En el año 2010 estaba yo en los años de mejor desempeño en el golf, llegué a tener por aquel entonces 17 de hándicap lo cual era muy bueno para alguien que había comenzado tarde en este juego tan técnico, eso y que ya había pasado largamente los 50 años de edad. Practicaba 3 o 4 veces por semana y jugaba seguido, al menos 2 veces cada 7 días, no solo eso, cuando podía iba a ver jugar a los profesionales, para tratar de aprender más.
Fue justamente ese año cuando en el verano estando de vacaciones en la costa bonaerense fui a presenciar el abierto de Cariló, jugaban muchos compatriotas y algunos extranjeros, principalmente de países limítrofes. Un par de meses después y gracias a una invitación que recibiera del capitán de mi equipo de par 3, pude asistir por primera vez a presenciar un día del campeonato Abierto de la República Argentina, fue para la tercera jornada, día sábado, lo cual haría que me perdiera la definición del domingo, pero ya saben cómo es esto, "a caballo regalado no se le miran los dientes" decía mi abuela.
El abierto de la república es uno de los torneos de golf más antiguos del mundo, se disputa desde 1905 y ha contado en todos estos años con ganadores que han sido estrellas muy reconocidas en el concierto golfístico mundial, algunos de ellos ganadores de torneos mayores. Entre esos extranjeros podemos mencionar a Craig "la morsa" Stadler ganador en 1992, Mark Calcavecchia en dos oportunidades, 1993 y 1995, Mark O'Meara en 1994 y Jim Furyk en 1997. De los nacionales es imposible no mencionar a Roberto De Vicenzo, máximo triunfador en este torneo con 9 títulos, seguido por Vicente Fernandez con 8 y José Jurado con 7, este último un histórico golfista nacional de los años 1920 y 1930, se lo mencioné hace unos días a @fermionico porque el campo donde vamos a practicar lleva justamente su nombre. Otros ganadores nacionales ilustres han sido Ángel "el pato" Cabrera en 3 oportunidades y Emiliano Grillo, actualmente animador del PGA con dos triunfos en ese, el más importante tour de golf de la actualidad.
Volviendo al 2010, ese sábado de marzo, todavía con bastante calor en Buenos Aires, vi por primera vez a un tan Jhonattan Vega, un venezolano de gran físico que me impresionó por su poder cuando lo vi pegar un drive larguísimo y recto en el tee de salida del hoyo 1 de la hermosa cancha del Jockey Club de San Isidro. Recuerdo que estaba ocupando una de las primeras posiciones y no mucho más. Al día siguiente, tarde por la noche, me enteré de que había ganado, relegando al segundo lugar a Andrés Romero, un gran jugador local quien también ganó en el PGA Tour y a punto estuvo de obtener el abierto británico.
Hoy el grandote venezolano comenzó liderando la segunda vuelta del PGA Championship gracias a su extraordinaria primera vuelta del día anterior donde estampó un -7 en su tarjeta, se mantuvo centrado y jugando un muy buen golf durante los primeros 9 hoyos y en los segundos 9, los más difíciles del campo, hizo 3 birdies para consolidarse en la cima del tablero con -10.
Conversábamos con nuestro fundador sobre la concentración y la disciplina que deben tener los golfistas para poder vencer sus propios miedos y dudas además de los contrincantes que también juegan. Estuvo muy bien hasta el hoyo 18, el último de esa segunda ronda donde luego de una mala sacada de un bunker de arena, su pelota bajó por una pendiente saliéndose del green, hizo un buen aproach dejándola a poco menos de dos metros, si embocaba era bogey, falló y se fue con un doble bogey que lo dejó en la cima, pero con -8, abriéndoles la puerta a varios que lo perseguían.
El día aun no termina (Vegas jugó por la mañana) y deberemos esperar hasta más tarde para saber si alguno de sus perseguidores le dio alcance, por ahora los tres o cuatro jugadores que se encuentran por detrás a dos golpes no tienen gran cartel y ninguno de ellos tiene la experiencia de haber ganado un torneo mayor, como tampoco la tiene el venezolano, eso los pone en pie de igualdad.
El peligro está en que algunos de la élite (los primeros en el ranking mundial) se despierten, se acerque en el tablero y comience a presionar, allí se pondrá más difícil. Tengan por seguro que alguno de ellos estará en la definición el día domingo.
Todavía quedan 2 días completos, 36 hoyos en los que cualquier cosa puede pasar, sin embargo, no pierdo la esperanza de que Latinoamérica pueda ganar su propio Grand Slam, ya tenemos a De Vicenzo ganador del abierto británico y Cabrera ganador del Master y del Abierto de los EEUU, solo nos queda este y estaré allí apoyando y rezando para que Jhonattan Vegas pueda quedarse con el preciado trofeo.
A Latino leads the PGA
In 2010, I was in my prime golf years. I had a handicap of 17, which was very good for someone who had started late in this highly technical game and was well over 50 years old. I practiced three or four times a week and played regularly, at least twice every seven days. Not only that, but whenever I could, I would watch the professionals play to try to learn more.
It was precisely that year, during the summer, while on vacation on the Buenos Aires coast, that I went to watch the Cariló Open. Many of my countrymen and some foreigners, mainly from neighboring countries, were playing. A couple of months later, thanks to an invitation from the captain of my par-3 team, I was able to attend a day of the Argentine Open Championship for the first time. It was for the third round, Saturday, so I wouldn't have missed Sunday's final. But you know how it is: "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth," my grandmother used to say.
The Argentine Open is one of the oldest golf tournaments in the world. It has been held since 1905 and over the years has featured winners who have become highly recognized stars in the world of golf, some of them even winning major tournaments. Among those foreigners, we can mention Craig "the Walrus" Stadler, winner in 1992; Mark Calcavecchia twice, in 1993 and 1995; Mark O'Meara in 1994; and Jim Furyk in 1997. Among the national players, it's impossible not to mention Roberto De Vicenzo, the tournament's most successful player with nine titles, followed by Vicente Fernandez with eight and José Jurado with seven. Jurado was a historic national golfer from the 1920s and 1930s. I mentioned him to @fermionico a few days ago because the course where we're going to practice bears his name. Other illustrious national winners have included Ángel "the Duck" Cabrera three times and Emiliano Grillo, currently a PGA Tour host with two wins on the most important golf tour today.
Going back to 2010, that March Saturday, still quite hot in Buenos Aires, I saw Jhonattan Vega for the first time, a physically powerful Venezuelan who impressed me with his power when I saw him hit a long, straight drive off the tee of the first hole of the beautiful Jockey Club de San Isidro course. I remember he was in one of the top spots, but not much else. The next day, late at night, I learned he had won, relegating Andrés Romero, a great local player who had also won on the PGA Tour and was on the verge of winning the British Open, to second place.
Today, the big Venezuelan led the second round of the PGA Championship thanks to his extraordinary first round the day before, where he posted a -7 on his scorecard. He remained focused and played very good golf during the first 9 holes, and on the second 9, the most difficult holes on the course, he made 3 birdies to consolidate his lead at -10.
We were talking with our founder about the focus and discipline golfers must have to overcome their fears and doubts, as well as those of their opponents. He was doing very well until the 18th hole, the last of the second round, where, after a poor drive from a sand bunker, his ball rolled down a slope off the green. He made a good approach, leaving it just under two meters away. If he holed it, it would have been a bogey. He missed and ended up with a double bogey that left him on top, but at -8, opening the door for several others chasing him.
The day isn't over yet (Vegas played in the morning), and we'll have to wait until later to find out if any of his pursuers have caught him. For now, the three or four players two strokes behind him aren't well-known, and none of them have the experience of winning a major tournament, nor does the Venezuelan, which puts them on an even playing field.
The danger is that some of the elite (the top players in the world rankings) will wake up, get closer on the leaderboard, and start putting pressure on, and it will get more difficult there. Rest assured, one of them will be in the final on Sunday.
There are still two full days left, 36 holes in which anything can happen, however, I haven't lost hope that Latin America can win its own Grand Slam. We already have De Vicenzo, winner of the British Open, and Cabrera, winner of the Masters and the US Open. We only have this one left, and I'll be there cheering and praying that Jhonattan Vegas can claim the precious trophy.

Es de las cosas que disfruto del deporte de este lado del meridiano de Greenwich porque los latinos disfrutamos con el triunfo de los nuestros y, no me refiero solo a los de nuestros países de orígenes, sino, de toda nuestra región.

Es muy cierto y pese a que, por supuesto simpatizo más por mis compatriotas, siempre me alegra que un latinoamericano pueda triunfar en esos deportes que son casi exclusivos de los norteamericanos y europeos, principalmente en las competencias automovilísticas, el tenis y el golf.
Por aquí con mucha lluvia lo que viene bien para quedarse en casa y ver deportes todo el fin de semana.
