A few days ago I found out about an ordinary, not-so-ordinary challenge to create content for a month, the idea of @rubencress has the purpose of analyzing the objects that are around us and reflecting on what they represent in our lives if they are useful, if we use them or if they are just there reminding our attachment to the material and circumstantial, I found it a wonderful challenge, I was motivated after reading some publications and I promised to do it.

I don't have many objects around me, for some years now I have been throwing away objects that are not useful, giving away the ones I don't use, and having exclusively what I do need. My only possessions are my bed and my clothes because I have bought household items such as the kitchen, washing machines, and furniture, among others, but I have given them to my parents so they do not belong to me, the reality is that I have nothing.

So I was on stand-by with the ordinary, not-so-ordinary challenge until I read @livinguktaiwan's participation and remembered that apart from my bed and my clothes I also have two musical instruments that have their history and that's what I want to write about 😁.

When the four entered my life

At the age of 8, I was a very hyperactive child, I wanted to try everything and I got bored easily, so I was enrolled to study cuatro, which is a stringed instrument, one of the most common in my country Venezuela and that together with the harp and maracas make the Venezuelan folk music.

A week after starting the course I could already execute the rhythm and some chords, I was studying music for two years intermittently, the classes were once a week, that is 4 a month and sometimes I attended 1 or 2 times because I could not pay for all the classes or simply because I was lazy 🙊, I never learned to tune the cuatro and always depended on someone else to do it that made me not practice continuously, remember that I was a child.

Nice memories I have of Christmas time when in the wee hours of the morning I would play aguinaldos in the main church, these are a musical genre similar to Christmas carols.

What I feel when I see this object

My cuatro was forgotten for several decades, until a few months ago I decided to play again and that's when I realized that I did not remember anything 🤦🏽, it was a surprise, a great lesson, accepting with pain that I did not learn. I wanted to go back to study by looking for the old instruction papers and also internet support, but the teaching methods have changed and that confuses me more. There hangs on the wall my old four, with a hole in its side, a product of time and movement without use, I don't even remember how it got that hole.

I see it and it hurts me for the little appreciation I had for it, I didn't take advantage of it, I wasted my time and underestimated my parents' sacrifice in giving me an opportunity that others don't have. However, it is still there, reflecting the attachment I have to it, this object fills a void that I must discover and try to resolve.

My four is not a ukulele

Reading @livinguktaiwan's post the first thing I thought was, that's a four! 🤔, it looks just like a cuatro, remember that I'm not a musician but an apprentice pigeon from decades ago, so I gave myself the task of doing some research and as every day is an opportunity to learn and grow, what I learned I'm going to share it with you.

A cuatro is not the same as a ukulele, although they look the same, they have a similar size, both are stringed instruments, and they have 4 strings, but their difference lies in the tuning of the strings making their sound different.

In the cuatro, the lower strings are high pitched and in the ukulele the upper strings are high-pitched. Another difference is its origin, the cuatro comes from colonial times when the Spaniards brought the guitar which is another stringed instrument, but it has 6 strings, and when the cuatro was created at the beginning it was called guitarist because it was a smaller, remaining with the name of cuatro at the end. As for the origin of the ukulele, it comes from Hawaii.

Can the ukulele be turned into a four?

Amazingly, it seems that yes, both the cuatro can be converted into ukulele and the ukulele into cuatro, according to the information I could read, the process would be changing the pitch of the strings, that affects its tuning, but as on the Internet appear so many things that sometimes are not verifiable, I prefer that a person who is dedicated to the creation of stringed instruments as a luthier @bertrayo is who answers if this is true or not, I would like to know your opinion 🥺😉, it is still interesting that this conversion can be done.

For the avoidance of doubt and to educate that this is what I want, I will leave my friend's comment and he says the following about it

Not exactly. Every instrument has a characteristic timbre because of your shape and other factors. You can change the tuning and it will still sound like what it is but with a different tuning.

Desafío ordinario, no tan ordinario

Hace algunos días me enteré de un desafío ordinario, no tan ordinario para crear contenido por un mes, la idea de @rubencress tiene como propósito analizar los objetos que están a nuestro alrededor y reflexionar sobre lo que representan en nuestra vida, sin son útil, si los usamos o simplemente están allí recordando nuestro apego a lo material y circunstancial, me pareció una reto maravilloso, salí motivada después de leer algunas publicaciones y prometí hacerlo.

No tengo muchos objetos que me rodeen, desde hace unos años me he dado a la tarea de botar objetos que no sirven, regalar los que no utilizo, y tener exclusivamente aquello que sí necesito. Mis únicos bienes son mi cama y mi ropa porque he comprado artículos para el hogar como cocina, lavadoras, muebles, entre otros, pero se los he regalado a mis padres así que no me pertenecen, la realidad es que no tengo nada.

Por lo que me quede en stand-by con el desafío ordinario, no tan ordinario, hasta que leí la participación de @livinguktaiwan y recordé que aparte de mi cama y mi ropa también tengo dos instrumentos musicales que tienen su historia y sobre esto es lo que quiero hablar 😁

Cuando el cuatro entró en mi vida

A la edad de 8 años era una niña muy hiperactiva, quería probar todo y me aburría con facilidad, así que me inscribieron para estudiar cuatro, que es un instrumento de cuerda, uno de los más comunes en mi país Venezuela y que en conjunto con el arpa y las maracas hacen la música folclórica Venezolana.

A la semana de comenzar el curso ya podía ejecutar el ritmo y algunos acordes, estuve estudiando música por dos años intermitentes, las clases eran una vez a la semana, es decir 4 al mes y a veces asistía 1 o 2 veces, porque no podía pagar todas las clases o simplemente porque me daba flojera 🙊, nunca aprendí a afinar el cuatro y siempre dependía de otra persona para que lo hiciera eso hacía que no practicará continuamente, recuerden que era una niña.

Lindos recuerdos tengo de la época navideña, cuando de madrugada tocaba los aguinaldos en la iglesia principal, estos son un género musical parecido a los villancicos.

Que siento al ver este objeto

Mi cuatro quedó en el olvido por varias décadas, hasta hace unos meses decidí volver a tocar y fue cuando me di cuenta de que no recordaba nada 🤦🏽‍♀️, fue una sorpresa, una gran lección, aceptando con dolor que no aprendí. Quise volver a estudiar buscando los viejos papeles de instrucciones y también apoyo por Internet, pero los métodos de enseñanza han cambiado y eso me confunde más. Allí está colgado en la pared mi viejo cuatro, con un agüero en su costado, producto del tiempo y el movimiento sin uso, no recuerdo ni cómo se le hizo ese agujero.

Lo veo y me duele el poco aprecio que le tuve, no lo aproveché, perdí el tiempo y menosprecie el sacrificio de mis padres al darme una oportunidad que otros no tienen. Sin embargo, sigue allí, reflejando el apego que le tengo, este objeto llena un vacío que debo descubrir y procurar resolver.

Mi cuatro no es un ukelele

Al leer la publicación de @livinguktaiwan lo primero que pensé fue ¡eso es un cuatro! 🤔, se ve igual a un cuatro, recuerda que no soy músico sino un pichón de aprendiz de décadas atrás, por lo que me di a la tarea de investigar un poco y como cada día es una oportunidad para aprender y crecer, lo que aprendí lo voy a compartir contigo.

Un cuatro no es lo mismo que un ukelele, aunque se vean igual, tienen un tamaño parecido, ambos son instrumentos de cuerda, tienen 4 cuerdas, pero su diferencia radica en la afinación de las mismas haciendo que su sonido sea diferente.

En el cuatro las cuerdas inferiores son agudas y en el ukelele son las superiores. Otra de las diferencias es su origen, el cuatro viene de la época colonial, cuando los españoles traían la guitarra que es otro instrumento de cuerda, pero tiene 6, y al crear el cuatro al principio se le llamó guitarrita por ser más pequeño, quedando con el nombre de cuatro al final. En cuanto al origen, del ukelele proviene de Hawai.

Sé puede convertir un cuatro en ukelele

Asombrosamente, parece que sí, tanto el cuatro se puede convertir en ukelele como el ukelele en cuatro, según la información que pude leer, el proceso sería cambiando el tono de las cuerdas, eso afecta su afinación, pero como en Internet aparecen tantas cosas que a veces no son verificables, prefiero que una persona que se dedica a la creación de instrumentos de cuerdas como un luthier @bertrayo sea quién dé respuesta si esto es cierto o no, me gustaría saber tu opinión 🥺😉, igual es interesante que pueda hacerse esta conversión.

No exactamente. Cada instrumento tiene un timbre característico por tu forma y otros factores. Me puedes cambiar la afinación y va a seguir sonando a lo que es pero con otra afinación.
