[EN\DE] Angels

Angels are an interesting concept. Altho I am not a religious person the fascination of angelic beings is still very interesting and a great inspiration for making art. But we have to keep in mind that what we mostly think of when we hear or read the word angel is a very humanized version. The description given by old texts like those from Dante paint a very different picture that probably would scare most people and are more like creatures from nightmares or horror movies.

Das Konzept von Engeln ist ein sehr interessantes Thema. Obwohl ich selbst kein religiöser Mensch bin finde ich den Gedanken an Wesen wie Engel sehr spannend und inspirierend für Kunstprojekte. Aber man sollte nicht vergessen das das Bild was wir von Engeln haben sehr vermenschlicht ist. Schaut man sich alte Texte an wie z.B. die von Dante so werden diese Wesen eher so beschrieben das sie die meisten Leute in Furcht versetzen und eher in Alpträume oder Horrorfilme passen würden.

The most obvious version of an angel is taking a real person and adding wings. Lightpainting offers very interesting techniques to accomplish that. In this version I first lit the model and added a shine to the floor where the wings will appear. Then put a stencil of wings in front of the camera and used an acrylic rod to paint the areas that the stencil does not cover and thus creating wings exactly where they should be behind the model.

Die naheliegendste Version eines Engels ist eine reale Person zu nehmen und ihr Flügel zu geben. Lightpainting bietet sehr interessante Techniken um dies umzusetzen. In diesem Foto habe ich erst das Model und die Umgebung beleuchtet und den Boden hinter ihr mit einem Lichtschein versehen wo die Flügel sein werden. Dann wurde eine Schablone von Flügeln direkt vor die Kamera gestellt und mit einem Acrylstab die offenen Stellen der Schablone ausgefüllt um die Flügel direkt hinter dem Model zu erschaffen.

Since angels are often described as beings made of light another way to create one is making it completely out of light. For this photo a stencil of a full angel was placed in front of the camera and filled with glowing fiber optics. Then the camera was placed on a tripod aligned to the scene and the surrounding was lit so that all the light came from the spot where the angel is supposed to be.

Engel werden of als Wesen aus Licht beschrieben, daher ist eine weitere Möglichkeit diese direkt komplett aus Licht darzustellen. Für dieses Foto wurde erst eine Schablone eines kompletten Engels vor die Kamera gestellt und mit einem leuchtenden Glasfaser Kabel gefüllt. Dann wurde die Kamera auf ein Stativ ausgerichtet auf die Szene gestellt und die Umgebung so beleuchtet das alles Licht von der Stelle ausgeht an der der Engel auftauchen soll.

You can also combine these two techniques and have an angel made of light bless a person. Angel was done like in the photo above and the aura on the model was created with a blue fiber optic brush.

Man kann auch beide Techniken kombinieren und ein Lichtwesen Engel eine Person die sie anbetet segnen lassen. In diesem Foto wurde der Engel mit der gleichen Technik wie in dem Foto darüber erschaffen und die Aura um das Model mit einem blauen Glasfaser Wedel.

Or you can go wild and make a more abstract angel out of other effects. I will let you try to figure out how this one was created, or if you are really interested just ask.

Oder man kann auch einen abstrakteren Engel erschaffen mit anderen Techniken und Effekten. Vielleicht könnt ihr ja raus finden wie ich dieses Foto umgesetzt habe, könnt aber auch gerne Fragen wenn ihr es genauer wissen wollt.
