Work Life - On tips received while working in the hotel industry: rewards for doing things right. / Sobre las propinas recibidas durante el trabajo en hotelería: recompensas por hacer bien las cosas. 😃❣️

Every time I tell people that I'm a traveler who manages long stays in cities thanks to the work-for-housing exchange modality, they are amazed. After that moment of admiration, the next question is imminent: 'and how do you pay for your trip?' My answer to this question is always that I have a job on the Internet, 'I work with the computer', and after a 'that's great, congratulations' the inquiries about it are over. But the truth is that in addition to my 'computer work', this last time my trip was also paid for in a small way thanks to the same guests who find me kind to their queries and decide to show their appreciation thanks to their occasional tips 😅.

Cada vez que le cuento a la gente que soy una viajera que logra estadías largas en las ciudades gracias a la modalidad de intercambio de trabajo por alojamiento, ellos quedan sorprendidos. Después de pasar ese momento de admiración, la siguiente pregunta es inminente: '¿y cómo solventas tu viaje?'. Mi respuesta a este interrogante siempre es que tengo un trabajo en Internet, 'trabajo con la computadora', y después de un 'que bueno, felicitaciones' se terminan las consultas al respecto. Pero la verdad es que además de mi 'trabajo con la computadora', este último tiempo mi viaje también estuvo solventado en pequeña medida gracias a los mismos huéspedes que me encuentran amable ante sus consultas y deciden demostrar aprecio gracias a sus ocasionales propinas 😅.

Most of the people I've met throughout this trip have been transient travelers who do their best to manage their finances well and see as many beautiful places as possible. This is also what I do myself, and that's why I travel on a volunteer basis, exchanging a few hours of my day for accommodation and food. This allows me to spend my money on excursions, tickets to nearby towns, dining out and other expenses as they arise. I can't complain about it, it works pretty well for me and that's why I want to keep doing it for a while longer. It's been almost four years since I started this blog and since everything is going well, I can finance my walk with it almost entirely ❣️.

La mayoría de la gente que me crucé en todo este paseo han sido viajeros de paso que hacen todo lo posible para administrar bien sus finanzas y conocer la mayor cantidad de lugares hermosos. Esto también es lo que hago yo misma, y por eso viajo trabajando de modo voluntario, intercambiando unas pocas horas de mi día por el hospedaje y comida. Viajar así me permite destinar mi dinero en excursiones, pasajes a pueblos cercanos, salidas a cenar y a otro tipo de gastos que surjan. No me puedo quejar de esta modalidad, funciona bastante bien para mí y por eso quiero seguir haciéndolo un tiempo más. Ya han pasado casi cuatro años desde que inicié este blog y como todo sale bien, puedo financiar mi paseo con él casi en su totalidad ❣️.

But besides having my Hive income, in all these months traveling I also came across some people who showed me their kindness in the form of tips. Of course these tips are just a small contribution to my daily economy, but we all know that money is never too much. Usually the tippers are the older people, and with them I feel in complicity because they give me money on the sly as if I were the granddaughter or something. In this last time working at the hotel I was a bit bored because I didn't meet young travelers to go for a walk, but on the bright side I interacted with several older couples who when they checked out almost always left me some money. Good for me because it meant that my kind treatment was valuable ❤️.

Pero además de tener mi ingreso de Hive, en todos estos meses viajando también me crucé con algunas personas que me demostraron su amabilidad en forma de propinas. Por supuesto que estas propinas son solo un pequeño aporte a mi economía diaria, pero todos sabemos que el dinero nunca está demás. Generalmente los que dejan propinas son las personas mayores, y con ellos me siento en complicidad porque me dan dinero a escondidas como si fuera la nieta o algo así. En este último tiempo trabajando en el hotel estuve un poco aburrida porque no conocí a viajeros jóvenes para ir a pasear, pero el lado bueno es que interactué con varios matrimonios de gente mayor que al hacer su check-out casi siempre me dejaban algo de dinero. Bien por mí porque significa que mi trato amable fue valioso ❤️.

I have often been on the guest's side in my previous trips, but now that I am on the other side of the counter as a receptionist in the accommodations I have learned many things. Most people who come to these places intend to have a good stay while they are out and about, perhaps on their only vacation of the year, so being greeted by a person who treats them well is essential. I learned to be functional to this position and I always greet everyone with a smile, I am interested to know where they come from or where they are going, and many times they tell me personal things that I listen to attentively. But what these people ask me the most is to help them to connect to wifi and turn on the TV to put Netflix: as many older people still do not fully master the technology, they always ask for help with this and my patience with them is what they end up thanking me for 😊.

Muchas veces estuve del lado del huésped en mis viajes anteriores, pero ahora que me toca estar del otro lado del mostrador como recepcionista de los alojamientos aprendí muchas cosas. La mayoría de las personas que llegan a estos lugares pretenden tener una buena estadía mientras están paseando quizás en sus únicas vacaciones del año, por lo que ser recibidos por una persona que los trate bien es fundamental. Aprendí a ser funcional a este puesto y siempre recibo a todos con una sonrisa, me intereso por saber de dónde vienen o a dónde van, y muchas veces me cuentan cosas personales que atentamente escucho. Pero lo que más me piden estás personas es que los ayude a conectarse a wifi y a prender la tele para poner Netflix: como mucha gente mayor aún no domina completamente la tecnología, siempre piden ayuda con esto y mi paciencia con ellos es lo que luego terminan agradeciendo 😊.

One of the most commonly seen banknotes in circulation in Argentina is the 1000 ARS, equivalent to 1 USD. With our current inflation, this bill has less and less power, so it is easy to 'drop' it for tips. I have received tips from 1000 ARS just for taking a photo of guests, and up to 5000 ARS for turning on the TV every night. Once I also received 2000 ARS just for carrying hot water for mate. Of course this dynamic makes me work with more desire and sympathy, because I want 'my guests' to notice that I treat them well and that they feel it's worth leaving me an extra gift: so far it's been going pretty well and I hope it continues 😅.

Uno de los billetes que más se ve en circulación en Argentina es el de 1000 ARS, equivalente a 1 USD. Con nuestra inflación actual, este billete cada vez tiene menos poder, por lo que es fácil 'soltarlo' para las propinas. He recibido propinas desde 1000 ARS solo por tomar una foto a los huéspedes, y hasta 5000 ARS por prender la tele todas las noches. Una vez también recibí 2000 ARS solo por cargar agua caliente para el mate. Por supuesto que esta dinámica hace que trabaje con más ganas y simpatía, porque quiero que 'mis huéspedes' noten que los trato bien y que sientan que vale la pena dejarme un regalo extra: hasta ahora viene saliendo bastante bien y espero que continúe así 😅.
