The Texas Star Hibiscus ..

Is NOT native to Texas, so why is it named Texas Star? Well maybe because of it's shape which has the shape of a star. This perennial also goes by the names Scarlet Rosemallow, Crimson Rosemallow, and Wild Red Mallow. After all, it is in the Mallow family. The plant produces a beautiful flower and loves growing here in our climate or temperate zone in Southern NJ.

I really prefer calling it Texas Star Hibiscus because that one is the easiest to remember for my soft brain. lol. Any how, the name aside, this plant grows pretty fast once it sprouts in the early spring. The stalks of this plant grow to be about 6 to 8 feet tall. This year I trimmed them down to about 4 feet, or just below the windows, because Molly was getting freaked out. She would see them swaying in the wind and start panicking thinking someone was out there looking in the window.

The blooms on these plants are fantastic. They are bright red and quite large. When they are fully opened, they are larger than my hand, with fingers spread out. Hey, maybe I have small hands.. hehe.

IMG_1580.JPG

The flower buds and the post flower seed pods both sort of look the same. They resemble little green lanterns in a way. At least I think they do. Also some people confuse this for Marijuana due to the leaf shape. Although these leaves sort of look like pot leaves, I assure you this is not a pot plant. And before you ask, NO.. I did not try drying it out and smoking the buds.

Each bloom lasts about a week or so, then wilts and falls to the ground. They dry up to almost nothing and blow away in the breeze. The plants produce these awesome scarlet red blooms from early June to late September and even sometimes October if the weather is nice enough.

IMG_1579.JPG

In late October or early November, when I am doing my pre-winter clean up, I will trim them back to the ground. I leave roughly an inch or two of stalk. New Stalks will for the following year from the tubers underneath the soil.. thus perennial. If I would leave the stalks alone, then they would turn brown and not survive the winter. New stalks would still rise the next spring, but the mass of plant material would look messy. I just take them down and save myself the hassle in the spring.

Speaking of pre-winter clean up.. Maybe I will get to that this weekend if the rain holds off. If I do, what you saw today will be no more. For this year at least!

“He told her the story of the missionary's bride who wrote home describing her bungalow in an African forest clearing. "Outside my window as I write is a magnificent hibiscus with hundreds of blooms making a splendid splash of color against the jungle." A year later, she wrote again, and she said outside her window was that "damned hibiscus, still blooming.”

Sort:

Scarlet Marshmallow! That is what I know it as, although, I had forgotten until you said the name. What a wonderful spot of beauty it offers up!

Thanks you so much for it, Brad!

I like that.. A red Marshmallow.. yummy. Year after year of beauty. Eventually I will have to separate them and spread the love to other parts of the yard. I have been wanting to create a pollinators and humming bird garden, but can't decide on a good visible location.

Thank you! for stopping by 😊

I love the beauty you push out! :)

😊 Thank you.. Your too kind to me Denise

I didn't know you are also in Texas! I have never seen that Hibiscus before and it's an extremely large specimen. Cool shots of a super cool flower. Thanks for sharing browski! Keep up the great work.
The Stars At Night Are Big And Bright....

Nope.. In good old NJ. I was like what is castle talking about. Guess I should have proof read a bit better. I went ahead and edited it to make actual sense 🤣. I love Texas though. Great big state!

Thanks for sharing browski! Keep up the great work.

Thank You! And I plan on sharing more in the community until you kick me out 😆. I was on the lookout for a community to share some of my artistic shots in (not just flowers). This may be it!

Example of artistic photo work:

We'll see.. I have a lot of macro stuff I would like to put a story to and share.

Thanks for the support and the encouragement @castleberry 😁

Yes, you can definitely share some artistic shots for sure. I always like to see interesting and artistic photos. Looking forward to seeing what you got!

I should have read better...

here in our climate or temperate zone in Southern NJ

No.. It wasn't you. You read fine. I had something else written in there and it didn't make any sense. My fault entirely. Loving the Pewee through back stuff! 😆

Ok... so i wasn't just a lazy skimmer and it's good to know i'm not going crazy! hahhaa

Hahahaha. Lazy skimmer. That's my label. Lol. No your all good. Definitely my doing. ☺️🤫

That is a really beautiful plant! That is funny you mentioned the leaves because that is the first thing I noticed. You know there had a to a be a point in history where they were just drying and smoking every leaf they came across to see what might happen...

Oh yeah! There was some dummy out there that survived it too (trial smoking). People ask me all of the time, "Is that pot?" I have to laugh. I'm like, "yeah it is. Aren't pot flowers the prettiest thing you've ever seen?" Then they begin to wonder. 😆

They might think twice for sure. Poppies are awfully pretty when they are in full bloom... In Michigan you are allowed to have something like 10 plants for personal use now, so you never know what you are going to find around here.

Whenever I am in Michigan, I am like..

"What The .."

That was quite possibly one of the greatest moments in the history of sports. My brother in law knows what the commentator says by heart. Any time they show it on TV he has to stop what he is doing and watch it. It was so epic. In fact, I am going to go watch it again myself on YouTube. Go Green!

Was thinking about this one this weekend while watching the Alabama vs Texas game.

I totally agree with you. Epic! Go Green!!!

Poor Michigan Punter.. lol 🤣

haha

that damned hibiscus, still blooming

It looks like a plant that is pretty hard to get sick of. What a difference one year in the jungle makes.

Yeah, I had to laugh at that quote too. One year later and nothing much has changed.. still beautiful! 😍

You are also great at photography
And you are very artistic in decorating your post
Few men are like that
Congratulations

Thank you! I practice art as a hobby, so I like to try and add some of that to my posts if I can. 😁

excellent
I can ask what model your mobile is
Photos are too high quality

What a beauty! The flower is huge, with a couple of those one could build an umbrella:))

Lol. I can picture that too! It would be a beautiful umbrella.

Yup it would. Now I have a question for you (Mr. Orchid). I have an orchid that is just not opening its bloom. The flower stays closed and it dries, the leaves look wilted although I do water them. Which could be the cause? I have taken it from the window and placed it to a more shady place but it still is quite ok with the light.

Take a photo sometime if possible and I'll take a look. How many blooms are left on the stalk? Sometimes when there are one or two, the plants will do that.. not put the energy into opening them, but rather focus on recovering from the entire bloom process. Also if a plant is stressed it will do what you are explaining. Leaves will wilt and roots will shrivel.

The flowers are semidried

IMG_20211012_102755.jpg

Hmmm.. May be time to cut the bloom stem back/off so that the plant doesn't waste anymore energy into trying to flower. Looks like that maybe a secondary bloom? Meaning it already bloomed prior to that off of the same stem a while ago?

Because the leaves are wilted, looks like the plant is experiencing water issues. You may want to dump out the bark and take a look at the roots. They should be smooth and greenish.. not grey and wilted. If they are, then it may not be getting enough humidity and air mixture near the roots. Also if the bark is too dense it can have the opposite problem.. too much water. Make sure there is no standing water around the roots.

If you dump out the bark, take more pictures.. I would be interested in seeing the roots.

Here are the pics. The green roots belong to the no blooms orchid. The least pretty belong to the dried flowers orchid. What might be wrong! I repotted them today putting marble stones. I really want these to live as they have emotional value. What should I do?

Yes, the wilted leaves and shriveled roots are there. So why is my orchid stressed then? It had lots of blooms so maybe it was exhausted as it only allowed one or two to blossom and the rest did not open and dried. Now there are barely 3-4 left. I will make a picture and send it to you

Beautiful flower!
The leaves almost don't go with the flower,
(that's hibiscus speaking, hehehe 😝😛🤣, and envious of its flowers!).

That silly hibiscus. And those leaves are very envious very jealous. Hehe.

Thank you! I am loving these big eyed monsters with the big mouths. So stinkin cute!!! 😍

It does look like a star and the color is so vibrant. There are hibiscus in my country and we call it "Gumamela".

Here's a photo I took back then.
And ohh.. I thought there were marijuana growing below it. haha No wonder people were confused. Just dropping by! Have a great one! :)

Hee hee, sure does look like marijuana but believe me it's not. The hibiscus you have here is really beautiful. I wish those types of hibiscus would grow here but the climate is too cold. Sometimes you can find a house plant that looks similar but it's not the same. Thanks for stopping by!

No worries.. I believe you. hahaha
They come in various colors... In our garden, we have yellow, peach and maybe white? haha That true... sometimes or oftentimes, I don't even know their names. lol Have a great one!

That's a lot of different colors. I bet those peach colored ones look awesome! 🤗

They do... they haven't blossomed these days, though... Maybe because it's rainy season? :)
