The dot.hack franchise turned 20 a few days ago and that fact filled me with a lot of nostalgia because I have followed everything related to them since almost its beginnings, it is a franchise that covers not only games, but also novels, manga, anime, audio drama, OVAs, it is a whole universe with so many details that it is certainly complicated to explain in a single post or it would become a very tiring one. As I said, I have been invaded by nostalgia so these days I have been taking moments of the night to listen to the Soundtracks of their various materials and I decided to share with you some of the songs that I liked the most and that have a very big meaning for me.
La franquicia dot.hack cumplió hace unos días 20 años y ese hecho me llenó de muchísima nostalgia porque he seguido todo lo relacionado con ellos desde casi sus inicios, es una franquicia que cubre no solo juegos, sino también novelas, manga, anime, audio drama, OVAs, es todo un universo con tantos detalles que es ciertamente complicado de explicar en un solo post o se convertiría en uno muy agotador. Como dije, me ha invadido la nostalgia así que en estos días he estado tomando momentos de la noche para escuchar los Soundtracks de sus diversos materiales y decidí compartir con ustedes algunas de las canciones que más me han gustado y que tienen un significado muy grande para mí.

The World (Extra) – Emily Bindiger
This song was used for the anime .hack//SIGN and belongs to the Soundtrack titled .hack///EXTRA. The song was used as background in some occasions especially when it involved the protagonist's participation with different parts of The World (name of the game in which he was trapped). It has a fantastic instrumental ensemble, a harmony that plays between the use of violin, piano, and various instruments that can be appreciated in different parts having their solos and conjugating a range of sensations. The lyrics are completely in English even though the composer is Japanese and although they speak directly about the protagonist, they project a mention about the feeling of loneliness, what a person who feels misunderstood can go through while walking in the world, the feeling that the world is talking to him to welcome him and at the same time to remind him of his emotions. Although the lyrics may seem sad it is also a way to help shake off those feelings and take action. The melody is perfectly in harmony with each part of the lyrics, starting softly and leaving in my opinion a feeling of being in a wide meadow, the sensation of the sun, and little by little as the song progresses they show you mountains, the cold parts of snowy area, the humidity of the forest, the soft wind in a coastal area. With this song I feel like I am walking through different scenarios.
Esta canción fue usada para el anime .hack//SIGN y pertenece al Soundtrack titulado .hack//EXTRA. La canción se usaba como background en algunas ocasiones especialmente cuando involucraba la participación del protagonista con diferentes partes de The World (nombre del juego en el que se encontraba atrapado). Tiene un conjunto instrumental fantástico, una armonía que juega entre el uso de violín, piano, y diversos instrumentos que pueden apreciarse en diversas partes teniendo sus solos y conjugando un abanico de sensaciones. La letra es completamente en inglés a pesar de que la compositora es japonesa y aunque habla directamente del protagonista, esta proyecta una mención sobre la sensación de soledad, lo que una persona que se siente incomprendida puede pasar al estar caminando en el mundo, la sensación de que el mundo le habla para darle la bienvenida y a su vez para recordarle sus emociones. Aunque la letra puede parecer triste es también una forma de ayudar a sucudir esas sensaciones y tomar acción. La melodía está perfectamente armonía con cada parte de la letra, comenzando suavemente y dejando a mi parecer una sensación de estar en un prado amplio, la sensación del sol, y poco a poco conforme va avanzando la canción te muestran montañas, las partes frías de zona nevada, la humedad del bosque, el viento suave en una zona costera. Con esta canción siento que paseo por diversos escenarios.
Gentle Hands (English) – Tomoyo Mitani
This beautiful song is the main theme of the trilogy of games for Play Station 2 .hack//G.U. and is found in the soundtrack ".hack//G.U. GAME MUSIC OST" It has two versions, in English and another in Japanese, both are sung by the same singer. Just by listening to the piano at the beginning you can guess how beautiful the song will be, even though the game seems to be just an action RPG, it actually has an interesting story and several psychological themes, this theme focuses on the feelings of the protagonist, Haseo, and his desire to get Shino out of the coma she is in. Their relationship is known more in depth in the anime .hack//Roots which serves as a prequel to the game but it is without a doubt a beautiful theme with lyrics that reveal how desolation and pain can turn you off your path even if it was initially for the sake of the person you love, the longing and desire to get that person back makes you so desperate that it makes you find the parts you never wanted to see of yourself, but without a doubt, the pure feelings are still present as a healing force, there is a hope to hold on to. The piano is simply sublime in this song giving the necessary emotional touches, the violin solo puts the necessary melancholy at the right moment and the drums give the overflow of emotions that are missing to keep going. This song since I was a teenager has given me many emotions and even serves to give that impulse to move forward even when your heart feels fragile.
Esta hermosa canción es el tema principal de la trilogía de juegos para Play Station 2 .hack//G.U. y se encuentra en el soundtrack “.hack//G.U. GAME MUSIC OST” Posee dos versiones, en inglés y otra en japonés, ambas son cantadas por la misma cantante. Con solo escuchar el piano del inicio se puede suponer cuan hermosa será la canción, a pesar de que el juego pareciera ser solo un RPG de acción, en realidad cuenta con una historia interesante y varios temas psicológicos, este tema se enfoca en los sentimientos del protagonista, Haseo, y su deseo de que Shino salga del coma en que se encuentra. La relación de ellos se conoce más a fondo en el anime .hack//Roots que sirve de precuela de juego pero es sin duda alguna un tema precioso con una letra que revela el como la desolación y el dolor te puede desviar de tu camino así haya sido al inicio por el bien de la persona que amas, el anhelo y el deseo de recuperar a esa persona te desespera tanto que te hace encontrar las partes que nunca quisiste ver de ti mismo, pero sin duda alguna, los sentimientos puros siguen presentes como una fuerza sanadora, hay una esperanza a la cual aferrarse. El piano es simplemente sublime en esta canción dando los toques emocionales necesarios, el solo de violín pone la melancolía necesaria en el momento justo y la batería da el desborde de emociones que faltan para seguir adelante. Esta canción desde que era adolescente me ha brindado muchas emociones e incluso sirve para dar ese impulso para seguir adelante aun cuando tu corazón se siente frágil.
The Epitaph of Twilight – Yuki Kajiura
The first of this group completely instrumental, another song by the great Yuki Kajiura, this time a background song for the OVAs titled .hack//Liminality from the soundtrack of the same name. One way I define this song is "mystery and intrigue", at the beginning it is simple, a few sounds in perfect harmony but little by little it increases the intensity, as if it was saying "something will happen" and it does happen, then it starts a stronger change giving an interesting emotional charge to give entrance to the violin, that violin is the heart of the song carrying completely the thought that you can have, all its mystery, all the problem, everything that can be hidden, all your feelings are guided by the hand of the violin and then the final notes that little by little are yielding until arriving to how it began, it is as if it gave a total turn without you realizing it. It is a song that particularly helps me to put my mind in order and then return to my main focus.
La primera de este grupo completamente instrumental, otro tema de la gran Yuki Kajiura, esta vez una canción de background para los OVAs titulados .hack//Liminality del soundtrack del mismo nombre. Una manera en como defino esta canción es “misterio e intriga”, al inicio es simple, unos pocos sonidos en perfecta armonía pero poco a poco va aumentando la intensidad, como si dijera “algo sucederá” y sí que sucede, luego empieza un cambio más fuerte dando una carga emocional interesante para dar entrada al violín, ese violín es el corazón de la canción llevando completamente el pensamiento que puedas tener, todo su misterio, todo el problema, todo lo que se pueda ocultar, todos tus sentimientos son guiados de la mano del violín y luego de las notas finales que poco a poco van cediendo hasta llegar a como inició, es como si diera un giro total sin que te des cuenta. Es una canción que a mi particularmente me ayuda a poner mi mente en orden para luego regresar a mi foco principal.
Liminality (full version) – Yuki Kajiura
This song also belongs to the soundtrack of .hack//Liminality but unlike the previous one it does have lyrics and its instruments also play a role in providing a setting. The lyrics have a similar situation to Gentle Hands as it is also from the protagonist's perspective showing her feelings about her boyfriend who is in a coma (common thing in the franchise) but also uses elements from one of the games to tie the stories together. Regardless of how it actually is, what is clear is that the lyrics are a poem in their entirety, the vocalization is impressive and gives that touch of classical music with moments of more modern rhythms in the parts where emotional intensity is needed. It is ideal to listen with headphones or good sound equipment to appreciate it in its totality and detail.
Esta canción también pertenece al soundtrack de .hack//Liminality pero a diferencia de la anterior si posee una letra e igualmente sus instrumentos juegan un rol a brindar una ambientación. La letra tiene una situación parecida a Gentle Hands ya que es también desde la perspectiva de la protagonista mostrando su sentir con respecto a su novio que está en coma (es algo común en la franquicia) pero también usa elementos de uno de los juegos para unir las historias. Independientemente de cómo sea en realidad, lo que sí es claro es que la letra es un poema en su totalidad, la vocalización es impresionante y da ese toque de música clásica con momentos de ritmos más modernos en las partes donde la intensidad emocional es necesaria. Es ideal para escuchar con audífonos o con buen equipo de sonido para apreciarlo en su totalidad y detalle.
Key of the Twilight – Yuki Kajiura
This song is really one of my favorites, it is one of the main background songs of the anime .hack//SIGN and belongs to the album ".hack//SIGN Original Soundtrack 1". This song unlike the previous ones starts directly with a lot of movement but its lyrics are also a poem, it can easily be overlooked due to the constant movement of the instruments that practically steal the spotlight of the whole song, but the lyrics I interpret it as being from the perspective of a child or someone completely pure, someone who wants to move forward and learn a lot about things. You can also see the reflection of what their life will be like once he gets to where they needs to be, you can feel a warmth in the trust they has with who they talks to and showing that they can't do anything if that person doesn't act. In the series it was usually used in scenes where there was a lot of confrontation and the Key of the Twilight theme was discussed and in scenes when searching for it. This song has been with me for more than 16 years and is still in my playlist without fail to transport me to that search for the object that defies the system.
Este tema es de verdad de mis favoritos, es una de las canciones principales de background del anime .hack//SIGN y pertenece al álbum “.hack//SIGN Original Soundtrack 1”. Esta canción a diferencia de las anteriores comienza directamente con mucho movimiento pero su letra es también un poema, fácilmente puede pasar por alto debido al constante movimiento de los instrumentos que prácticamente se roban el protagonismo de toda la canción, pero la letra la interpreto como si fuera desde la perspectiva de un niño o de alguien completamente puro, alguien que quiere seguir adelante y aprender mucho sobre las cosas. También se puede ver la reflexión de cómo será su vida una vez logre llegar a donde necesita estar, se puede sentir una calidez en la confianza que le tiene con quien habla y mostrando que no puede hacer nada si esa persona no actúa. En la serie era usada normalmente en las escenas donde había mucha confrontación y el tema de la Key of the Twilight era discutido y en las escenas cuando se buscaba por la misma. Esta canción la tengo presente desde hace más de 16 años y sigue estando en mis playlist sin falta para transportarme a esa búsqueda del objeto que desafía al sistema.
As I said at the beginning these are just some of the songs I like the most from the franchise and in a second post I will share the last five. I personally consider that dot.hack has excellent soundtracks especially the ones created for their animated adaptations where it is not just simple background music, there is truly a commitment to the melody and when you listen to it you feel that it truly transports you to another place or envelops you in different emotions, you just have to allow its waves to take you.
Como dije al inicio estas son solo algunas de las canciones que más me gustan de la franquicia y en un segundo post compartiré las últimas cinco. Personalmente considero que dot.hack tiene excelentes soundtracks especialmente los que se crean para sus adaptaciones animadas donde no solo es música de fondo sencilla, hay en verdad un compromiso con la melodía y al escucharla sientes que verdaderamente te transporta a otro sitio o te envuelve en diferentes emociones, solo hay que permitir que sus olas te lleven.
