Hoy es jueves, «𝐞𝐥 𝐜𝐮𝐞𝐫𝐩𝐨 𝐥𝐨 𝐬𝐚𝐛𝐞», 𝐞𝐥 𝐝𝐢́𝐚 𝐝𝐞𝐥 #𝐓𝐁𝐓. Casi se me escapa el jueves sin cumplir con el ritual del #TBT, pero el corazón tiene su propia memoria y hoy me reclamó un espacio para volver a mirar estas fotografías.
Son tantas las fotografía que se tienen ctualmente en físico o en digital. Todas llenas de historia; tantas historias, que nos cuesta mucho decidir por cual publicar. Así que la foto que publicaré hoy será sacada al azar.
La Generación Alfa, Herederos del Mañana
Hay fotos que no se miran con los ojos, sino con la memoria. Hace unos días recibí una imagen que parece un mural de esperanza pintado sobre las escalinatas del Barrio Vista Hermosa, en Caracas, mi querida y lejana Venezuela. Allí, frente a las rejas de hierro que custodian los hogares de la casa materna, un grupo de niños posa con esa naturalidad que solo la infancia conoce. Entre ellos está Theo, el hijo de Junior y nieto de mi hermano Henry, liderando sin saberlo una legión que el mundo ha decidido llamar: ¡la Generación Alfa!.
¿Qué tan "alfa" son estos niños de la parroquia donde crecí en las décadas 1960-70? La perspectiva de Mark McCrindle, el investigador social australiano que acuñó el término, la define como "nacidos entre 2010 y 2024", como la primera generación totalmente nacida en el siglo XXI (la era digital). Según McCrindle en su obra Generation Alpha, ellos son "el experimento tecnológico más grande de la historia", niños que antes de hablar ya sabían deslizar el dedo por una pantalla táctil, sorprendente ¿no?
Pero al observar la foto y compararla con el mundo, noto algo fascinante. En Europa, el movimiento Alfa se define por la hiperconectividad, la inteligencia artificial y una infancia de diseño. En cambio, los niños de Vista Hermosa son "¿Alfas de asfalto?". En la fotografía vemos a un pequeño con la camiseta de la selección argentina —la 10 de Messi, el ídolo global de su tiempo—, una niña con un morral de Frozen y otros con gorritos de colores. Son hijos de la resiliencia venezolana.
La diferencia con el niño europeo o canadiense, es tajante, pero no necesariamente desventajosa en el espíritu. Mientras que en Ontario (Canadá) o en Berlín (Alemania), un niño Alfa vive en una burbuja de servicios garantizados y ocio digital estructurado; el niño de Caracas ha crecido sorteando "apagones", aprendiendo a valorar el agua que llega por tubería y, sobre todo, cultivando la "calle" y la vecindad, aunque poco a poco portan un celular que se han hecho más accesible... El Alfa venezolano es un nativo digital que, a falta de internet, sabe jugar aún a las escondidas en el callejón. Su "software" mental está programado para la adaptación rápida; son expertos en resolver con lo que hay.
Ellos son el cierre de un ciclo. En diciembre de 2024, se cerró el libro de los Alfas para dar paso a la Generación Beta (2025-2039). No sé si estaré aquí para verlo con total nitidez, pero los "Beta" nacerán en un mundo donde la frontera entre lo humano y lo artificial es ya, casi invisible.
Este #TBT es más que un recuerdo del ayer, es y será una apuesta por el futuro. Theo y sus amigos, con sus sonrisas francas frente a la cámara, nos quieren transmitir que no importa cuánta tecnología los rodee, el abrazo del vecino, el juego en la escalera y la bendición de los tíos y abuelos, y claro, de sus padres, seguirá siendo el sistema operativo más importante impulsará sus vidas. Son ¡Alfas!; un rotundo SI..., pero con el sello imborrable de la Caracas que nunca se rinde... Un abrazo lleno de bendiciones para los niños alfa del mundo, de ellos es el mañana que nosotros dejaremos en su momento.

Today is Thursday, “the body knows”, the day of #𝐓𝐁𝐓. I almost let Thursday slip by without observing the #TBT ritual, but the heart has its own memory and today it claimed a moment for me to look at these photographs again.
There are so many photographs we have nowadays, whether physical or digital. They’re all full of history; so many stories, in fact, that we find it very hard to decide which one to post. So the photo I’ll be posting today will be chosen at random.
Generation Alpha: The Heirs of Tomorrow
There are photographs that are not viewed with the eyes, but with the memory. A few days ago, I received an image that looks like a mural of hope painted on the steps of the Vista Hermosa neighbourhood in Caracas, my beloved and distant Venezuela. There, in front of the iron railings guarding the homes of the maternal house, a group of children pose with that naturalness that only childhood knows. Among them is Theo, the son of Junior and grandson of my brother Henry, unwittingly leading a legion that the world has decided to call: Generation Alpha!.
Just how ‘alpha’ are these children from my parish, where I grew up in the 1960s and 70s? Mark McCrindle, the Australian social researcher who coined the term, defines Generation Alpha (those born between 2010 and 2024) as the first generation born entirely in the 21st century. According to McCrindle in his book Generation Alpha, they are ‘the greatest technological experiment in history’, children who, before they could speak, already knew how to swipe their finger across a touchscreen – surprising, isn’t it?
But when I look at the photo and compare it with the wider world, I notice something fascinating. In Europe, the Alpha movement is defined by hyperconnectivity, artificial intelligence and a ‘designed’ childhood. In contrast, the children of Vista Hermosa are ‘asphalt Alphas’. In the picture we see a little boy wearing the Argentina national team shirt — number 10, worn by Messi, the global idol of his time — a girl with a Frozen rucksack and others wearing colourful beanies. They are the children of Venezuelan resilience.
The difference from the European or Canadian child is stark, but not necessarily a disadvantage in spirit. Whilst in Ontario (Canada) or Berlin (Germany) an Alpha child lives in a bubble of guaranteed services and structured digital leisure; the child from Caracas has grown up navigating ‘blackouts’, learning to value the water that comes through the pipes and, above all, cultivating the ‘street’ and the neighbourhood, even though, little by little, they are carrying mobile phones that have become more accessible... The Venezuelan Alpha is a digital native who, in the absence of the internet, still knows how to play hide-and-seek in the alleyway. Their mental ‘software’ is programmed for rapid adaptation; they are experts at making do with what they have.
They mark the end of an era. In December 2024, the chapter on the Alphas came to a close, making way for the Beta Generation (2025–2039). I don’t know if I’ll be here to see it all clearly, but the ‘Betas’ will be born into a world where the boundary between the human and the artificial is already almost invisible.
This #TBT is more than just a memory of yesterday; it is, and will remain, a commitment to the future. Theo and his friends, with their genuine smiles for the camera, show us that no matter how much technology surrounds them, a neighbour’s hug, playing on the stairs, and the blessings of their uncles, grandparents, and of course, their parents, will continue to be the most important operating system for their lives. They are Alphas; yes... but with the indelible stamp of a Caracas that never gives up. A hug full of blessings for the alpha children of the world; tomorrow belongs to them, and we will leave it to them in due course.
