DIY Toilet Lid Change

in DIYHub • 2 years ago

Hi fellow DIYers,

Today I'm sharing something that may not be very sexy or fun: changing stuff on a toilet! 🤢

DIY Toilet Lid Change

It's been a while since I've done a DIY post! I decided that I needed to do one and one of the things we did at home was make some small changes to things. The toilet in one of our bathrooms had a really old and gross lid! Time to go!

The lid was from when the condos were built, not a huge deal but since we are going to be selling the place in the coming weeks and months, we knew we should make some really inexpensive improvements to improve the overall look of the place. A toilet lid was an easy one and only 25$!

As you can see, it was an old metal lid (I think?) that was having some serious paint chipping on it so we said screw it, let's get rid of it and get one that looks decent!

I don't know if I've swapped a toilet lid/seat before so I wasn't expecting it to be very difficult but what I wasn't expecting was for it to be as tricky to figure it out as it was! The other toilet lids we have in the house are newer it seems, since they have lids that just gently secure to the toilet with a plastic screw or something up top. Not this one!

I guess I never thought to look under the toilet. I was like what the hell, why won't the toilet lid budge when I try to remove it?! Then I had to look up a few videos and found one that mentioned old toilets which this one was. Then I saw screws underneath. Ding! It was what I had encountered as well here.

Thankfully doing a lot of car and mechanical work in my fun time, I had ample tools for the job! Had my trusty 1/2 inch socket ratchet here to do the job with a nice hardened steel 14mm socket to destroy these bolts!

Not as easy to take a photo and try to unscrew at the same time but I managed to get 'er done!

Now that the old thing was gone, time to install the new one! One of the things I did to make sure was give it a rough fit. Things lined up well, so onto the cheap plastic screws!

For once, things lined up pretty well!

I think this was an easy improvement that we made for sure. Inexpensive and it adds to the appeal of the unit since the other parts of the bathroom aren't really awesome but we don't have the time or funds to waste on that so we are leaving it as is.

Time to toss this old clunk into the dumpster!

It was an overall fun quick little DIY project. The little man helped out and had some fun with it alongside me so it was a good way to spend 20 minutes after work I think!

Serious man skills... You don't know how important this stuff is until you can't poop...

Hahah I couldn't imagine not being able to poop due to a stuck toilet seat! That would be awful lol. I don't think it's glamorous work but it was needed regardless!

Haha! You are the man with skilz! Who knew it would be worth 61.00 to change a toilet seat! You have my respect!

That was a commercial-grade toilet, no? The way it was bolted in the back looked just like a commercial one or a high-end one. One of the other. Anyway, it was fun to watch!

Good luck on the sale of your house!

I don't think it was a commercial grade toilet, no. They did everything cheap as shit in the condo we live in so I think this was the cheapest toilet they could get en mass.

The lid was a bit more expensive because it's one of the slow close ones, don't know if you've seen them but they are nice! This ones the cheapest one at the store but I didn't mind, we did it for the resale value. Added more by putting in that toilet seat than leaving the old gross one lol. We might do the others as well.

Thanks, I have a few more projects to finish to get the place ready for listing but it shouldn’t be too bad. Once we go look at houses in Florida we will have a much better idea of what timeframe we are looking at with selling this one. Hoping 6 months and we can be out but we don’t want to jump the gun.

I just got rid of my Florida house last year when the market corrected and everything started taking a hike up. It was fine with me because I bought it as one of my first houses when I was there for one year working. Anyway good luck and if you fix up all the little things that give it the wow, it should sell pretty fast. I have always found with the things that get the most value or the bathroom and the kitchens. Pretty sure you already know that. Florida? I don't know where you live but the only thing I hate about Florida was when I took a shower and went outside it was just like I needed another shower. It can be pretty hot there. Of course when I visited it never seemed that bad but when I live there for a year or two different times oh, I was ready to move. Good luck with all and which part of Florida are you moving to?

We have lived in the Boston area our whole lives and have been looking for a place to move for a few years now. We always liked Florida for the year round ability to be outside enjoying the sunshine! I don’t mind the cold too much but my wife hates it now so we will give it a try and see how we like it. I don’t think we will move back up to New England full time again, I would love to spend my time exploring down south as much as we can!

We did the counters in the kitchen and a new sink, as well as redid the floors. The rest of the stuff is too expensive to bother doing and won’t be a good return on investment so we are good with that. Bathroom floors are done as well, and I think it will be done at that. Now the biggest problem is cleaning the place out so it’s ready hahaha. We’ve collected a lot of stuff over time! Comes with having a toddler that’s for sure lol

Lucky on the Florida house! We are kicking ourselves for not buying a place for 75k when we could have. Now those houses are going for like 250 sadly lol

We are looking at southern or southwest Florida. I want to be on the gulf side so there's less severe hurricanes lol

Yes! I bought mine in a depressed market. I am from Connecticut and I LOVE Boston! My grandfather's people are from there. It is one of my favorite hangouts back home. That and NYC.

I have never lived back up there as opportunity never knocked, but, still love New England. Florida is great for the year-round outdoors, especially if you love boating/gold. I like southwest and I also lived up in Mexico Beach on the Panhandle. Sadly, the entire street was taken out by Hurricane Michael. Usually, there is more hype than damage, but, it can be damaging.

Well, sorry for talking your ear off!

But, the hurricane parties are the best!

I've never changed a toilet seat before. I'm delighted to see your informative post. Thank you for taking the time to photograph and post this helpful post👌 God bless you dear @cmplxty

Thanks for stopping by! It's not glamorous that's for sure but it's one of the things that we can do ourselves! Keeps me busy that's for sure! :D
