Cirque

in Photography Lovers26 days ago (edited)

This is a cirque. The definition of a cirque is: An amphitheater like valley formed by glacial erosion, over many thousands of years. The word cirque is a French word, derived from the Latin word circus. This cirque, or the name of this hike is “Ptarmigan cirque”. Why is it called Ptarmigan you ask? It would have to be based on the kinds of birds found in the area. That being said, I didn’t see any birds around at all. Maybe they are more prevalent during the Summertime. No idea really. Does it even matter? No, not in the least! Hope your having good weekend, and preparing for the eclipse on Monday.

A cirque is a circus! I though circle but it might be the same origin.

In Spanish classes I learnt that "Arena" origins from el Arenal which is SAND !

Has something to do with a performance like atmosphere from an amphitheater. Thanks.

Nice pic. I learnt the meaning of a new word 'cirque'. Thanks. Very interesting to sèe this pic. The first pic when enlarged, to the right of it looks like a huge circular wood, though it is not. Its clearly visible in black and white photography. Amazing shot.

Thanks. These cirques are really cool, especially the closer you get.

Yes clearly visible in pics

Friend @daveks... Every day a natural wonder that surpasses the others!... This is magical landscaping!... BRAVO!

Magical is a good way to describe the kind of hike it was. Thanks.

Wow! That is impressive! You can literally see where the glacier was tearing it apart under all of the ice in the last ice age. Very cool! The mountains look great in those B&W, but those larch trees you need color to do them justice.

Indeed, yes. The larches are almost not worth making into B&W. Thanks for stopping by.

I don't think Henry could climb that hill

Henry is a wimp.

Tru dat

I saw Cirque de Navacelles in France 20 years ago. First time I had seen or heard that term.
Your photos are beautiful!

Thanks @melinda010100, have a good weekend!

Epic shot's, epic place. It amazes me how much beauty we got in this world but yet we still fight and divide each other, sad but thanks to nature we get to stay grounded, those that know anyway. Thanks for sharing my friend, I just took shot's of the SpaceX launch, so hopefully I got something good to share on that one day. Have a blessed rest of your weekend.

That must have been a blast! No pun intended. Thanks, and have great weekend too!

Well across my skies, not actually at the site. Although that would be a real blast to do.
