BETA DETAILS : ARENA GAMEPLAY - BATTLE SCREEN EXPLAINED

ARENA is our PvP (Player vs Player), turn based, active gameplay that will mark the Beta launch of MuTerra.

In this post we will be talking about things related to the battle screens of ARENA and how they can affect your mutee selection, moves and strategy.


TL;DR

Once you enter the ARENA league and hit the battle button, 15 secs will be given to you to choose the best mutee to take into battle (from your shortlisted mutees).
After the battle starts, 10 secs will be given per round to choose the mutee ability you want to fight with. The last player standing wins!


Now without any further ado, let's get into the details.

NOTE : The screens and images below are placeholders we made to assist us while we coded the back end. The final front end is still in works and will be at a whole new level with better designs and amazing UI for great User experience.

MUTEE SELECTION

In the previous post this was the last screen that was explained :

Pre-battle preparations end as soon as you hit the battle button and enter the league in which you want to fight in.

  • 15 secs are then given to select a mutee to take into battle from the shortlisted mutees. These shortlisted are the ones you brought into ARENA during pre-battle preparations.
  • Depending on the league you entered in, you'll be asked to select 1 to 5 mutees, where rookie league allows only 1 mutee for battle and semi-pro & pro leagues allow you take 5 mutees in battle.
  • The terrain you'll be fighting in and additional battle rules will be mentioned in this screen too. Based on these details/restrictions/battle modes, choose the best mutees to take into battle within 15 secs!

The following screen's UI is not yet complete but this will give you an idea about what to expect :

In the above image these are the following things to be noted :

  1. Your short listed mutees.
  2. League you are going to battle in : Rookie League.
  3. Number of mutees to be selected for battle : 1.
  4. Terrain Type : Grass (this means that plant element mutees will get a buff)
  5. Count down timer : 15 secs remaining before the battle begins!

BATTLE SCREEN

So we have been experimenting with how the battle screen should look like while the mechanics are being coded in the back end. (At the time of writing this post, the back end is around 80% complete.)

The screen needs to show quite a few details and needs to be interactive as its an active gameplay where the players need to select the abilities and even check different stats of mutees in real time to make the best decision.

It started off like this :

But let's not get into all that right now. This post is meant to give details about all the data present on the battle screen.

So let's get into it right away!

BATTLE SCREEN FIELDS

For the purpose of providing an easy explanation, we will use the following image :

All the fields marked from A to G have been explained below.


A. TIME

  • A battle between two players can last for 1 or more rounds.

  • Each round lasts for 10 seconds. Both players get to select the ability they want to use and the target during that time.

  • Players get 30 seconds of reserve time. If one of the players takes more than 10 secs to submit the ability, their reserve time gets used up. Beware! If you use up all your reserve time, you lose!


B. ABILITIES

  • Each mutee starts with 2 default abilities
  • As the mutee levels up, it can learn more abilities.
  • Existing abilities can also be replaced with new abilities.
  • Within the given time limit of 10 secs, the player needs to choose one of the abilities (to attack or defend or apply buff or debuff).
  • Once the ability is selected, the player will then need to then choose the target and hit confirm.
  • Each ability has a type, element, stamina cost and power.
  • Opponent's mutee abilities are hidden and only gets revealed once it has been used in the game. So play smart.

C. STATS

  • The most important stats to look out for are HP (Health points) and SP (Stamina Points). If either one of them hits 0, your mutee loses.
  • Apart from the above two, the other stats that affect the battle are -
    • Level
    • Speed
    • Size
    • Strength
    • Spirit
    • Resistance
    • Armor
    • Type
    • Tamer Ability

We will discuss about them in detail in the next post which is about the damage formula.

  • Stats of any mutee can be checked during battle by just clicking on it.
  • Tamer stats are also revealed to both parties, which includes any buff the tamer is giving and it's level.
  • Tamer level also acts as mutee level cap.

D. BATTLE LOG

This portion gives you the details of what happened during a particular round :

  • Which mutee attacked first and used what ability.
  • How much damage was given and received.
  • Did someone surrender or switched a mutee.
  • Did a mutee die or run out of stamina.
  • Who won

E. TERRAIN

Terrain affects both attack and defense of a mutee. If you use a fire element mutee in a water terrain, say, a beach, your fire mutee will not only take more damage but will also have reduced attack power.

The terrain type will both mentioned and depicted in the background through an image. We will show quite a few terrains in the next post.


F. MUT POOL

This is the amount of MUT the players wager at the start of the battle. This amount is revealed during the start of the game so that both players know how much they will get if they win in addition to the reward given to the winner from the game.


G. SURRENDER $ SWITCH

A player can surrender at anytime during a battle. Surrendering a game will cost you your wagered MUT and the stamina that was used up to start a battle.

Sometimes this option can be strategically used to save your mutee's stamina and health from a hopeless battle.

In higher leagues, where more than 1 mutees are fighting, a player can switch out a mutee that's battling for a better match up. But this action costs 5 tamer stamina! So use it wisely!

END GAME

The game ends if one of the four things happen :

  1. A player surrenders.
  2. All the mutees of a player run out of stamina.
  3. All the mutees of a player die (0 HP).
  4. Reserve time hits 0 and player doesn't submit any ability.

Their default abilities and stats will be revealed later along with all other mutees.
