Exploring Reflections in Photography: A Creative Experiment

Photography is often about capturing reality, but what if we could manipulate that reality with simple tricks? Recently, I experimented with reflections using everyday objects, flowers, and dried plants. By incorporating mirrors and glass, I created abstract compositions that invite viewers to see something beyond the original subject.

To achieve these effects, I positioned the background upright and placed the plants on the mirror, laying flat close to it, to create strong reflections. The camera was aligned straight-on with the subjects to ensure the reflections formed clear shapes.

For the first images, I used a dark background with a black-tinted mirror. The effect of the mirror not only doubled the composition but also created a surreal and symmetrical visual. The contrast between the dark background and the light floral elements made the details pop, giving the final image an almost otherworldly feel. Looking at it now, I wonder—what do you see? A mystical creature, an intricate mask, or perhaps a figure from folklore?

Further images were achieved with a simple mirror against a colored background. The warm tones of the backdrop provided a vibrant contrast to the dried plants, which I arranged spontaneously. I was fascinated by how something as ordinary as a mirror could turn random elements into something so visually striking.

The last photographs involved a different approach—I used a piece of glass against a colored background. Unlike the mirror, the glass created a softer, more subtle reflection, almost like a ghostly imprint of the original subject. The transparency and layering effect resulted in a dreamy, ethereal quality. It was intriguing to see how light interacted with the materials and how the shapes seemed to merge and dissolve.

This entire process was incredibly spontaneous. I picked objects with interesting textures and let the reflections guide the final composition. It was a reminder that photography doesn’t always have to be planned—it can be a playful exploration of light, shadow, and perspective.

What do these images remind you of? Do they evoke a specific feeling or story? The beauty of abstract photography lies in interpretation, and I'd love to hear what you see in them!
