Schnee! Und das im Winter!

Snow and Infrared

Der Schnee blieb also liegen.

Greetings, friends of the winter landscape. Snowfall is a rather rare occurrence in Berlin. It has been snowing on and off in the last few days. The temperatures are around freezing point. So the snow stayed put. On the way to the bakery in the morning, I took a few pictures with my smartphone.

After breakfast, I grabbed the Nikon Z5, screwed the 550 nm IR pass filter in front of the Viltrox lens and trudged through the heavy snow. As you can see from the pictures above, the companies that are paid to do the winter maintenance were once again completely overwhelmed by the situation. The employees were probably tossing and turning in their beds and dreaming about climate change and global warming.

Just because it snows doesn't mean that climate change has stopped. After all, this is the warmest snow since weather records began. But I digress.

Mein Weg führte mich zuerst zur Trabrennbahn Karlshorst. Dort war recht viel Betrieb. Es war Renntag, wie sich später herausstellte.

My route first took me to the Karlshorst trotting track. It was quite busy there. It was race day, as it turned out later.

I didn't see any spectators, but perhaps the grandstand filled up later. I then walked on towards Wuhlheide, a large wooded area. Or is that a park? Most likely a mixture of both, I would say.

In winter, infrared photography is not quite so easy. The deciduous trees have no leaves that radiate in the infrared range. And when snow covers the grass, there is not much left. So all that remains is the infrared radiation from conifers and the foliage of evergreen plants such as ivy.

More and more clouds gathered and then it started to snow again. I made my way home. By now, most of the snow had fallen from the branches of the trees, so it was perfect timing. I hope to be able to take more photos in the snow over the next few days. Until then, good light at all times.

WHAT IS LIGHT PAINTING?

Light painting is a unique form of art. The darkness is illuminate by the artist with diverse light sources and light traces are paint into the picture with various light tools. Various techniques are use, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during the exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. All the pictures were taken during one single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cutting and possibly adjusting the white balance, the pictures are not processed on the computer.

What a magical atmosphere :) :)
