Grafarkirkja is the oldest church you can find in Iceland. Built in the 17-the century and it's a turf church, meaning the building method which is quite ancient in Icelandic standards. The original structure had preserved incredibly well and was re-constructed in 1950 by the Icelandic national museum.
It is surrounded by a circular graveyard, I'm not exactly sure who is buried there.
Even though this church is from the 17-th century, it is believed that there was some sort of church on the spot before that.
Sadly the church is closed and I wasn't able to go inside. It was open at some point but to preserve it, they decided to close it to tourists.
Did you know that Iceland is one of the last countries in the world that has been discovered ? The first settlers were Vikings and they arrived there in the year 874 and made the first settlement. If you think about it, Iceland's history is really young.
Also in the area is a cool-looking mountain I had to take a shot of.
Iceland is beautiful, love how the atmosphere in your pictures reflects my experience there too. I will post some of mine in the future.
The atmosphere in Iceland is something special.
So awesome
