Te Henga beach cave

Te Henga beach is situated 40 mins drive west of Auckland city and is bordered by the Tasman Sea and thr rugged Waitakere Ranges. It is one of the many unique beaches on the West Coast that are made up of black sand due to the amount of iron in it.
One of it's attractions is a huge cave accessible only at low tide.

The cave is truly spectacular and being in it is like being in a cathedral.

Te Henga is also a popular surfing, fishing, and swimming spot that is patrolled in Summer because of the dangerous rips and waves.People drown out here.
This is the deserted surf life saving watchtower in Winter.

The beach on a calm day is beautiful but things can change quickly on the West Coast

At low tide an island is reached to see the amazing colours of volcanic soil and rock exposed around it

Finally on the trip back we passed a winery that has been here for nearly 100 years. It is sad but the growing city will swallow it up for new housing developments and this last building was demolished soon after.
