My Minimalist Hair Resolution.

in The MINIMALIST5 days ago (edited)

Minimalism is often celebrated for its concepts of simplicity, functionality and intentional living and this extends beautifully into fashion. For me, one of the most enriching minimalist fashion hacks has been the conscious decision to truly embrace and nurture my natural type 4C hair as an integral part of my style identity.

For those who do not really know about the 4C hair type, one thing I can say about it is that it's a character of its own and carrying it confidently has not only reshaped my looks but my sense of self.

There was a time when long braids were my go-to style. A trusted and familiar way to manage my hair. I barely ever went a week without braids and although this wasn't very cost efficient, I indulged the idea of not having to bother about my natural hair. Now, bother is all I do:)

Braids are exquisite and versatile and I hold nothing against them. When made right, they offer convenience, protective styling and endless creative expressions. However, late last year, I made a resolution to carry my natural hair more proudly and frequently. By doing so, I stepped away from always masking my hair under braids.

This shift was motivated not only by a desire to celebrate my hair's inherent beauty, but also to prevent any form of alopecia and in the long run, foster healthier hair growth. Wearing my natural hair has been the key to this, allowing me to nurture it gently.

There are moments when I do not wear my natural hair out to prevent all the moisture from evaporating due to extreme temperatures or simply because I do not have the strength to style my hair. In moments like this, I keep it simple by either donning a cap (face caps preferably) or a short breathable wig.

This easy switch aligns perfectly with my minimalist fashion, no fuss or elaborate processes, just adaptable and effortless style. Life feels good and uncomplicated when I have these easy choices at hand.

The balance between embracing my natural hair and having convenient alternatives goes a long way in enriching my style without conflict.

A slight detour

Caring for my hair type involves intentional moisturising and gentle upkeep, which I've come to regard as a joyful ritual rather than a chore. Since this hair type thrives on hydration, consistent moisturizing is crucial. I wouldn't go into details because I don't want to bore you with my hair care routine. Be that as it may, my routine works for me and that's what truly matters.

As a fashion hack, carrying my natural hair is very practical. It frees me from excess pain and breakage that accompany braids, while I honour my identity. Whether my curls are shaped into an afro, twisted out or tucked under a cap, my style feels intentional and true to myself.

This just goes to show that fashion isn't just about what you wear, but how you carry your identity with grace.Whether you're adorned in natural curls or in minimalist accessories, life and style, are good when they're rooted in authenticity and care.

Now you're convincing me to keep my 4c hair 😭🤣🤣 Listen, I was this close 👉👈 to relaxing my hair because of the stress of maintaining 4c hair? My goodness! And worse of all, when you braid, give it 2 weeks, and it's already rough. Also, because of the side of me that's a bit adventurous, I wanna try dyeing my hair, try every color there is, from ginger to blonde; however, that's like me signing a petition to damage my hair, lmao.

My mum says to try everything now while I'm young, then cut it and start afresh when I'm ready, but to let go of these beautiful curls? I'm having a hard time. Now seeing your post is like the universe telling me, "don't you dare touch your hair". Ha ha 🤣🤣

I absolutely agree with the universe on this one😄. Once you start giving the right amount of love and attention to your curls, you'd be mesmerized.

One thing I can say about this is that it depends on the type of dye you use and the person doing the job. This is because, my sister has dyed the tip of her curls for years now with no breakage but the first time I tried doing this was my last😂.

Beautifully written! Embracing your natural hair truly shows confidence and self-love 🤍

I agree.

Thank you for coming around. 😊
