I decided I wanted to try my hand at chicken keeping! I have absolutely zero experience with keeping chickens, so I started by looking at the different types I liked the looks of.

I came across the Black Copper Maran. They lay the most beautiful dark brown eggs!

Here are some of the reasons i decided this could be my chicken of choice...

The Black Copper Marans: A Jewel Among Chickens

When it comes to backyard poultry, few breeds evoke as much admiration as the Black Copper Marans. Renowned for their stunning appearance, hardy nature, and production of some of the darkest eggs in the chicken world, these birds have become a favorite among chicken enthusiasts and gourmet chefs alike. But what makes the Black Copper Marans so special? Let’s delve into the unique qualities that set this breed apart.

A Brief History of the Black Copper Marans

Originating from the Marans region of France, the Black Copper Marans were initially bred for their utility rather than their appearance. These chickens were developed by crossing local French breeds with game birds, which contributed to their hardiness and strong, muscular build. Over time, they were refined into the breed we recognize today, with their distinctive black plumage accented by copper feathers around the neck and back.

The breed gained popularity in France in the early 20th century, not only for its robust nature but also for the exceptionally dark brown eggs it produced. The Black Copper Marans quickly became a favorite among French chefs, who prized the rich color and flavor of their eggs. Their popularity spread beyond France, and today, they are cherished by poultry keepers around the world.

The Allure of the Black Copper Marans

One of the most striking features of the Black Copper Marans is their appearance. These birds are truly eye-catching, with glossy black feathers that shimmer with an iridescent green hue in the sunlight. The coppery feathers on their necks and backs provide a beautiful contrast, making them one of the most visually stunning breeds of chickens.

But it’s not just their looks that make them special. The Black Copper Marans are also known for their calm and friendly temperament. They are generally easy to handle, making them a great choice for backyard flocks, especially for those who enjoy interacting with their birds. They are also good foragers and relatively hardy, able to withstand various climates with ease.

The Darkest of Eggs

Perhaps the most celebrated trait of the Black Copper Marans is the color of their eggs. These chickens lay some of the darkest brown eggs in the world, often described as "chocolate" or "mahogany." The deep color of the eggs is due to the high concentration of pigment, known as protoporphyrin, which is deposited during the final stages of egg formation.

The color of the eggs can vary, with some Black Copper Marans laying eggs so dark they appear almost black, while others may produce eggs with a lighter, reddish-brown hue. The eggs are not only visually striking but are also highly prized in gourmet circles for their rich flavor and thick, creamy yolks.

Raising Black Copper Marans

For those interested in raising Black Copper Marans, there are a few things to keep in mind. While they are generally hardy and easy to care for, they do have a few specific needs. First, they are active birds that enjoy foraging, so they do best when given access to free range or a large run where they can scratch and hunt for bugs.

Their dark eggs are a big part of their appeal, but achieving that deep color requires careful management. The darkness of the eggshells can lighten as the laying season progresses, and older hens tend to lay lighter eggs. Providing a well-balanced diet, particularly one that includes sufficient calcium and protein, can help maintain egg color and overall health.

The Black Copper Marans are truly a gem in the world of poultry. With their striking appearance, friendly demeanor, and production of some of the most beautiful eggs you’ll ever see, it’s no wonder they have captured the hearts of chicken keepers around the globe. Whether you’re an experienced poultry enthusiast or a newcomer to the world of backyard chickens, the Black Copper Marans are sure to bring beauty and joy to your flock.

Those eggs are dark. We just have one hen now who does still lay. We may get more some time. They can be fun, but are prone to dropping dead! We've never had chicks though.

If you have copied text in this post from somewhere then you ought to give the source before the 'police' come calling.

Yes my friend has warned me about the dreaded dropping dead habbit! Not looking forward to that! I wanted to try hatching them myself just because of my love for animal husbandry. But we will probaby buy some point of lay hens too.
Duly noted, thank you for the reminder... disclaimer added! 😊

Despite the eggs being dark, the chick that came out looked so adorable haha🥰

Haha 🤣 thank you! I cant wait to see how they grow
