Trail along the lake #wednesdaywalk

Ice on shore

Ice on the shore of Lake Dunmore with Mount Moosalamoo in the distance.

Blue skies

Today's #wednesdaywalk (hosted by @tattoodjay ) is a science walk.

Crashing ashore

The sheet of ice that forms on the lake exerts incredible pressure on the shore. There is an excellent description of ice berms in this article ice berms explained

Up close

Lots of stuff going on in this picture... doesn't really move my narrative forward but I liked the picture 😊

Trail

I walked along this lovely trail today which led to my interest in learning more about ice berms. This trail is created by the ice on the lake!

Berm

You can see in this picture how the ice has pushed up this berm over time creating a nice walkway 🙂 I always thought these trails along the shore of lakes were man-made or at the very least made by lots of foot traffic over the years. They are actually a berm pushed up by the ice over time.

Island

The great thing about trails along the lake are the great views. There is a small island in the middle of the lake. I haven't been out on the ice this year and might have missed my chance because it was 60F yesterday 🙄

Thanks to @ackhoo and @qurator 🙏🙏

Cool pics... yesterday it was warm, today it's -4°F, maybe your last chance to go to this island 😀

Thanks 15F here today. Interesting getting to that island. It is privately owned and the owners are a little crazy lol plus loons have a nest there and so there is a group of conservationist that try to keep people off the island. I have never been. I've been close in a kayak but thats it.

A real mission impossible to reach this island 😀

The owner has some land that borders my property and he marks every tree on the property line with a red painted line. Some people mark a few trees as property line markers or put up some red posts as markers. This guy marks EVERY tree 🙄

Have you tried painting a green line on one of his trees and just filming his reaction discreetly? The video should be worth a watch 😀

Nice to see the moss is doing well in the cold. I think your cold weather front mixed with a warm front right over Chicago and caused a good 4 tornado touchdowns and nonstop lightning.

Yeah lots of moss in these photos 😊 We only got strong winds. And temperature dropped like 40 degrees.

Wow this looks like a gorgeous place to chill. And the view is awesome as well!

Thanks. Nice place to wander thats for sure.

I'd love to live there
