Intro

On the fourth day of my trip to Tyrol, my plan was to take a longer trip to a neighboring valley. But first I had to conquer the Sellraintal up to Kühtai at an altitude of 2000 meters. Kühtai is a very well-known navigation point for planes flying to and from Innsbruck, and the name is very familiar to me. The way there and the mountains there are the content of this report.

Am vierten Tag meiner Tirolreise war mein Plan eine größere Reise in ein benachbartes Tal zu unternehmen. Doch zuerst musste ich das Sellraintal bis nach Kühtai auf 2000 Meter Höhe bezwingen. Kühtai ist ja ein sehr bekannter Navigationspunkt für an- und abfliegende Flugzeuge nach Innsbruck, mir als vom Namen her sehr vertraut. Der Weg dorthin und die Bergwelt dort sind Inhalt dieses Berichtes.

The Zirmbach gets smaller the higher I get, shortly before Kühtai it even loses its name and is fed by many smaller tributaries from the surrounding mountains.

Der Zirmbach wird immer kleiner je höher ich komme, kurz vor Kühtai verliert er dann sogar seinen Namen und wird von vielen kleineren Zuflüssen aus den umliegenden Bergen gespeist.

Looking back, I only now realize that I am already above the clouds, or in the clouds, only a few kilometers downhill was my starting point, which is now disappearing into the clouds.

Zurückblickend merke ich erst jetzt das ich bereits über den Wolken bin, oder in den Wolken, nur wenige Kilometer bergabwärts war mein Startpunkt, der jetzt in den Wolken verschwindet.

Kühtai

Many of you will probably know this place from your winter vacation, now in the middle of summer there is no snow and the whole infrastructure of winter sports activities is in a deep sleep. Concrete and large parking lots make me shiver, here you can already guess what's going on in winter. The surrounding mountains take it easy, they will still be there long after we are history.

Viele von euch werden diesen Platz wohl aus dem Winterurlaub kennen, jetzt mitten im Sommer ist kein Schnee und die ganze Infrastruktur der Wintersportaktivitäten liegt in einem tiefen Schlaf. Beton und Parkplätze in großem Umfang lassen mich erschauern, hier kann man schon erahnen was im Winter los ist. Die Berge ringsum nehmen es gelassen hin, sie werden auch noch da stehen wenn wir längst Geschichte sind.

Das ganze Gelände wird in den nächsten Jahren haupstächlich unterirdisch ausgebaut und damit eines der modernsten Kraftwerke Europas. Wer genaueres wissen will sei auf die Wikipedia (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kraftwerksgruppe_Sellrain-Silz) verwiesen.

I then continued on a beautiful mountain road in the direction of Oetztal. For me from the lowlands, this mountain world is something completely different. Every bend tempts me to stop and be amazed. The Inn Valley can be seen far below me, with a thin layer of dense clouds above. And much higher then the mountain peaks with another layer of clouds.

Weiter ging es dann auf einer wunderschönen Höhenstraße in Richtung Oetztal. Für mich aus dem Flachland ist diese Bergwelt etwas ganz anderes. Jede Biegung verleitet mich zum Stehenbleiben und zum Staunen. Weit unter mir ist das Inntal zu erkennen, darüber eine dünne Schicht dichter Wolken. Und noch viel höher dann die Berggipfel mit einer weiteren Schicht von Wolken.
