JavaScript as a go-to language for conducting online experiments

in StemSociallast year

JavaScript is a powerful programming language that has become increasingly important in the world of web development.

While some new programmers may have reservations about learning it due to familiarity with a preferred languages that is perceivably easier, such as Python, it is worth considering the many benefits that come with mastering JavaScript.

Don't be blindsided!

As a researcher, one of the key advantages of JavaScript is its versatility when it comes to creating online experiments. In particular, JavaScript can be highly flexible when combined with HTML and CSS for creating online studies. This is because JavaScript can work directly within a browser to make use of its existing capabilities, making it easy for researcher to let their imagination run wild and create interesting web-based research studies.

Online experiment design tools, such as jsPsych, lab.js, OSWeb/OpenSesame, or PsyToolkit, are useful for designing and running online studies. While some of these tools are Python-based, the majority seems to be based on JavaScript. Even better, if the researcher is competent in using JavaScript, they can write entire experiments using HTML, JavaScript, and CSS, allowing them to have complete control over the design and functionality of their studies.

Online studies would likely continue to be a trend post-pandemic, for the simple reason that people are more open to doing stuffs remotely. Fortunately, websites like JATOS (short for Just Another Tool for Online Studies) provide a platform for researchers to set up and run their own studies on their own server. With a little time and effort, anyone can learn to use JavaScript to create compelling and innovative online experiments.

In conclusion, while JavaScript may not be everyone's go-to language, it is a valuable tool for conducting online studies. If you are looking to conduct online studies, JavaScript is a go-to language for conducting online experiments!
