We hiked up to the ridge line and just before the summit, Frankie noticed a rare orange-bottomed but otherwise black bumblebee. He followed it to a hole in the ground where we stopped for ten minutes while various Red-shanked Carder Bumblebees came and went from their nest.
When we returned to the valley floor, an elderly couple were taking a rest. We struck up a conversation and it turned out that they were visiting to spot White Admiral butterflies, and they used to live in our village years ago. We spent half an hour learning all about the history of the area and many of the blank bits in our knowledge have now been filled in.
