24 Hours In York...

A couple of days ago I made a visit to York, my counties capitol city, founded by the Romans in 71AD, then known as Eboracum, a few hundred years later the Vikings then invaded and called the place Jorvic, in which the name York comes from.

I've been to York lots of times but I'd never stayed the night there, so I was looking forward to having a wonder around the ancient city at night.

It had been raining but I love wandering around after the rain, seeing the reflections of the light on the cobbled streets, and of course, less people as it was absolutely rammed through the day.

We were there on a birthday celebration, and we had such a fantastic time, we had a wonder around the city as soon as we got there, as I mentioned earlier it was absolutely rammed, I think it's due to the Easter holidays and the schools are closed for the next two weeks.

We did the tourist thing, and went in Cliffords Tower, I'd not been in there since English Heritage had modernised the interior and put in walk ways, how it has now changed inside, also the entry price too, the last time I went in it cost around £1.50 to get in (if memory serves me right), however it's not over £10 for entry, thankfully I'm already a member of English Heritage so entry was free, I wouldn't have paid over a tenner for entry lol.

On our travels we stopped at a little pub on the Shambles, the front room was so small it there was only seating for four people, I had a milk stout that was on draft there, it was absolutely gorgeous, I could have happily drank that all night, but we had a meal booked at a French restaurant, more on that later.

We also went in the Guy Fawkes in, the place where Guy Fawkes was born, for those not in the UK, he was a man that tried to blow up parliament, however he was unsuccessful, which is a shame due to the current shower of shit in there at the moment, not to get too political lol.

For tea, we booked a table at a place called Rustique, a French restaurant, I'd never really had French food before so was kind of excited to try something different.

So for dinner I had french onion soup, this was absolutely beautiful, and every time I think of it, I want to have some more lol, for main I had SOUPE À L’OIGNON, Classic French onion soup, made with beef stock and finished with cheese croutons.
For my main I had POULET FAÇON BRETONNE
Chicken breast cooked in a Brittany style with mushrooms, leeks, onions, white wine and tarragon creamy sauce, served with Dauphinoise potatoes.

Me and my girlfriend also had a French Martini.

My partner had PÂTÉ DE FOIES DE VOLAILLE
Chicken liver pâté, served with French bread and a sweet red onion marmalade for starters, and for the main she had JARRET DE PORC AU CIDRE
Slow braised pork shank, cooked in cider, served with coarse grain mustard mash and cider and apple sauce.

The food was exquisite, it was the best food I've ever had in my life, I highly recommend this place, and I really can't wait to go back to try more of the menu.

We headed back to the apartment, and had a good nights sleep, we were tired with all the food and drink, the morning after we did a bit of shopping and went to the world famous Betty's tea rooms for breakfast, had more of a wonder around York before our train home.

I can't wait to do it all again.

I really hope you like this post and the pictures, as I was going for birthday celebrations, I didn't take my camera, so all pictures shot using my Samsung S21 5G phone, in manual mode, then processed in lightroom and luminar flex.

Thanks for reading, have a fantastic easter everyone.

All the best :-)

What a great meal that was! Or must have been for you, had me salivating! I’ve been to York station twice but never the actual city. How daft is that?!

It was lovely mate, its certainly worth a visit into the city, just head towards the cathedral from the station.

Could be an easy trip up from London and a little jaunt to the cathedral.

I think there's a direct train from King's Cross, the Edinburgh run if memory serves me right.

Yes that’s right. I can remember getting a train into London, taking the underground and up I went. I changed at York to catch the train to Scarborough. That was a lovely little trip. I used to have a customer up there when I was contracting.

Stunning atmospheric photos!! York is such a cracking city with so much history. Glad you had a brill time celebrating birthday there. Cheers for sharing and have a bostin' Easter!
