HERMIT CRABS: THE UNTOLD STORY OF WISDOM, RESOURCEFULNESS AND RESILIENCE

It's really fun to observe even the ordinary organisms around us. If we take a closer look at them and meditate about them, we can learn a lot from them. Sometimes they help us to develop certain qualities.

Fellow Hivers, let's talk about a type of organism and explore what qualities we can learn. Let's talk about the Hermit Crabs. I will share with you what I witnessed with my wife when we lived in Malapascua Island a few years ago. I just contributed this story but this is based on the images we collected in 2016. While I looked at the different unique pictures of these hermit crabs I was able to reflect and learn three virtues: wisdom, resourcefulness, and resilience. How?

Wisdom

Hermit crabs belong to the crustacean family. To survive in the changing climate hermit crabs will use empty snail shells. Unlike other crustaceans that have their own protective shell that grows along with the growth of the body, it does not have its own shell. While the hermit crab is growing, its shell remains the same size, so the time will come when it will be tight for its shell. But hermit crabs are very wise. Before the time comes when its body is tight in the shell, it will look for a looser one. When the looser one is available that's the time for it to take off the old shell and transfer to the new one. People can learn from it. Are there circumstances in which a person quits or resigns from work even though he has not found a replacement job or livelihood? If there is, we can learn from the wisdom of hermit crabs to be successful in taking care of our family.

Resourcefulness

Hermit crabs that live on dry land have limited options for natural shells but they are masters in finding alternatives. We've got two pictures of hermit crabs with their unique alternatives. One used an antiperspirant deodorant lid and the second used a jar because of the great size of its body. Lesson we learned, when there is a change in our circumstances that is different from the usual, are we ready to adapt to what is readily available to survive? Hopefully, we learn how resourceful are the hermit crabs.

Resilience

Hermit crabs can live in the sea and on dry land. The sea is abundant in food while the dry land is scarce. But still, they are willing to adapt to a different environment even if it is difficult to do so at first. What can we learn from them? For example, we are used to living in the city, naturally, we are also used to a comfortable life. However, if there is a need to move to a province where transportation may be difficult and food may be scarce, so it requires a lot of sacrifice, are we ready to adapt to a new environment and unusual conditions like the hermit crabs?

Hermit crabs are simple organisms but we can learn a lot from them. So let's just take time to observe because nature around us has many good things to teach us so that we can develop good qualities.

That's all for this blog. Thank you for reading and supporting my blog.

It was a wonderful story relating to the life of a person. Yes, the crab is also like a human being. They are reliable, resourceful, and have wisdom. Even if they don't have shells they find ways where they could have their self-protection.

It's really nice to learn the lesson about the resilience of this crustacean. It proves that if "there is will, there's always a way." Thanks @edver143 for sharing this very wonderful post.

That's right @natsve54. These lessons should inspire us as humans to utilize our potentials seriously like the hermit crabs to survive.

Thank you for the information you've shared.

Paborito kong laruin ito noong high school ako, madalas ikinukulong ko sila as garapon tapos pinapakain ko sila ng kanin.

Maraming alamat sir @afterglow sa suporta.

Walang anuman. Mangdang hapon.

That hermit carb we called it "umang" . I played that when I was a kid. There is someone selling umang in front of our the school.

That's right @john0928. There are rumors that umang can be eaten. But I haven't tried it yet.

A wonderful life lesson from you sir. Thank you for sharing.

You are right, we need to be resourceful and adapt to every circumstance in order to survive.

Thank you @mrexperienciado. Hermit crabs are just small and simple creatures. Yet they show great examples.
