Porsche Design Studio + IFA Berlin 2016 - Designer Chronicles, Vol. 3

In order for brands to become recognized as a global icon sometimes its best to collaborate with a brand that has already established a name for itself. To leverage the "What's in it for us?" we promised to provide an exclusive model with ramped up specs and a new market segment for additional sales revenue. Sounds pretty good. OK now which name brand would be the perfect brand fit and product market fit for our very first brand collaboration project?

We chose Porsche Design.

The timeframe is September, 2016.

When you check out Porsche Design website above, in their portfolio work it showcases the projects Porsche did that is more premium design related. Porsche Design is not just about automobiles in this studio. The brand itself expands to product design, mobility design, apparel, space design and so much more. Most people know Porsche the car such as 911, and today we will also learn there is also Porsche Mobile Phone. It all started with the Huawei Mate 9 Series.

My Design Marketing Work - A Recreation of the Mate 9 Porsche Design with CAD Modeling and CGI Rendering

Being in Berlin for business trip along with the executives our schedule was back to back in line with Product Launch Exhibition, Leica HQ Tour, and next on the list was visit to Porsche Design Studio F·A·PORSCHE located in Berlin.

dream.jpg We came in early so we can take a good look at what its like to be a design studio in Germany with a premium name tag. This studio definitely showcases Premium Design History, Perfected German Craftmanship, and Bold Honest Design Details.

This was a very exciting time for myself personally because as a product designer my college degree major was transportation (automobile) design. Its a dream to think of how a mobile phone designer has come to a point where I get to meet designers from Porsche Design.

What a great way to end the day with some good food and company.
It was a great start and had good vibes with everyone that day.
I totally passed out in the hotel.

IFA BERLIN 2016 - Internationale Funkausstellung Berlin

September 1st, 2016 IFA Berlin here we go.

Internationale Funkausstellung Berlin otherwise known as IFA Berlin is one of the major tech events of the year. It is an event that allows exhibitors present their latest innovations and products to the world.

check.jpgFinal Marketing Material Presentation Check before the Event

IFA2016Berlin.jpg Original Photo Source

Lets begin with the product launch presentation. One of the main work I have contributed aside from phone design was creating launch presentation decks with marketing team. I always have a lot of fun doing these and when I get to see it on the big screen its feels pretty good that I was able to bring value to the table.

model.jpg

macs.jpg
Look at all those macbooks... Steve Jobs would be proud.

press.jpgA lot of people from the press came in to see the upcoming mobile phone company that will soon challenge Samsung and Apple.

band.jpgI always enjoyed working behind the scenes of an event.

2016 was a special time for Huawei mobile phones because the company was ready to go totally global. Meaning there was a high budget for marketing and advertisement. Our phone line ups were ready to show to the world... we were very well prepared.

ceo.jpgThis is where my work comes in... looks so huge! Been working on it from a standard monitor 1080 x 1290.

KSP.jpg Here are some examples of how it really looks like before it went to the final CEO presentation. Everything detail is taken into consideration and needs to be refined, color tuned, detail enhanced to make sure it looks as close to the real phone on hand.

SENSOR.jpgWhen both photography and CGI is combined we need to make sure the components are presented in a realistic way and also for the viewer... easy to understand when the technical illustration is presented. This was one of the most difficult but most fun part of marketing material creation for me. Because I love CGI. :)

ceoo.jpg Looking at it from here looks totally like an iMAX experience.

present.jpgPeople can check out the phone on site I believe it left a Good Impression for the European Market

Keep in mind this was the last phones of just solo Huawei brand. The next phones were to be branded together with Leica and Porsche Design. So we needed to make a statement and go big in presentation.

Before the start of the event I was already inside and helping my boss for checking the deck to see if everything was on track. I was nervous as well and hoped that everything went smooth operator.

Check This Out!~

Official Huawei Mobile Twitter Feed in 2016

This image I just got it from the Huawei Twitter feed which is the event presentation I contributed with other team members. What is really crazy now that I see it is that in 2016 Huawei was still globally a nobody. I can clearly see it by the Twitter feed I just discovered... check out the retweets and likes.
Tweet.jpg
Original Twitter Source
With a good blog post anyone from the Hive Community can get better upvotes than that. Amazing how little it was retweeted and only 21 likes... and this is from the official Huawei Tweet. We cannot compare to how Huawei phones are marketed today. Its in a totally different league.

Its truly amazing how the company climbed up the global ranks so fast from nothing witnessing this first hand is a something I dont think I will forget... and it was not by accident or luck. Everyone committed a lot of time, blood, sweat, and tears to get to where it is now.

I do miss this dynamic workstyle now that I think about it. It is only now as I write up the content and by reviewing the photos I realize so much how crazy, fun, emotional, and dynamic my everyday was during the time. It just went so fast I cannot remember just by memory.

Huawei, nice company, had an interview with them once but didn't end up there. Remember to pack your socks on the next trip.

Nice man~ which office location were they offering you at the time? I was supposed to be in Shenzhen China but relocated to Shanghai for the next 4 years starting on 2014. Wow its amazing how time just passes so quickly.

Yup!!~~ I did a lot of business trips and always bought socks for some reason. Wow... there was a time where I went on a biz trip with new leather boots on.... My ankles skin area was all peeling off with sore water blisters because the leather was too new and hard. Daayymm that was a lesson learned! Never wear new leather boots to a biz trip!!! LOLZ!

The results today was indeed the evidence of the effort by the company. There is nothing like setting our strategic plan is achieving a particular goal.

Collaborating with an established brand already with a good name is a sure path to for a new brand to be recognized 👌

The project is awesome 😎👍, I will be on the lookout for the next episode.
Weldon friend 👌👍

When I look at the phones today and how popular it became there is a sense of pride in me that a part of my life helped contribute to this company. It was so funny in the early years because no body knew what brand name Huawei was and my friends and family were telling me to be careful of a no name company might kidnap me to become a slave..... I was like.... ummmmmmmmm... what da... reallY??? LOLZ.

Wow, man. Huawei really ran up the ladder. Look at the engagement on that tweet in 2016. Seriously, if I tweet this post, I can get more engagement. In fact, I'm gonna do it. We'll see what happens!

I'm looking forward to your next post. I'm interested in the sneak-peek!

Yea right? The engagement tweets on those were like close to none. I could probably write a post with my eyes closed on Hive and get higher votes than that. hahahahahahaha. But it sure tells us that everyone and everything has to start from the bottom up. There is no such thing as a free ride homie~~ Set Da Tone!!!

That's very true. They have also worked hard to get this far and they have been rewarded for their hard work. Set Da Toneee!

Wow! Huawei phones are doing really well in the global market today and to think that I'm talking bro one of the designers right now is so overwhelming really.

Indeed this didn't happened by mistake, it took a lot of hardwork, sleepless nights, pains and many more. I want to commend you specially for playing your role well in giving us Huawei today.

You are a really hardworking fella and I'm really impressed by all your work, they are just so creative and unique every time, I'm surely coming back to read the next episode 😎😎.

In today's market Huawei really did some good improvements to combat Apple and show the android phones can also be premium and high-tech as well. Maybe quality wise it was actually even better when I look at the details now. It was a sure way to compete with Apple and Samsung at the time.

How to compete with already high premium players? We set the goal to be even more advanced and premium than what they did. Create the Porsche of phones, if its gonna be a camera then better be the best camera out there right? :)
Can't believe we actually pushed it through. hahahahaha.

I haven't used thar Huawei phone before but I've a lot of people giving really nice reviews about it. And I think it truly got the market astonished by its amazing features, that was incredible though and it's really so good to see that a company can actually make efforts to making sure a difference in the tech world.

That's right, the ability for your company to collaborate with an already made name was a brilliant idea and it's a good thing everything played out well.

Better believe it because it did happen, hehehe.

Aigoo😯😯😯😯, you are at it again heheeh. Wow I agree with you that it is good for an upcoming company to collaborate with a long existing company who has created a name for itself, it is actually beneficial to the new company as it will be carried along in the business world sir..

You clearly stated it, collaborating with a long existing brand is the best way to carry the new one along...

I see you there, you aren't looking bad sir, I recognized @whangster79 the moment I saw him in that all black wears❤️❤️❤️❤️..

Huawei is indeed one of the best phones in the world, even here in my country it is one of the most cost phones but it is worth every penny spent on it starting from the RAM and ROM which makes it more special..

Ohhh yeah I saw those MacBooks, they are one hell of PC, I have only seen it being unboxed but haven't touched it Sir, seeing it in use just lighten up my mood which is indeed great...
I really enjoyed the analysis and content..

Looking forward to the next phase sir...
PIZZA!

"Aiigooo" hahahahaha~ did you just try to speak in Korean? In Korean that means "ohhh my". Thats pretty hilarious! The entire join venture with Leica & Porsche Design I thought was really a cool idea. The crazier part is that how we actually got to execute it in reality. I remember when there were talks about this idea... it almost sounded too much wishful thinking and day dreaming. But when we all decided to push it though a work it out department by department. Wow... that was really magic happening in the making.

What sounded like a joke was actually pushed through. This is what I love about working in corporation is that when the boss man says lets go.... we all march!! And dont turn back~ With thousands of people working together amazing things are bound to be achieved. :)

Huawei phones used to be cheap, however after competing with the big boys we couldn't go cheap on materials and this is where prices started to go up. But the crazy thing was that when prices went up... sales went even higher up. Crazy.... lolz.

Aye aye that is the man speaking lolz😂😂😂❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️, ohhhh yeah that is me telling you **oh my ** in Korean, I am one hell of k- drama fan and I am learning to speak some simple catch phrases in there hehehehehe 😂😂😂...

Oh yeah you idea worked out perfectly and now you are everywhere and that is cool sir and when there is a let's go in the game, oh my we need to march together and make success out of it and that is what you did exactly...

Huawei phones live up to their names and now it is one of the most highly purchased phone everywhere, is that not cooler❤️❤️❤️❤️...

It was a beautiful work you guys put up together, it deserves some accolades and some standing ovation ❤️❤️...

Hatsoff sir @whangster79....
Rock on sir..
The sky is your starting point ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Huawei was the First Smartphone I used and it was Awesome experience.

Now it seems like kinda a lot of challenges are there for Huawei like heard they now have a own OS without Google after the mess or restrictions market is quite down.

Happy to see your contribution and experience. Never heard of Porsche mobile design looks dope tho.

Dayum, Everywhere i see, I only see MacBooks !LOL

Wow~ That's really cool! a Huawei phone was your first one? I wonder if I worked in any of the ones you had. That would be pretty amazing. :)

Yes there are a lot lot of challenges for Huawei however theses challenges are just so good that it brought its reputation to get even better. The phones are so good that countries needed to ban them. It was actually a full on free marketing which back fired. Yes they need to also make their own OS due to google pulling out. But as you can see... once again they pulled it through by creating their own OS. That company can do some crazy shit because the employees there are fearless. Any challenge is good enough to prove they can work around any problem... We were trained that way.

There is more to show and tell~ so stay tuned!
Thanks

Even though I'm no fan of Huawei, hats off to you for pulling off such an epic launch!

I remember I first came across Huawei many years ago when the UK mobile network was built using their products. That propelled them to the global platform until they were deemed a danger to national security some years later. I imagine thats when they had to focus on the consumer market with mobile phones. They are lucky to recruit talent like yourself to build their brand

I learned in UK there are either people who really like Huawei or completely anti. and from this what I found out is that this makes the product even more popular compared to when products are just "ok" from both sides. The national security part was a wrench thrown in a completely fine running engine... I was already out of the company when that happened so I don't know much detail of what happened inside the company.

The company when I joined was just starting out the B2C (business to consumer) strategy coming from a B2B background. and I got to visit UK Office as well. :) I do like UK. Wish I stationed there... maybe in my next life. hehehe.

Yes, you’re absolutely right. In order for brands to gain more recognition, it is better they join forces with an already established brand, and of course, they do this on the terms where both brands benefits. Well, I don’t know much about brands, but I’ve been lucky enough to work with a few.

I’ve never used an Huawei phone, but I’ve heard so much about it and I pretty know that it is one of the bests phones.

Obviously, you’re working very hard. It is nice to read from you, looking forward to your next post.

Thanks for sharing.

Yes you are correct, if both brands agree to the terms that will create a win-win then you got yourself creating a new product lineup along with getting exposure to both markets.

Funny thing about designers is that when I worked for a company I tend to not use the company products in order to understand other products features. A lot of devices I like to use is usually around its functionality. Now its harder than every because when it comes to function most of them are implemented in Apps. 😅 Thanks for your comment~

these phones looks amazing👍you are part of it who did something😄

Huawei phones are really so amazing. Since I started using smartphones, Huawei was my third. And comparing it to my two other devices, the features of Huawei are really great. Until now, I am using one. Have a wonderful day my friend.

If you have tried using the camera function I am sure that you were pretty impressed because a lot of the software tuning was done inhouse and not a third party. There are many functions that did impress me however since google has stop providing the os I am not sure how the functions or user interface changed in the recent years. I hope its still as great as when I used it. Thanks!!

This Post has just revealed how good you are in creating designs, it is even more interesting that you studied automobile design but phones design is what got you more good.
You have greatly contributed to many Innovation work.
True, Huawei phones are incredible, that is for sure.

My journey is for sure an interesting one... not the usual path one would take. Being an automotive designer does help when we need to emphasize aesthetics in play. Automotive design is really about how to freeze motion in time and a lot of the time the sculpture itself is very directional.. meaning its pointing in a direction. However product design tends not to have this and mending them together is for sure something fresh and fun to do.

Nice detailing of the cell phone man. Degin is impressive.

I think that is was separated us from the rest of the crowd at the time. While Apple was going for the ultimate simplicity we wanted to go with a design language that was more expressing bold characters and its own design personality.

I like huawei brand. I used a couple of cell phone of that brand. Good quality and cheap.

Collaborating with Porche degin seems a good idea. It's a renounce company. Working with reputed company brings trust and help to know as globally. Though Huawei is already famous in India.

I am not familiar with India region with mobile phones because I heard that the normal marketing style does not work there. As a result when iphones are the most popular and premium in most countries, India in particular is known to think apple is not the best and its overpriced. Very interesting ~ I also heard the Huawei brand in India was a big success too. Thanks cool~ Thanks for droping by.

Yeah the review is from middle class people because they want good budget cell phones.
But higher class has demand of apple. Man we are 1.3+ crore people here.

Wow, a nice look inside the ropes at the Porsche Design studio. It always surprises me how cheap the Huawei phones are in comparison to the competition. The Germans are great for the beers and the food looked decent too. Good memories.

I couldn't take too much detail of the studio and out project work at the time due to the project being a top secret at the time. Huawei phones were divided into 3 categories which the first one being the top of the line limited edition series which is like the Porsche Design Limited Edition Mate Series which can be at $2700 USD range. https://mobilemall.pk/mm/usa/huawei-mate-40-rs-porsche-design
The second category is the flagship models which is competing with current Apple and Samsung phones. The third category is made for the general masses which is beating the competition through price. It was like this during my stay in the company however it may have changed its strategy.
German food was pretty good especially downing it with the beer together. hehehe

Ah yes, beer and food always a good combo in my experience! Those limited edition things always seem expensive, but then they can become rare and become collectors items in years to come.
