Hokusai's The Great Wave off Kanagawa: Exhibition of Japanese woodblock prints, National Museum in Krakow

Today I prepared something very special for you. A report from a unique art exhibition of the works by Katsushika Hokusai.
I think I should start by explaining who is Katsushika Hokusai. He was a very famous Japanese artist who lived between 1760 and 1849 and whose work is still respected and admired all over the world.

Hokusai was born on October 31 and yesterday, on October 31, the National Museum of Krakow organized a special art exhibition of Hokusai work on the occasion of his birthday.
The exhibition displayed hundreds of works of Hokusai, including his most famous piece known as The Great Wave off Kanagawa (or simply just The Great Wave or The Wave).

Copies of this iconic woodblock print can be seen in some of the most prestigious museums and art galleries around the world such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art or the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne so I was really happy about the unique opportunity to see this legendary artwork here in Krakow.

The image looks simple and minimalist and yet, it´s very powerful and mesmerizing, depicting a massive ocean wave towering above three tiny boats. There is also the Fuji Mountain in the background. The highest peak of Japan, the Mount Fuji is one of the most common themes in Hokusai´s work and you can find it in many of his prints and paintings.

I was really excited about the exhibition and I took a lot of photos there so now, without further ado, let me share a bunch of them with you.
