As I wrote a few weeks ago, we now have to go to the hospital in Bad Mergentheim more often for aftercare due to a sports accident. If possible, we always combine this with a family outing. Yesterday the weather was fine and we were able to go for a stroll in the pretty little town of Bad Mergentheim. We were able to park right next to the castle and from there we were able to walk into the castle park in bright weather, where a lot of things were already in bloom.

wie ich bereits vor einigen Wochen schrieb, müssen wir wegen eines Sportunfalls nun öfters zur Nachsorge ins Krankenhaus von Bad Mergentheim. Wer verbinden das nach Möglichkeit immer mit einem Familienausflug. Gestern hat auch das Wetter mitgespielt und wir konnten etwas ausgieber in dem schmucken Städtchen Bad Mergentheim flanieren gehen. Wir haben direkt neben dem Schloß parken können und konnten von dort aus auch bei heiterem Wetter in den Schloßpark gehen, wo schon einiges blühte.
Mergentheim Castle, the former castle of the Teutonic Order of Mergentheim, emerged from an 11th century castle, came into the possession of the Order in the 13th century and was declared the permanent seat of the Grand Master in 1568 after the Reformation.

Das Schloss Mergentheim, das ehemalige Deutschordenschloss von Mergentheim, ging aus einer Burg des 11. Jahrhunderts hervor, gelangte im 13. Jahrhundert in dem Besitz des Ordens und wurde 1568 nach der Reformation zum permanenten Sitz des Hochmeisters erklärt.
The medieval moated castle was rebuilt piece by piece during the Baroque and Renaissance periods to create the castle, whose perfect beauty can still be admired today. However, the castle has also been through a lot. At the time of Napoleon, the Teutonic Order (Deutsche Orden) was abolished as part of the secularization process, which put an end to the castle's courtly splendour. Various uses followed from the 19th century onwards. For example, the castle was incorporated into the Kingdom of Württemberg and used as army barracks from 1868.

Die mittelalterliche Wasserburg wurde während des Barock und der Renaissance Stück für Stück zu dem Schloss umgebaut, dessen vollendete Schönheit noch heute zu bewundern ist. Allerdings hat das Schloss auch einiges mitgemacht. Zur Zeit von Napoleon wurde im Rahmen der Säkularisation der Deutsche Orden aufgehoben, womit der höfisch Glanz am Schloss erlosch. Es folgten ab dem 19. Jahrhundert verschiedene Nutzungen. So wurde das Schloß in das Königreich Württemberg eingegliedert und ab 1868 als Kaserne der Armee genutzt.
The restoration phase began in part after the end of the Second World War. The Deutschordenmuseum was also founded during this time. The restoration was completed between 1975 and 1996. It was really worth it. The complex is a masterpiece.

Die Phase der Restauration begann partiell nach dem Ende es 2. Weltkriegs. In dieser Zeit wurde auch das Deutschordenmuseum gegründet. Die Restauration wurde im Zeitraum vom 1975 bis 1996 vollendet. Das hat sich wirklich gelohnt. Die Anlage ist ein Prachtstück.
The Papellallee is beautiful. You can still see traces of the old moat today.

Die Papellallee ist wunderschön. Man kann auch heute noch die Spuren des alten Wassergrabens erkennen.
Today, Mergentheim Castle is a state-owned monument managed by the "State Palaces and Gardens of Baden-Württemberg". We felt very much at home in the castle gardens. The spa gardens are right next door. Unfortunately, we didn't have enough time to explore the spa gardens extensively, but it was enough for a short visit. We'll make up for it on our next visit to Bad Mergentheim.

Heute ist das Schloss Mergentheim ein landeseigenes Monument, das von der Einrichtung "Staatliche Schlösser und Gärten Baden-Württemberg" verwaltet wird. Wir haben uns im Schloßgarten sehr wohl gefühlt. Direkt nebenan ist übrigens der Kurpark. Wir hatten leider nicht genug Zeit, den Kurpark ausgiebig zu erkunden, für eine kleine Stipvisite reichte es aber. Eine Erkundung des Kurparks wird bei unserem nächsten Besuch in Bad Mergentheim nachgeholt.
We discovered a lovely café right in the castle grounds. Children were playing soccer on the lush green lawns. The castle also seems to be home to the tax office and the police. We only admired the castle church from the outside. Unfortunately, we also didn't have time to visit the museum. The kids probably wouldn't have enjoyed it either. But we were able to appease them with a visit to the ice cream parlor in front of the castle ;-)

Direkt in der Schlossanlage konnten wir ein schönes Cafe entdecken. Auf den saftig grünen Rasenflächen spielten Kinder Fußball. Zudem scheint im Schloss das Finanzamt und die Polizei angesiedelt zu sein. Die Schlosskirche haben wir nur von außen bewundert. Auch für ein Besuch im Museum fehlte leider die Zeit. Der Nachwuchs hätte daran aber wahrscheinlich auch keinen Spaß mehr gehabt. Wir konnten sie aber mit ein Besuch in der Eisdiele vor dem Schloß besänftigen. ;-)
