It all started with a till slip, a Win a Trolley Dash box, and a one-minute stop to fill in hubby's name and cell number, and drop the slip into a box. He would have walked right past it if wifey was not there ;)
To give you a bit of back history, I used to be an incorrigible competition enthusiast, and used to win some really nice prizes, big and small, through magazines and radio shows - that was long before online competitions and those dreaded scams, which turned us into diehard skeptics. I was not going to let this opportunity pass us by, but we forgot all about it.
About a month later, hubby received a WhatsApp message stating
Your till slip was drawn in our recent competition and I wanted to find out if you work at Queensburgh Centre or in any of the stores.
He only responded the following day as we both were a tad skeptical, but thinking rationally, we knew that we indeed had dropped that slip in the trolley dash box, so no one except us and the organizers knew about it.
His response as a silver-haired gent, of course, was -
No, I am retired.
To cut a long story short, we both were finally convinced that this indeed was no scam, and chose the Pick n Pay supermarket as it had wide aisles and stocked appliances.
Being given only two minutes to fill a trolley with ZAR5k worth of goods, meant you had to choose your aisle carefully and make a dash for it, so we both went there the day before. Hubby as a retired engineer believes in careful planning, even wanted to take measurements to make sure large appliances would fit in one trolley.
This wasn't necessary in the end, as the oganizers placed an extra trolley at one end, just in case.
Our hearts sank when we arrived at the store, as there were queues at every single till right in the path he had chosen as the quickest route.
We however were greeted by a lovely young lady who made sure hubby was well prepared, so she walked him through the appliance aisle, with the shopping mall and store manager as well as me tagging along. I was allowed to take photographs, and so I thought, yay, perfect for a #marketfriday post!
Indemnity forms had to be filled i.e. should the contestant be injured during the dash, they would not be held responsible, goods damaged once chosen, could not be replaced etc. They thought of everything in that form, sensible of course, as some people would simply mow down everything in their path to fill that trolley!
The store manager made sure the packers and shoppers stayed clear of that aisle for just those two minutes.
The young lady in charge of the trolley dash very kindly made the starting point at the beginning of that particular aisle, with the appliances way at the other end.
The stopwatch started, and hubby headed straight for the television set; fortunately, he thought ahead and took our television license along, which had to be produced at the till.
Next into the trolley was a microwave oven, and a rechargeable emergency lamp - we have load-shedding here in the good old South of Africa.
For those who do not know what that is, you would call it planned power outages, very annoying and doing much harm to our economy!
On the other side of the aisle were costly Olive Oil and Canola Oil, so that was added to the trolley!
The last appliance was a compact but powerful vacuum cleaner, and with a couple of seconds to spare, he had to dash past shoppers to grab our favourite dark roast Italian filter coffee nearby.
Excuse me...excuse me...sorry...
The perfect gent as always.
With only five seconds left, the final target was the biltong stand just around the corner, and he made it!
Looking very pleased with himself, he had time to get his breath back.
The rules were, the dash had to be done within two minutes, but once the items were chosen, he could take his time and decide what would be rung up; no going back and changing once it went through the till.
The friendly cashier started ringing up the items in the order he chose, and the prize went ever so slightly over the ZAR5k.
There were only a couple of small items that did not make it through the aisle, but we gladly paid for those afterward.
What an absolute treat to have someone else pay for a trolley filled with goods!
A huge thank you to Nicolette from the shopping mall marketers for the prizes and for making this such an exciting experience, and to Pick n Pay store manager and the Queensburgh Shopping Mall manager for making sure hubby everything ran smoothly!
A last goodbye to the shopping mall manager and our lovely young trolley dash guardian angel.
Even though the lovely Denise is on a well-deserved vacation in Saint Lucia, somewhere in the Caribbean Sea, lucky lady, we're still shopping, so this is my contribution to the weekly #marketfriday challenge,
Happy Thanksgiving to all my friends celebrating this day, enjoy the football, fellow fans, and have a fabulous weekend all, see you at the market next week!

Congrats Lizzie and well done to your hubby for being so well prepared with all the planning.
You seem to be on the roll with contests, ranking at the top on the World Cup game!!
Ah thank you @livinguktaiwan, we were kind of skeptical especially when the store was so busy when we got there! 2 minutes really is not much time, but hubby did very well!
Today's football has been full of upsets so I think I'll be dropping down the ranking 😕 I make my choices based on hubby's advice. It's truly a great game, very exciting 👌
Enjoy the rest of your weekend 💕
Congratulations on your win. Hope
Oh man this is Soo cool. I'd love to win something like this. I never have such luck. What a bonus for you and some great purchases in there. I love how super prepared you were.
I never thought of how the competition landscape would have changed. I know people used to make quite a but from it but it was also quite strategic. Didn't think about how scammers would have impacted that.
It was a real treat @riverflows!
The very first prize I won was a trailer which hubby was really chuffed with as we were doing renovations, so it worked really hard!
Funny how I had more time during my working years to enter, am never off duty now, but I'm going to start making time for contests again😜
It's really awful how people can be so gullible to believe some of the scams!
Have a great weekend further 🤗
Oh I had two scam calls today. It made so mad. Wow... A trailer! That's super cool!
Oh my, this is so much fun! I saw some videos like this all over the internet and I really want to try it myself for the experience! 😂
Wow, you got a lot of good stuff there! Can't imagine this all happened in 2mins but your partner is really good at it. 😅
You really should give it a go when you see a trolley dash contest, it was a load of fun😅
Fortunately all the appliances were in the same aisle.
It was a big surprise and lovely experience all round 😊
I should practice so when the time comes I'll be ready hahaha
