Black-winged Stilt on the Makadikadi Pans - Botswana

in Photography Lovers3 years ago (edited)

I was in Botswana recently and headed up to Nata Bird Sanctuary for a night to see the Makadikadi Pans that were beginning to flood with all the rain that had been falling. This brings an abundance of bird life to the area and I was caught up for about 45 minutes watching this little Black-winged Stilt hunting for something to eat.

The Black-winged Stilt is a common resident when the Pans are full carrying the Latin name Himantopus himantopus.

They have black and white plumage and long red legs. Adults may have a dusky crown as seen with this bird that I captured. They often call while they are in flight with a loud 'kik-kik-kik-kik-kik-kik'.

When in the shallows as pictured, they will be seen wading while looking for food.

This was the first time I have seen the Makadikadi Pans full like this. For those that love photographing birds this is a dream destination. The cost is reasonable to stay for the night with lovely hot water in the campsite.

This is so, so, so beautiful @serowa ❤️
We are lucky to benefit from your patient photography skills.

@consciouscat Thank you so much. You know, so many landed up being discarded with slight movements which made part of the bird blurry. I was in between in awe of seeing the pans in flood for the first time and knowing the sunset was about to become dramatic but feeling the need to take some pics while I was there 😂

😍 Beautiful! Thanks for sharing one more with me 🙏

Great photos. Looks like a small bird, how close where you able to get?

@new.things Thank you, yes, these little birds are about 30cm in height. I was fortunate to be sitting in some tufts of grass and it walked quite close to me which was great, I only had the 70-200 lens on the camera.
