The smell of flamboyants

There is something magical about the months of may and june. I could say that I was born in June and I am part of that magic, but actually I mean the flamboyants.

They are also known as framboyanes, and I suppose that in other regions they have different names, because even within the same island they are called by other names, although any Cuban who asks for a flamboyán will surely have their eyes shine, full of childhood memories.

May and june are the months in which the rains begin and it is the moment in which these trees decide to flower. Thus, the ground in parks, streets and around houses and buildings, gradually becomes a blanket of fire.

It's nice to sit under this tree, enjoy its reddish shade, the coolness emanating from its trunk, and the subtle smell of its little flowers. Can you ask for more?

But as if that were not enough, their elongated and resistant pods used to serve us as a toy when they left us with them as children and we let our imagination fly.

The funniest thing about their dried pods is that they became musical instruments. They are very loud maracas.

We used to play cockfights with the pistils of the flowers. What can't a child imagine when they have time at their disposal with nature?

Perhaps because of those memories, when I last visited Cuba, I took a long walk to photograph all the flamboyant trees that I found on my way. And next to them that part of Havana that does not usually appear on the covers of tourist magazines, although it is almost impossible to take a photo in Cuba without one of those American cars appearing, as old as the streets themselves.

At the end of the walk, as expected, I sat under a flamboyant tree, leaned my back against its trunk and breathed in the soft smell of its flowers, the ones that still remained on their branches, the ones that withered on the ground.
