In December, friends invited us to a ballet show in Mairipora, a town in the state of Sao Paulo (Brazil). Sandra Sueli presented the production based on a cartoon “Kumandra”. The members of her dance school embody the average citizen. Whether young or old, fat or thin, male or female, everyone can take part here. I don't know the story "Kumandra" myself, but I found the show very successful.
Im Dezember luden uns Freunde zu einer Balletshow in Mairipora, einem Ort im Bundesland Sao Paulo (Brasilien), ein. Sandra Sueli präsentierte die Inszenierung frei nach einem Cartoon „Kumandra“ Die Mitglieder ihrer Tanzschule verkörpern den Durchschnittsbürger. Ob jung oder alt, dick oder dünn, männlich oder weiblich, jeder kann hier mitmachen. Ich selbst kenne die Geschichte "Kumandra" nicht, fand die Show jedoch sehr gelungen.
Many of the guests recorded the show on their smartphones and cameras. Since the best camera is always the one you have with you, I pulled my iPhone out of my pocket and thought about the best way to record my impressions. As a light painter, I felt the need to transform the dynamics of the dance into traces of light.
The choice fell on the “Slow Shutter” app. With this app it is possible to freely choose the exposure time. This means I am ideally equipped for action photography.
Viele der Gäste zeichneten die Show auf ihren Smartphones und Kameras auf. Da die beste Kamera immer die ist, die man dabei hat, zog ich mein iPhone aus der Tasche überlegte mir, wie ich die Eindrücke am besten aufzeichnen kann. Als Lightpainter hatte ich das Bedürfnis, die Dynamik des Tanzes in Lichtspuren umzuwandeln.
Dabei fiel die Wahl auf die App „Slow Shutter“. Mit dieser App ist es möglich, die Belichtungszeit frei zu wählen. Damit bin ich bestens für Actionfotografie ausgerüstet.
After queuing for a long time, we were lucky enough to be offered seats in the third row. During the performance, I didn't want to use my smartphone to block the field of vision of the audience sitting behind me, so I had a few heads from the audience in the picture, which I cropped out in post-production. This reduced the size of the images. The resolution should still be enough for the Internet.
Nach langem anstehen hatten wir das Glück, dass uns Sitzplätze in der dritten Reihe angeboten wurden. Während der Vorstellung wollte ich mit dem Smartphone nicht das Sichtfeld des hinter mir sitzenden Publikums behindern, also hatte ich einige Köpfe aus dem Publikum im Bild, die ich in der Nachbearbeitung herausschnitt. Dadurch wurde die Größe der Bilder reduziert. Für das Internet sollte die Auflösung aber noch reichen.
My goal was to capture the dynamics of the dance by leaving blurred lines in the picture. In order to blur the actors in a targeted manner, I needed a longer shutter speed.
The settings for the “Slow Shutter” app are relatively simple:
- Recording mode: light trail
- Light sensitivity 1/32
- Shutter speed bulb
- ISO 100
When you press the shutter button, the recording starts; when you press it again, the recording stops. The challenge is to keep the smartphone as still as possible so as not to blur the entire image.
Mein Ziel war es, die Dynamik des Tanzes durch Wischspuren im Bild festzuhalten. Um die Akteure gezielt verwischen zu lassen, benötigte ich eine längere die Verschlusszeit.
Die Einstellungen der App „Slow Shutter“ sind relativ simpel:
- Capture Mode: Light Trail
- Light Sensitivity 1/32
- Shutter Speed Bulb
- ISO 100
Nach Betätigung des Auslöse-Buttons startet die Aufnahme beim erneuten Betätigen wird die Aufnahme gestoppt. Die Herausforderung war es, das Smartphone möglichst still zu halten, um nicht das gesamte Bild zu verwischen.
I like this blurring effect. It creates the illusion of a painting from the Impressionist period. The colored stage lighting further enhances the atmosphere.
Diesen Effekt des Verwischen mag ich. Vermittelt er hier doch die Illusion eines Gemäldes aus der Zeit des Impressionismus. Das farbige Bühnenlicht verstärkt die Atmosphäre zusätzlich.
Conclusion
With a little willingness to experiment, you can also get usable pictures with your smartphone that are far outside the mainstream. I'm excited to see what photography tools I'll get my hands on in the future and what results I'll get with them.

Mit etwas Experimentierfreudigkeit erzielt man auch mit dem Smartphone brauchbare Bilder, die weit Abseits des Mainstreams einzuordnen sind. Ich bin gespannt, welche Fotowerkzeuge mir in Zukunft noch in die Hände fallen und welche Ergebnisse ich damit erziele.

What Is Light Painting?
Light painting is a unique art form. As a rule, the darkness is illuminated by the artist with various light sources and traces of light are painted into the picture with various lighting tools. Various techniques are used, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. When using ND filters, this technique can also be used in daylight. All images were taken during a single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cropping and possibly adjusting the white balance, the images are not processed on the computer.
Lichtmalerei ist eine einzigartige Kunstform. In der Regel wird die Dunkelheit mit diversen Lichtquellen vom Künstler ausgeleuchtet und Lichtspuren mit diversen Lichtwerkzeugen ins Bild gemalt. Dabei kommen verschiedene Techniken zum Einsatz, wie Kamerarotation oder andere Bewegungen der Kamera während der Belichtung. Die kreativen Möglichkeiten sind nahezu unbegrenzt. Bei Einsatz von ND-Filtern kann diese Technik auch bei Tageslicht angewand werden. Alle Bilder wurden während einer einzigen Belichtung aufgenommen. Abgesehen vom Entrauschen, Schärfen, Beschneiden und eventuellem Anpassen des Weißabgleichs werden die Bilder nicht am Computer bearbeitet.
