Immer wieder gerne gehört – obwohl der Inhalt schwer verdaulich scheint.

There are those who call it racist — while others consider it politically incorrect.

For today's post in the #threetunetuesday series, which was created by @ablaze, I'm looking at a phenomenon (mystery) that almost all of us have come into contact with over the years. Be it consciously, unconsciously, intentionally or due to ignorance — this remains undecided. However, this should not mean that we should ignore this behaviour without reflection and hope that nobody has noticed it anyway.
What we're talking about is the "good mood party", the social get-together with friends or other events where singing along to songs is almost part of the compulsory programme. And when the alcohol-fuelled atmosphere has reached its peak, the lyrics to the song being sung no longer play a primary role. In moments like these, who voluntarily thinks about whether they are about to lend support to racist slogans or prejudices?

A vivid example of this is provided by a man who is probably not a stranger, at least in Europe. He is regarded as one of the best football goalkeepers, and also represents the German national team in public as its captain — Manuel Neuer.
At FC Bayern Munich, where Mr Neuer was given an employment contract as goalkeeper, he had a coach at his side whom he already knew from his time playing for Schalke 04. This goalkeeping coach originates from the Croatian coastal region of "Dalmatia" and appears to be close friends with Manuel Neuer far beyond the professional sphere.

So what makes this man, who should be very aware of his public popularity, sing along to a song during a holiday with his Croatian best mate in the friend's home country, the content of which he can probably only guess at fragments? We're not even going to talk about being able to understand it here. Because to understand the content, you have to know the performer better. In this case, it is Marko Perković. A Croatian musician and better known by his "stage name" Thompson. It came about because Perković adores the machine gun bearing the same name.
At Perković concerts, fascist gestures are the norm and the "true" fans show their ironclad loyalty by leaving no doubt about their right-wing extremist views with their clothing.
But then there are also the Croats who don't care about such things at all and just wonder why the man who only has nice words for his native country is so criticised? Perković himself claims to have a "clean slate".
Maybe - if it weren't for the black shirt underneath.

Three songs in a direct context / Drei Songs im direkten Kontext

In the early 70s, Ronnie Van Zant (singer of Lynyrd Skynyrd) was quite upset about his colleague Neil Young, who had just criticised the South of the USA for its racist past with the songs "Southern Man" and "Alabama".
Lynyrd Skynyrd, being from the South themselves, didn't want to let this affront to their beloved Alabama go unanswered and wrote the song "Sweet Home Alabama".
It was not only a song of praise for the wonderful landscape and the blue sky, but also for Governor George Wallace, who gave this small, white paradise the strength it needed during the riots against discrimination against the black population by every means possible.
For the liberals in the north, the message is: I'm not bothered by Watergate - so why are you sticking your nose into our business?

Without having to think long and hard, who can tell which song these lines come from?
“Gold coast slave ship bound for cotton fields / Sold in the market down in New Orleans / Scarred old slaver knows he's doing alright / Hear him whip the women just around midnight.”
It would be even better to know what the authors wanted to tell us?
It is actually quite simple: On the slave market, a woman is procured to give the new owner a special kick around midnight.

Even Mick Jagger knows that this text is incredibly badly chosen. In recent years, he has changed the lyrics for his live performances. Apart from the first verses of the song, racism, misogyny and blatant references to the rape of slaves make the song a low point in the Stones' discography.

“Gold coast slave ship bound for cotton fields / Sold in the market down in New Orleans / Scarred old slaver knows he's doing alright / Hear him whip the women just around midnight.”

The final example comes straight from the repertoire of Guns 'n Roses. Unsurprisingly, as Axl Rose is already known for having a divided relationship with homosexuality. With the song "One In A Million", however, he adds a shovelful of prejudice and puts all immigrants in the same pigeonhole.
Axl Rose courts our sympathy with his story of a "small-town white boy" who feels lost when he moves to Los Angeles. But the derogatory language he uses for gays and blacks doesn't help his cause any more than his xenophobic lyrics about immigrants. "Immigrants and faggots, they make no sense to me. They come to our country and think they can do what they want"
“They talk so many (expletive) ways - it’s all Greek to me.”

“They talk so many (expletive) ways - it’s all Greek to me.”

Haha, I'm sure you've taken things to a much higher level with your #threetunetuesday entries, especially with these juicy details. Fuck it, this political incorrectness (whether from the left or right extremes or from nationalities as is the case in the Balkans) has become absurd in these woke times, but it is always provoked by the side that feels offended.
For example, when you mentioned Thompson, the municipality of Maribor banned Thompson, who is supposedly an Ustasha, but for Ceca there was no problem, even though she always accompanied and sang for the Chetnik Duke and was against Slovenes and Croats....
fuck it, it's always a matter of perspective... when you look a bit more into the details... there are more Serbs than Croats living there...

I definitely belong to the species that doesn't care about political correctness at all. Therefore, for me too, a gypsy is and remains a gypsy, has at least one golden tooth, even more gold around his neck and creates music of the finest kind.
As far as Thompson is concerned, he was not the focus in this case, but Manuel Neuer, who is willing to be harnessed to any nationalist wagon as if by remote control. My ignorance and dislike is enough for Thompson. Ivan Zak (the one who, to my amazement, calls himself a musician and singer) ran a club just outside Jastrebarsko before his “career”. This place was bursting with people every weekend because the crème de la crème of Serbian turbo-folk performed there. At the same time, I got a rejection from “Radio-Jaska” for my wish to give Balašević a chance more often.
You can also see from the reactions to the post the fact that I could have excluded the text. 😫😉

We even kind of agree :) 😎
Inače me i za Tompsona i Cecu baš boli ku**c, ionako ne slušam to...
