Every year, fiestas are celebrated to thank and praise the patron saint for his abundant blessings, such as a good harvest and good health. Here in Cebu, we have the Sinulog Festival in honor of Santo Niño, which is held annually on the third Sunday of January. However, in Agujo, Daanbantayan, it is celebrated on the last day of January and is known as the Sinagujo Festival.
This religious festival features grand street parades, dancing in beautiful and colorful costumes, and lively music played on various instruments.
It was my first time witnessing the fiesta in Barangay Agujo, Daanbantayan. Since it was held on a Saturday when we had no classes, we had the opportunity to explore the annual celebration. I brought my friends with me to make it even more fun and exciting.
As we walked down the streets, we saw many people enjoying videoke. Each household played its own music, making it a bit confusing to focus on one song.
Moreover, it has been a long-standing tradition among Filipinos to share their blessings with others during special occasions, even with people they do not know well, as a sign of hospitality and generosity.
Furthermore, street food is never absent during fiestas. You can find it everywhere, along with toy vendors and other stalls. Many families gather with their loved ones to celebrate. Some even invited us to have lunch at their homes, but we politely declined and thanked them. Their warmth and generosity were truly admirable.
As the saying goes, "It's more fun in the Philippines!" Various cultural celebrations take place every year, fostering a sense of harmony and unity among Filipinos. Foreigners admire Filipinos for being hospitable and welcoming. Most importantly, despite life’s challenges, Filipinos always manage to smile, as if nothing happened.
Overall, it was a wonderful experience to witness the unique way of celebrating their fiesta. Even though Agujo is a small community, its celebration truly captures the heart and spirit of Filipinos.
Mabuhay! Viva Pit Señor! 🎉
