When we are in Caracas, many are the places that surprise you, yes, we want to go somewhere, the day was very clear, with a not so hot atmosphere, the cool breeze was hitting my face, and I wanted to walk. A few days ago I was in the square near the corner of Santa Capilla and I found this signpost, which showed me how to get to these historical sites, an option to visit. I set out to cross the great Avenida Urdaneta, I followed the path of the pedestrian crossing, arriving at the corner of Veroes, I went up, a few blocks and then I found this roadway or boulevard.

La Primera Escuela de Caracas

Cuando estamos en Caracas, muchos son los sitios que te sorprenden, por sí, queremos ir a algún lugar, el día estaba muy despejado, con un ambiente no tan caluroso, la brisa fresca me golpeaba la cara, y yo quería caminar. Hace pocos días estuve en la plaza que está cerca de la esquina de Santa Capilla y me encontré con esta señalización, que me indicaba como llegar a esos sitios históricos, una opción para visitar. Me dispuse a cruzar la gran Avenida Urdaneta, seguí el trayecto de del paso de peatones, llegando a la esquina de Veroes, subí, unas cuadras y luego me encontré con esta calzada o boulevard.

The road is very beautiful, on both sides we can distinguish the colonial facades, which have been restored and in their interior other atmospheres emerge, but they maintain some vestige of how they were in the colony, others conserve all their structures, a characteristic in common that stands out in them, are the ample windows with wrought iron grilles. On this occasion I entered the Casa de las Primeras Letras Simón Rodríguez, where there are spaces that are still under repair. It bears this name since 2013, when the boulevard was inaugurated, which extends all the way to the National Pantheon.

El camino muy bonito, en ambos lados distinguimos las fachadas coloniales, que han sido restauradas y en su interior surgen otros ambientes, pero mantienen algún vestigio, de cómo fueron en la colonia, otras conservan todas sus estructuras, una característica en común que sobresale en ellas, son las amplias ventanas con rejas en hierro forjado. En esta ocasión entré a la Casa de las Primeras Letras Simón Rodríguez, donde existen espacios que aún se encuentran en reparación. Lleva este nombre a partir del año de 2013, cuando fue inaugurado el boulevard, que se extiende hasta el Panteón Nacional.

In the XVIII century, this house was the first school in the city of Caracas, where the teacher Simón Rodríguez gave classes to the children of the city, among them the child Simón Bolívar. The teacher José Martí, Cuban hero, also taught there. Although the house has been used for different purposes for some time, it currently has several rooms: an exhibition where the costumes worn in colonial times are exhibited, as well as iconographies that refer to the history of the use of the costumes and hats. There is an archaeological exhibition room, where you can see the remains of some pots and jars that were used in those times, which were found during the repairs and excavations that have been made to the house.

En el siglo XVIII, esta casa funciono como, la primera escuela que tuvo la ciudad de Caracas, y donde daba clases el maestro Simón Rodríguez, a los niños de la ciudad y entre ellos al niño Simón Bolívar. También, dictó clases el maestro José Martí, prócer cubano. Aunque de un tiempo para acá, la casa, ha tenido diversos usos, actualmente cuenta con varios salones: una exposición donde se exhiben los trajes que se usaron en la época colonial y unas iconografías que refieren la historia del uso de las vestimentas y sombreros. Se encuentra una sala de exposición arqueológica, donde se pueden observar restos de algunas vasijas y frascos que se usaron en la época, que fueron encontrados durante las reparaciones y excavaciones que le han hecho a la casa.

The place has a very pleasant atmosphere, with a café where the general public can go to enjoy a quiet moment, have a good coffee or a delicious pizza. This space was designed for entertainment and recreation, there is room for reading and culture and all kinds of public. It has a garden that maintains a beautiful greenery, with a wide variety of flowers; it is currently restricted. Its walls, some of which are bare, reveal its original structures, its ceilings, long doors, large windows, carved in fine wood, and the mosaics on the floor are still intact. On entering the house we pass through the hallway, a very characteristic space of these colonial constructions, used as an entrance and exit to the houses, next to the door leading to the street.

En el lugar se percibe una atmósfera bastante amena, posee un cafetín donde el público en general puede ir a disfrutar de un rato tranquilo, tomar un buen café o comerse una rica pizza. Este espacio fue pensado para el entretenimiento y esparcimiento, hay cabida para la lectura y la cultura y todo tipo de público. Tiene un jardín que mantiene un verdor hermoso, con flores muy variadas; actualmente está restringido su paso. Sus paredes, algunas desnudas, dejan ver sus estructuras originales, destacan sus techos, largos portones, ventanales, tallados en fina madera, y los mosaicos del piso se mantienen intactos. Al entrar a la casa pasamos por el zaguán, un espacio muy característico de estas construcciones coloniales, sirve de entrada y salida de las casas, próxima a la puerta que da a la calle.

All these old houses, which are located in the central part of the city, are buildings constructed in past centuries; they are part of the historical and architectural heritage of our capital city. Once we leave the museum, we return to reality, we come across the transformations and advances that the city of Caracas has undergone, in terms of construction; a contrast of beautiful colonial houses; until we reach large modern and challenging buildings, where everything is combined in the same environment and the ordinary citizen passes from one era to another without realising it. They live in a constant coming and going, immersed in their daily activities.

Todas estas casas antiguas, que se encuentran en el casco central de la ciudad, son edificaciones construidas en siglos pasados; son parte del patrimonio histórico y arquitectónico de nuestra ciudad capital. Una vez que salimos del museo, volvemos a la realidad, nos topamos con las transformaciones y avances que ha tenido la ciudad de Caracas, en lo que se refiere a la construcción; un contraste de hermosas casas coloniales; hasta llegar a grandes edificaciones modernas y desafiantes, donde se conjuga todo, en un mismo entorno y el ciudadano de a pie, pasa de una época a otra sin darse cuenta. Ya que vive en un constante ir y venir sumido en sus actividades diarias.

The historic centre of Caracas is very extensive, there is not enough time to get to know every corner of it, but we can discover and visit those emblematic places that take us back to those beautiful stories that uncover our past and make us travel back in time. La Casa de las Primeras Letras Simón Rodríguez, is located in the corner of Veroes, Caracas - Venezuela, Capital District. You can get there by public transport, by metro, by taxi. A place of reference would be Urdaneta Avenue, at the corner of the Santa Capilla Church.

El casco histórico de Caracas es muy extenso, no da el tiempo para conocer cada rincón de él, pero sí podemos descubrir y visitar esos lugares emblemáticos que nos llevan a remontarnos a esas bellas historias que descubren nuestro pasado y nos hacen viajar en el tiempo. La Casa de las Primeras Letras Simón Rodríguez, se encuentra ubicada en la esquina de Veroes, Caracas – Venezuela, Distrito Capital. Te puedes trasladar en transporte público, en el metro, en taxi. Un lugar de referencia sería la avenida Urdaneta, en la esquina de la Iglesia Santa Capilla.
