Declutter challenge - Getting rid of 30 things

in The MINIMALIST8 months ago

Hello everyone! As I've been a little bit overwhelmed by physical things I own and with few areas in my room that have been cluttered recently, I felt the need to purge some of my belongings but not in a way that would be overwhelming. That's how I got the idea to find 30 things I could let go of and decided to share about it with you all.

When I go through my stuff I usually empty out everything - my closet, shelves, all the surfaces and put everything in one or two big piles. I usually do one pile with clothes, shoes, accessories etc. and another pile with everything else. Then I clean all the surfaces and go through every single thing I own, put it back and organize it. Even though this process can last all day and I regret it at some point, it always brought so much peace and clarity once it was done. I am someone who's mental state is much affected by the environment I live in and that's why clutter really bothers me. Lately I've let some of the areas accumulate more things than usual and to be able to put everything away, I need to get rid of some things and make space (designated home) for the things I want/need to keep.

30 things I am decluttering...

1.jpg

1-6: first pile of clothes I no longer need
7-12: second pile of clothes I no longer need (clothing items are going to the recycling)
13: old mini backpack that I used to love but it started to peel so I replaced it with a new one
14: I found this tube top later on as I was trying to reach my goal of 30 things to let go of

15: bra organizer I ordered from AliExpress that came looking like this and it's really hard to use, it just doesn't stay up the proper way and it's a task on its own to put stuff away properly
16: Exit festival bracelet from July this year
17: these few papers I am counting as one (I turned them upside down as I didn't want to reveal the information)
18: a shoe box that has been sitting around for few months now, I thought I would use it as a draw divider but I got a better one for that purpose
19-20: two paper bags I no longer need

21: sticky notes that I got many years ago, I am going to give them to my niece
22: correction fluid of poor quality plus the bottle is almost impossible to open
23: water colors that I am also going to give to my niece, I used some of them once and they have been sitting in a drawer for a while
24: medicine box I was holding onto because I thought I am going to need some information
25: I got this as a vitamin organizer but Monday is annoyingly always open and I didn't end up using it that much

26: scalp massager that I replaced with a better one
27: expired nail polish
28: used up deodorant
29: face cream, I used up almost half of it but I have a full container of my favorite face cream plus an unopened night cream for colder months
30: nail art tool that is just not working for me

There's a few things from these 30 items that were failed AliExpress purchases and that shows me I need to be more intentional with my orders. Since I started buying on this website, I had many orders and most of them were useful or decent quality items I wanted but I guess it's easy to fall into a trap of buying very cheap products that maybe I don't even need or want. Even though I thought it would be easy to find 30 things to let go of, I have to admit it was a little bit challenging towards the end. Over the past couple of months I did occasionally get rid of some things - few old makeup products and brushes, a couple of beauty products, the only pair of sandals I had that I replaced with new ones... Despite a little bit of a struggle this challenge was so much fun and I will try to do it again in October and December and share updates with you all! I am also planning to focus on mentioned cluttered areas of my room and do a much needed pantry declutter so I'll try to put together fun posts with before and after photos.

Thank you for checking out this post and feel free to share about your favorite methods of decluttering, I would love to hear and maybe try them out in the future! :)

It always feels uneasy to take your old items away but you have to in order to have more space for newer items. I bet those are still good stuff but it is good and important to declutter. That is a minimalist lifestyle.

I agree! Sometimes I feel guilty throwing out certain things but I guess it's a lesson I have to learn and be more mindful about my purchases. Sometimes things that used to serve us don't have a purpose in our lives anymore so it's good to let it go.

This is a great way to declutter. I think I'll do the same with my things. Because it really is hard to let go of some things.

Thank you, I'm glad you'll give this decluttering challenge a try and I hope it will be good and fun for you too as it was for me. :)
