Today @nomaddreamer and I got the trail later than usual. It was nice for me to be back in the woods, away from the big city and all of the cars that go along with it.
I love getting to be close to my parents and it was wonderful to see my Aunt, but after living in a small town for a year now with the woods right next door, I’m not used to noise and the constant movement of cars!
We were met by a bunny rabbit pretty soon after we started our hike. It was very patient, waiting for us to take its picture before it bolted off.
This moth was also very patient— most of them fly off within moments of me getting my phone out to take a picture, but this one made sure to show off it’s beautiful wing colors.
Later along the trail, I heard vigorous rustling in the leaves. I was confused at first when I pinpointed the source; all I saw were tails that looked like tiny snakes writhing. I got closer and realized it was two lizards or skinks, fighting or mating, I wasn’t sure which!
After some research, I believe they were male coal skinks, some of the shyest and most rarely seen skinks in the area. Males develop the orange head color during mating season, so I’m assuming these guys were fighting for territory.
Today was the most wildlife we’ve seen so far along the trail this spring. I couldn’t get pictures of them all, most take off as soon as I can get my phone out!
I’m looking forward to more wildlife emerging as the warm humid weather becomes the norm for the season and summer takes over; the variety of life in the woods here fascinates me!
