Sir Roger Moore KBE (Oil Pastel Portrait)

The other day I was looking through my older paintings and became curious what progress I might have made over time. To get a better idea, I repainted a 2019 portrait of Roger Moore in the role of James Bond from the same photo I used then.

Back then, getting a likeness right was very much hit and miss (more miss than hit 😜) and I got lucky on Sir Roger's gouache portrait that time. Regardless, I still like that painting, flaws and all.

Now, five years later, I still make mistakes in my paintings. (As a matter of principle, I leave them in, if I discover them after a painting is signed.) Without the benefit of formal instruction, teaching oneself is a slow process, but I'm proud to report that in my portraiture I can produce any likeness at will nowadays - no more misses. 😀

All told, I did about 300 paintings and sketches since 2019, strictly in my free time and with exactly zero skills or talent at the outset. To me, that's proof: painting is no witchcraft, and anybody can learn it. If you have been thinking about starting with art, just do it! What do you have to lose?

Neulich sah ich mir meine älteren Bilder an und war neugierig, welche Fortschritte ich im Laufe der Zeit gemacht haben könnte. Um eine bessere Vorstellung davon zu bekommen, malte ich ein Porträt von Roger Moore in der Rolle des James Bond aus dem Jahr 2019 nach demselben Foto, das ich damals verwendete.

Damals fiel es mir sehr schwer, die Erkennbarkeit einer Person jeweils richtig zu hinzukriegen (meistens ging's voll in die Hose 😜) und ich hatte damals einfach Glück mit Sir Roger's Gouache-Porträt. Trotzdem mag ich das Bild mit all seinen Fehlern auch heute noch.

Jetzt, fünf Jahre später, mache ich natürlich immer noch Fehler in meinen Bildern. (Aus Prinzip lasse ich sie drin, wenn ich sie entdecke, nachdem ein Bild signiert ist.) Sich etwas selber beibringen ist ein sehr zäher Prozess ohne formale Unterweisung, aber ich bin stolz darauf, dass ich heute bei meinen Porträts die Erkennbarkeit auf Anhieb herstellen kann - keine Fehlstarts mehr. 😀

Alles in allem habe ich seit 2019 etwa 300 Bilder und Skizzen gemalt, ausschließlich in meiner Freizeit und mit genau null Fähigkeiten oder Talent am Anfang. Für mich ist das der Beweis: Malen ist kein Hexenwerk, und jeder kann es lernen. Wenn auch Du schon mal darüber nachgedacht hast, dich künstlerisch zu betätigen, fang' einfach an! Was hast Du zu verlieren?
