Hello Hive and fellow music enthusiasts! It's been a long time since I've been up for writing so I've been a bit rusty, the truth is that even though many of my favorite artists have made their comebacks I didn't have much encouragement or interest in writing about it, but this October I feel particularly enthusiastic and full of energy, so join me in reviewing the most recent kpop comebacks!
LIGHTSUM–Honey or Spicy
Lo cierto es que de LIGHTSUM ya hable tiempo atrás con su comeback “Alive” el cual originalmente me causo una impresión similar a “Honey or Spicy” pero que un día desperté amando y se volvió de mis canciones más escuchadas del año pasado, pero dudo realmente que lo mismo vuelva a ocurrí en esta ocasión.
LIGHTSUM is a band with a mixed discography, half of their releases have ended up in my favorite spotify playlist (for example their EP "Into the light" which became one of my favorite mini-albums of 2022) and the other half...well, let's just say that it hasn't quite convinced me. In the case of Honey or Spice I have mixed emotions, and is that, although it has that fun and colorful "teen crush" style that was quite characteristic during 2016-2019 and that I enjoy to this day, the song as such does not convince me I feel that it is a lot of things that feel empty, as if no verse or chorus really stand out despite its moving composition.
The truth is that I already talked about LIGHTSUM some time ago with their comeback "Alive" which originally caused me a similar impression to "Honey or Spicy" but one day I woke up loving it and it became one of my most listened songs of last year, but I really doubt that the same thing will happen again this time.
Whee In –In the mood
MAMAMOO es probablemente uno de los grupos más icónicos del kpop. Conformado por cuatro miembros que sorprendieron al público con su inmenso talento y gran carisma que las ayudo a posicionarse en una de las industrias más complicadas del momento y establecer en el camino una gran discografía tanto grupal como individual, y hoy hablaremos del regreso solista de uno de sus miembros Whee In con “In The Mood” canción principal de su primer full álbum
No se si esta sea la manera correcta de describirlo pero “In The Mood” ciertamente te pone “IN the mood”, sin duda un título bastante acertado a las vibras de la canción, con un estilo pop suave y un que otro destello R&B, este lanzamiento es sencillo en su composición y pueda que esto la haga carecer de algún gancho que te haga volver una y otra vez pero sin duda al escucharla es toda una experiencia agradable y placentera.
MAMAMOO is probably one of the most iconic kpop groups. Formed by four members who surprised the public with their immense talent and great charisma that helped them to position themselves in one of the most complicated industries of the moment and establish along the way a great discography both as a group and as individuals, and today we will talk about the solo comeback of one of its members Whee In with "In The Mood" main song of their first full album.
I don't know if this is the right way to describe it but "In The Mood" certainly puts you "IN” the mood, certainly a pretty accurate title to the vibes of the song, with a soft pop style and a flash of R&B, this release is simple in its composition and this may make it lacks some hook that makes you come back again and again but certainly listening to it is a pleasant and enjoyable experience.
Xdinary Heroes–Break the Brake
Similiar a LIGHTSUM la banda Xdinary Heroes es un grupo que o me sorprende por completo o me decepciona, sin duda tenemos una relación complicada y más considerando que aunque considero a cada uno de los miembros de esta banda ridículamente talentosos difícilmente logró conectar con su música o el género que exploran normalmente, pero para mi sorpresa “Break the Brake” supero mis expectativas por completo
A diferencia de sus compañeros de empresa “Day6” Xdinary Heroes exploran en su discografía sonidos rock más pesados y combinaciones más arriesgadas y caóticas que a veces puede sonar ajenas a oídos inexpertos ( cough yo cough ) por lo que cuando escuche “Break the Brake” por primera vez sin ningún “pero” de por medio me sorprendió bastante, mi primera impresión fue que aunque sin duda aun puedes escuchar el estilo característico del grupo en la canción aun así se siente como un lanzamiento más “consistente” en comparación a regresos pasado, realmente pude estar al pendiente de los detalles instrumentales y disfrutarlos con plenitud, sobre todo los solos de guitarra en esta ocasión fueron una locura y sin duda elevaron más el resultado final. Una canción que fue una grata sorpresa y que me gustaria escuchar en vivo alguna vez
Similar to LIGHTSUM the band Xdinary Heroes is a band that either surprises me completely or disappoints me, no doubt we have a complicated relationship and more considering that although I consider each of the members of this band ridiculously talented I hardly managed to connect with their music or the genre they usually explore, but to my surprise "Break the Brake" surpassed my expectations completely.
Unlike their company mates "Day6" Xdinary Heroes explore in their discography heavier rock sounds and more risky and chaotic combinations that can sometimes sound unfamiliar to inexperienced ears ( cough me cough ) so when I listened to "Break the Brake" for the first time without any "but!" in between I was quite surprised, my first impression was that although you can still hear the band's characteristic style in the song it still feels like a more "consistent" release compared to past returns, I could really be aware of the instrumental details and enjoy them to the fullest, especially the guitar solos on this occasion were crazy and certainly elevated the final result. A song that was a pleasant surprise and that I would like to hear live sometime.
IVE–Baddie
De IVE ya he hablado antes y si hay algo que caracteriza la discografía de este grupo es la calidad de lanzamiento tras lanzamiento que mantuvieron desde su debut “Eleven” hasta “I AM”, mantener las expectativas e incluso superarlas luego de un debut y primer regreso tan exitosos no es algo fácil y el grupo de chicas IVE logro superar esto y lograr mucho más, pero creo que “Baddie” ciertamente carece de ese “elemento” especial que caracterizo a sus comebacks pasados
“Baddie” es el claro ejemplo de querer hace una canción pegadiza pero no lograrlo…por completo, si bien el coro es lo suficientemente repetitivo para memorizar luego de escucharlo por primera vez, creo que carece de ese aire de novedad que hicieron de lanzamientos como “Love Dive” o “I AM” destacar y volverse hits en su momento, los versos son agradables pero nada único o destacable y su pre coro realmente parece querer llegar a un lado pero pronto volvemos a caer en él un coro repetitivo pero sin gracia en el que me hubiese gustado ver algo más arriesgado en la composición, creo que la parte más memorable para mi fue el rap, no soy de quienes les da importancia a estos y a veces incluso creo que en el kpop un rap resta más de lo que puede aportar, pero en esta ocasión sentí que fue entretenido me gusto el tono de la miembros a cargo de realizarlo. En lo personal encontré su otro lanzamiento “Either Way” más atractivo aunque puedo ver por qué no fue elegido como single promocional
I have already talked about IVE before and if there is something that characterizes the discography of this group is the quality of release after release that they maintained from their debut "Eleven" to "I AM", maintaining expectations and even exceeding them after such a successful debut and first comeback is not something easy and the girl group IVE managed to overcome this and achieve much more, but I think "Baddie" certainly lacks that special "element" that characterized their past comebacks.
"Baddie" is the clear example of wanting to make a catchy song but not succeeding? completely, while the chorus is repetitive enough to memorize after hearing it for the first time, I think it lacks that air of novelty that made releases like "Love Dive" or "I AM" stand out and become hits at the time, the verses are nice but nothing unique or remarkable and its pre-chorus really seems to want to get somewhere but soon we fall back into it a repetitive but unfunny chorus in which I would have liked to see something more risky in the composition, I think the most memorable part for me was the rap, I'm not one of those who give importance to these and sometimes I even think that in kpop a rap subtracts more than it can contribute, but this time I felt it was entertaining I liked the tone of the members in charge of doing it. Personally I found their other release "Either Way" more appealing although I can see why it wasn't chosen as a promotional single.
Por otro lado otros lanzamientos de los cuales no voy a hablar a profundidad, pero de los cuales me encontré disfrutándolos y que en general los encontré divertidos y curiosos de escuchar tenemos a “Invincible” de tripleS EVOlution y “Galileo” de Kep1er
On the other hand other releases which I am not going to talk about in depth, but which I found myself enjoying and generally found fun and curious to listen to are "Invincible" by tripleS EVOlution and "Galileo" by kep1er
