poretti.
Pizza and Beer? Really? Does it taste good?
It tastes really good!
I can't wait to try that one. I love pizza and beer too! Our body needs beer to fight the bad bacteria.
