Australia vs Canadá. // Final definida en la Copa Davis 2022. [Esp - Eng]

Han sido unas semifinales de gran calidad y emoción en las jornadas de ayer y hoy en los play-offs de la mítica Copa Davis, el torneo que representa el campeonato mundial de tenis y que contaba con cuatro clasificados de lujo para esta instancia. Considero que el factor sorpresa tuvo mucho que ver, para añadir esos ingredientes extras que aderezaron la competición, haciendo referencia a los casos de los seleccionados de Italia y Australia respectivamente, dado que tanto Croacia como Canadá, contaban con un marcado favoritismo desde que superaron la fase de grupos hace dos meses.

El telón fue abierto ayer viernes, con el choque entre balcánicos y oceánicos en la pista rápida acondicionada de Málaga, una superficie que propicia el espectáculo del juego rápido y rasante; y pone a prueba las condiciones físicas de cada equipo. Por cierto que, este esquema de equipos le hace honor al trabajo en conjunto, más allá de la individualidad que rige el deporte blanco, por lo que el espíritu de competir por tu país sin mencionar el nombre de cada jugador, es lo que le da ese toque de competencia mundial. Y esto es algo que en lo particular, me encanta.

Claro está, el ranking de cada atleta es la referencia más clara para definir quien juega primero y quien segundo y eso lo define el capitán del equipo con anticipación al encuentro; por ello me sorprendió ver salir a Thanasi Kokkinakis, en lugar de un Jordan Thompson; dado que Thompson tuvo excelentes resultados la fecha anterior ante Países Bajos; pero de esto se trataba la jugada estratégica de un Lleyton Hewitt que influyó muy positivamente, aupando a su seleccionado desde la capitanía; su actitud era de apoyar y dar las indicaciones correctas, de parte del último Nº1 Aussie.

Alex rompería con rapidez el ritmo de la primer raqueta croata (Marin Cilic), quien recibió par de quiebres y colaboró con el rival, al incurrir en numerosos errores no forzados a las líneas; recuerdo haberle dicho mentalmente: ¡Si sabes que estás fallando tus tiros paralelos, intenta jugar hacia el centro de la pista! Así al menos pones la pelota en juego. Recuerdo que en mi anterior post dije "Ahora los oceánicos disputarán el día de mañana, a la poderosa selección Croata, en la que no descarto una definición en el partido de dobles y eso significa una ventaja para los balcánicos con la dupla de Pavic / Mektic; aunque los australianos tienen doblistas de lujo (Kokkinakis, Purcell y Ebden) para enfrentarlos"; Pues el australiano Mathew Ebden al parecer se lesionó y en su lugar, salió el aguerrido Jordan Thompson, otro acierto de Lleyton al colocarlo junto con Max Purcell, ya que éstos lograrían una épica remontada.

Desde un punto muy crítico, me dio la impresión de que Mate y Nikola estaban ansiosos, quizás tanto favoritismo les afectó un poco; aunque estoy seguro que fue más por causa del buen juego de Jordan y Max, que atacaron muy bien al juego bajo y corto; y al perder el primer set en el tie break, no se amilanaron sino que salieron más enfocados a la segunda manga. También vi una clara estrategia de Thompson, de jugarles justo al medio de ambos croatas y eso causó algunos enredos entre ellos, siendo Pavic diestro y Mektic zurdo, casi chocaban sus raqueras y no lograban contrarrestar estos tiros.

From a very critical point, I had the impression that Mate and Nikola were anxious, maybe so much favoritism affected them a bit; although I'm sure it was more because of the good play of Jordan and Max, who attacked very well to the short and low game; and losing the first set in the tie break, they were not intimidated but came out more focused on the second set. I also saw a clear strategy of Thompson, to play them right in the middle of both Croatians and that caused some tangles between them, being Pavic right-handed and Mektic left-handed, they almost collided their racqueras and failed to counter these shots.

Con sinceridad, celebré esta hazaña de los australianos y agradecí que un canal argentino haya transmitido el evento sin cortes comerciales ja,ja,ja. Hoy Italia estuvo cerca de repetir el capítulo de los Aussies, aunque a la inversa; porque Lorenzo Sonego iniciaba con una merecida victoria ante un Denis Shapovalov que sigue en deuda en los momentos de la verdad; su juego espectacular no es suficiente para cerrar los partidos y eso le hace deslucir un poco, en esa dura batalla de más de 3 horas. Lorenzo Musetti volvería a perder (racha negativa) ante Félix Auger-Aliassime; entonces otra vez sería en la modalidad de dobles, la definición del segundo finalista.

Honestamente no entendí la presencia de Matteo Berrettini en sustitución de Simone Bolelli, pero al parecer fue una lesión de último momento. Claro que Matteo es un grande en la pista, pero tiene meses inactivo por una lesión en su pie izquierdo y utilizarlo en un momento tan crucial para su selección, no me pareció tan acertado. En cambio, el portentoso Félix Auger-Aliassime se echó el equipo al hombro y ganó ante Musetti para luego volver a hacer dupla con Vasek Pospisil; su golpe al ganar el 1er set en el tie break, fue crucial y significó un bajón moral para Fabio y Matteo.

Algo que no me gustó, fue cuando en uno de los quiebres de los norteamericanos, Matteo dejó caer su raqueta y me pareció una señal de rendición antes de tiempo. En el tenis y en cualquier deporte, si te sientes perdido difícilmente ganarás; así que tu estado mental es muy importante; un marcador adverso no te puede desmotivar durante la competencia y eso marca la diferencia entre los buenos y los mejores, entre los jugadores y los campeones. Fognini siendo el veterano en pista, estuvo corriendo y construyendo buenos puntos, pero Berrettini estaba falto de reacción y no tuvo tiempo de recomponerse.

Fueron dos sets corridos en 2 horas de partido; este resultado habla del gran momento de Canadá como selección, ya que son los campeones de la ATP CUP, el evento que compite precisamente con la Davis. La de mañana será una batalla digna de una final, ambos llegan muy motivados y con sus propios motivos para ganar; no obstante, la determinación de cada selección será clave. Por parte de Australia está la actitud ganadora, el apoyo significativo de Lleyton Hewitt y su poderío en los dobles; mientras que Canadá cuenta con la potente raqueta un aguerrido Auger-Aliassime, que parece imbatible cuando defiende sus colores patrios. Amanecerá y veremos quien se lleva la copa centenaria, ambo me gustan así que gane el mejor.

I honestly didn't understand the presence of Matteo Berrettini replacing Simone Bolelli, but apparently it was a last minute injury. Of course Matteo is a great on the court, but he has been inactive for months due to an injury in his left foot and using him in such a crucial moment for his national team, didn't seem so wise to me. On the other hand, the portentous Felix Auger-Aliassime took the team on his shoulders and won against Musetti to then return to duet with Vasek Pospisil; his stroke to win the 1st set in the tie break, was crucial and meant a moral downturn for Fabio and Matteo.

Something that I didn't like was when Matteo dropped his racquet in one of the American breaks and it seemed to me a sign of surrender before time. In tennis and in any sport, if you feel lost you will hardly win; so your mental state is very important; an adverse score cannot demotivate you during the competition and that makes the difference between the good and the best, between the players and the champions. Fognini being the veteran on court, was running and building good points, but Berrettini was lacking of reaction and had no time to recover.

It was two straight sets in 2 hours of match; this result speaks of the great moment of Canada as a national team, as they are the champions of the ATP CUP, the event that competes precisely with the Davis Cup. Tomorrow's match will be a battle worthy of a final, both come highly motivated and with their own reasons to win; however, the determination of each team will be key. On the Australian side there is the winning attitude, the significant support of Lleyton Hewitt and his power in doubles; while Canada counts on the powerful racket of a tough Auger-Aliassime, who seems unbeatable when defending his national colors. The day will dawn and we will see who wins the centennial cup, I like both, so may the best player win.
