Blood Moon of November 8 2022!

in Photography Lovers2 years ago

This last lunar eclipse of the year occurred at the perfect time to get some photos from Japan.
Starting with the penumbral eclipse around 5:00pm and the moon started to enter the umbra, or darker part of the Earth's shadow around 6:00pm. I had some concern as there was still quite a bit of cloud cover at 6:00pm, but the sky did clear up enough to get some nice shots afterwards.
The first picture is from the early part of the total eclipse when the moon had just entered totality.

At 8:00pm the moon was in the deepest part of the Earth's shadow. Once in the deep shadow of the Earth, the light that does manage to hit it and be reflected back to us, is first passed through the Earth's atmosphere. Blue light is scattered and absorbed but the red end of the spectrum continues through and causes the moon to appear in red and orange colours. The very same effect that gives sunsets and sunrises their beautiful red and orange colours.

These last two shots were taken about 30 seconds apart!
In the first we can see the left edge of the moon starting to brighted as the totality phase of the eclipse ends:

It's also my favourite photo from this celestial event!
Earth shine actually does illuminate the moon though it is almost always overpowered by the direct light from the sun. The moon is the 2nd brightest object in the sky, second only to the sun!

Below exposed for the bright section to not overload the camera's sensor, the barest fraction of the moon:

Such a beautiful arc!

I hope you were able to see the eclipse where you live, though if not, I do hope that you enjoyed my photos of it. For now we'll all have to wait for the next total eclipse isn't until March 14 2025!

Have a wonderful day!

Lovely photos. I tell you, this lunar eclipse messed me up big time. There were some weird energies that made it to the fore with this one.
