~DIY~ Built a Loft In My Dad’s New Shed ~DIY

Time to bust out the old framing tool belt that’s been hanging in the garage collecting dust. My Dad recently had a shed built on the side of his house. It’s a barn style shed so it has a pretty tall roof. Which is perfect in order to build a little loft inside for extra storage.

He loves goose hunting… well pretty much all hunting and fishing but he really love goose hunting. Those goose decoys he uses are big and take up a ton of room in the garage. They are light weight and storing them up in this shed would be perfect. Plus he can get all his yard working stuff organized in the lower portion of the shed. Now maybe my Mom can park her car in the garage once all the decoys are in the new shed. LOL

This should be a quick little project. Should be… every time I say that before starting a project it comes back and bites me in the ass. Some sort of issue happens or multiple issues and it ends up taking twice as long as expected.

The shed is 10 feet by 16 feet with a nice concrete floor. The idea is to install 2X6 spanning across the top of the walls and throw some 1/2 inch plywood on top. Simple and shouldn’t take too long.

We measured and cut the 2X6 to it would rest on top of the walls and nail to the roof trusses. We cut an angle on the end so that the 2X6 rested completely on the wall.

It took a thinking in order to get them in there due to the angle of the roof. The higher we went the narrower it got. Plus they had to go past the roof trusses. In order to make them fit we had to cut them an inch and a half shorter then the total distance of the outside edge of the wall. This still gave us plenty of room to mail them to the side of the trusses.

After we got them all in place and nailed to the trusses, we added some blocking down the middle for some extra support.

We made the loft 8 feet deep so that we wouldn’t have to cut any sheets of plywood. Well except for a strip down the middle but there was no way around that.

With the last piece of plywood cut and staples in place this loft is finished!!

My dad plans to insulate it just to keep the temperature a little more stable inside. Around here we get pretty extreme hot and cold. The winters get down below 0-F and the summer get 110-F. This little project only took us about 1-1/2 hrs to complete. Thanks to the use of my air nail and staple guns.

Nothing like a little Father and Son project to spend some quality time together. I always enjoy taking the 1 hour drive over to give my Old Man a hand. I do have 2 brothers that live a couple miles away from him but I’m his go-to Son when he wants a project done. wink:wink
