The Story Behind the Abandoned House

What’s up Hive! How are you? I hope you are doing well. I would like to share to you a story about our previous home in the mountain.

Once upon a time, there was a happy couple named Eleo and Ane who live a simple life on the top of the mountain. They have nine children. They have six boys and three girls.

They are just ordinary individuals in the community. Ane is a loving mother, a supportive wife, a vegetable vendor, and a farmer, while Eleo is a responsible father, a good husband, a farmer, and a fisherman. They never have been in the city.

They start from scratched and build their dream house from their tears and sweat of working on the farm. Everything is doing great for years until…

One day, while they are busy working on the farm, their small children is playing in front of the house. In unexpected circumstance, that Tuesday afternoon, at exactly three o’clock, there was a small puppy with a black fur that suddenly appears in the yard and directly bites their son named Vicente.

Nobody in the neighborhood knows the owner of the juvenile dog. After biting the child, the dog just run fast going to the woods.

The hospital is located in the city and people in the remote area on that time do not know that when a person was bitten by animals, anti-rabies vaccine should be injected. The only thing they knew is the traditional medicine, the use of herbal or the home remedy, and going to the quack doctor for cure.

They bring the child to the quack doctor for help. Sadly, the child died after one week. We always heard from the parents who experienced losing a child this phrase…

“It is so painful to bury your own child”.

That is the kind of pain that they felt during that period. Time might reshape their deformed hearts, but it will never be the same shape and size as before.

As years passed by, another incident happened to their daughter named Lydia. She is in her third year high school when she was hit and run by a dumb truck while going home from school. Her dreams in life vanish in just one click. The whole family is in deep sorrow and sadness. Their world collapse and broken into pieces.

After the death of their beloved daughter, Ane discovered that she is pregnant. It is a surprise because she is already forty two years old and she is almost in her menopausal period. The new member is a baby girl, the youngest. Her arrival lights up the gloomy world of the family. They think that it is the end of their sadness.

All of a sudden, something happen. The head of the family got sick. It is something serious that a quack doctor cannot heal. They went to the city for the first time and he is admitted to the hospital. Eleo is in a very bad shape and the family needs a huge amount of money for the hospitalization. The couple decided to rush sell some portion of their land in a lesser price and sell the cows, the pigs, and some of the goats and native chickens in order to have money for the medicine and other medical expenses.

He is in and out from the hospital for two years, until his body give up! He passed away. He feel that he will not live longer that is why he decided to go home from the hospital and spent his remaining time with his family.

After the death, Ane raised her young children alone by working on the farm, selling vegetables on the market, cooking banana cue, and making rice cake.

Life before Eleo died

He always makes sure that there are always foods on the table, everybody is safe, able to provide the needs of the family and his children go to school. He is just an ordinary citizen, a farmer and a fisherman. After working on the farm, he does fishing on the ocean. He do not have much money in his pocket, however they do not buy their food during that time because everything is on their yard already. His catch from fishing is only for family’s consumption.

The eldest and the second child got married and have their own family. The other daughter, Ana is still studying in college. She is a working student. She works as a factory worker during her free time to support her study. She really pursued her study even with limited resources because she wants to help her parents in raising the younger siblings.

Things changed after the head of the family got sick and passed away.

After the Death of Eleo

The daughter sacrificed her dream of graduating college and becoming a secondary teacher. She stops schooling and tried her luck in other country, in Taiwan, as a factory worker and work like a Carabao for years just to pay the entire loan from the hospitalization of his deceased father.

Her other brother Edelberto is not financially stable. So, He also received a motorcycle from her sister Ana as a help, in order for him to have a source of income.

Sadly, something happened. He was shot and killed by his best friend just because of that motorcycle. His best friend William uses the motorcycle without asking permission from him and it was damaged. They have an argument that lead to killing Edelberto.

William and his eldest brother Angelito shot him four times and hit him many times on the head using a stone until his skull was broken. They brutally killed him.

The court sentenced them for eighteen years imprisonment for murder. All the expenses for the funeral are shouldered by Anna as well as the expenses of the entire criminal case against the murderers.

If she can only backward the time, she would not buy that motorcycle. The suspects were done serving their sentenced now, but it doesn’t mean that the family forgets what happened.

The best friend, one of the murderers cried and asks for forgiveness to the whole family and to Edelberto’s young children, but his eldest brother Angelito, the other suspect was so proud of what he did. Only his guilt will judge and let him repent someday.

There are so much death and heartache in the old house. So, the family decided to move to other place and start a new life.

The relics of the house is the eyewitness of the happiness and sadness of the family. They might move on and start a new life; however, all the pain and memories already marked their hearts forever…

Time, forgiveness, and prayer healed their broken hearts.
