Alone In War And In Death

My husband just got back from his two year long military service right at the center of the taliban war in Iraq, I made sure I was the first person to welcome him at the airport, I saw him walking down the airplane steps fully adorned in his uniform, looking all official and handsome, I felt like running into the tarmac and hugging him right there. Its been two long years of not being able to hold on to him, so you wouldn't blame me. I held a piece of cardboard with his name boldly written "Sergeant Paul Mc'tominay", as soon as he passed the security check I ran towards him and as soon as I got close enough, I literally jumped on him, he was a little surprised, but luckily I wasn't on the heavy side so he was able to catch me right in the air with a full on bear hug. We sorted his luggage and were about to get into my car when I noticed someone staring at me right across the car park and I think I recognised him.

It was a total barrage of questions in the car, I just kept on asking about his time in the war, how his friends were, which turned out to be a sour topic, he explained that he had lost two close friends to the war and many other comrades, I saw he was about to have an emotional breakdown, so I proposed we had dinner at a McDonald's restaurant not too far from home, he didn't refuse, I got the chance to also tell him a little about what he missed at home. A Chessburger and a Pepsi after, we were good to go. We stepped outside the restaurant and "Holy God", right across the street was that creepy guy staring at me, I saw him a little better this time, he was most likely in his early thirties, average build and looked Asian to me, like those pictures of terrorists you see on T.V, I didn't want to seem racist but it couldn't be coincidence seeing the same man twice in one day. I called my husband's attention to the man, but by the time I looked back, he wasn't there, I didn't want to bother him too much, so I just asked him to shrug it off.

Getting home was a Hugh relief for me, cause I barely said a word in the car after that man just seemed to disappear in broad daylight. I kept looking at the rear view mirror of the car hoping no one was following us. Regardless of how I felt, I had to keep it together for my husband. While he had his bath upstairs.

I started getting things set for dinner. I was cutting the carrots when I saw him, the same man for the third time getting down from a taxi three blocks from my house, I knew something was definitely messed up. I was about to slap myself wishing it was an hallucination, then he looked towards the window and I could have sworn he saw me, cause he started jogging towards our house, I ran towards our front door just in time to lock the door and "DHUUM", he tried breaking down the door, my husband ran downstairs when he heard the sound, the weird man was already walking towards the back door when he got down I was about to go lock the backdoor when I tripped, but my husband got the idea, he got there late but he got into a wrestle with the stranger, in those last seconds I saw three things, A hand grenade being set off, my husband screaming for me to take cover and then the stranger screaming "Allah is the greatest".

I woke up on an hospital bed, with both my legs gone and half my face burnt, I was later told that my husband took most of the grenade's impact, the stranger was later identified to be a taliban ring leader who followed my husband into the USA. After he spent Two years away from me in war he came back only to leave me again in death. Two weeks later I decided to take my own life I couldn't stand the guilt of getting to live while he wasn't with me.
