We have already heard about ships that get lost in the frozen vacuum of space, but what happens when the mystery happens right here on earth, that is what happened with the “possible” mission, an experimental capsule from the exploration company, a young European company that decided to challenge space giants like SpaceX and Boeing.
The result was a capsule that entered orbit, completed its flight, survived re-entry into the atmosphere and in one of the most critical moments disappeared into the sea. It all began at the Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. The capsule was only 2.5 m wide, but it carried an enormous weight to demonstrate that Europe can launch a fast, cheap spacecraft ready to enter the heavy game of orbital transport.
It traveled as cargo on a SpaceX falcon 9, the same flight that carried 70 other payloads and even human remains for a space memorial, everything happened as planned, nominal separation, stabilization in orbit, controlled reentry and contact reestablished after atmospheric blackout, but then the critical point arrived, the moment of landing in that phase the parachutes purchased from the same supplier that equips SpaceX's Dragon capsules, had to open between match 0.8 and match 0.6 decelerating the capsule for a soft landing, but something went wrong.
Minutes before hitting the ocean, the communication disappeared, no location, no response, for a mission that cost only 20 million dollars and was built in 2 and a half years, losing the capsule is more than a loss, it is a risk that exposes the entire ambition of the Exploration Company, for the European space industry that is still in its infancy compared to the United States and China, the possible mission is seen as a technical success.
Structurally, the ship resisted re-entry, navigated autonomously and survived the most critical part. What was left pending was the end of recovering the capsule and returning the payloads and although it may seem like a detail, it is precisely that stage that demonstrates whether a space transportation system is commercially viable or not, while they try to understand if it was a failure in the parachute, a navigation error or simply bad luck, the startup is already thinking about the future.
The NYX, a more advanced and reusable cargo ship that will be able to carry supplies and one day astronauts from the earth to the moon, for that to become a reality Exploration Company seeks the strong support of the European space agency and a model similar to the one used by NASA to boost SpaceX and make the manned spacecraft viable.
