I always knew I would have cats, but the past few experiences were too painful to pursue them again. My first cat died, and then I had to give away my second cat. After that, it had been months of trying to live on my own, and sometimes, when you're just alone for a very long time, it can get lonely. And I was.
The uncertainty of settling down or being able to bring them to the next place/destination I plan on living had always held me back from getting a new pet. Despite my old friend wanting me to adopt one of his new litter around October last year, even after meeting "Curry" in person, I decided to reject the offer despite my heart wanting to say YES. This was the time when I was moving on from heartbreak.
\
Fast forward to the second week of January, I had thoughts about Curry for a few days. It was some premonition. One random day, my friend informed me that no one had adopted Curry yet. And with just that, I said, "I'll take her." No what-ifs. I finally gave in to yet another impulsive choice in life. That day, I immediately went to the store to buy cat food, litter, a litter box, and toys. My friend and I decided to meet up the next day to pick up my new pet.
It felt right.
I expected Curry to be very shy, fearful, and timid. She had lived with three other cats, and to be taken away from them was absolutely new and probably heartbreaking for her.
The first three days and nights were a struggle. She didn't eat any food I prepared for her. She would always hide in a corner. I made a makeshift bed for her under my wooden bed table so she would sleep near me and get accustomed to me, and somehow, it did work.
On the second day, I had to leave her alone because I had to go to the gym for my regular workout session. I was so confident everything would be fine until it wasn't.
I arrived home; however, I didn't see any trace of her. She wasn't on her bed, under the table, or in the corner of the bed where she used to hide. She wasn't even at the backside of the fridge.
I panicked!
I frantically opened my cabinet, my cupboards, and drawers. I checked the toilet too! Nothing. I was contemplating whether she had escaped my room and gone outside, but I was so sure my door and windows were locked, and I had definitely seen her before closing my door shut when I left for the gym. I even called my younger sister and asked if she had dropped by my place and seen my cat, but she hadn't.
I called my friend and told him what happened. I was on the verge of crying and was already telling him I messed up. On our call, he reassured me that Curry likes to squeeze into tight places, and so I rummaged through my entire place—from under the pillows, through my folded clothes, even on top of the cabinets and cupboards despite knowing she wouldn't make it up there. I even asked my friend if she could pass through the drainage in my shower! I now realize how stupid that question was. I searched high and low, but to no avail.
I ended the call with my friend with no luck but assured him I'd find Curry no matter what.
I took a pause and thought about the few seconds I had opened the front door and remembered hearing her collar bell making a sound. It was a faint sound, but it was clear that it was coming from my bathroom. I went inside again and realized that there was a space at the backside of my toilet. I grabbed my phone and took a photo with the flash on. And when I looked at it, I gave a huge sigh of relief.
No wonder I couldn't find her anywhere!
I was actually thrilled to wake up in the middle of the night and watch her explore my room, but this time around, I made sure to close the bathroom door.
The next couple of days, Curry eventually warmed up to me. She started eating and drinking every night when I was asleep. However, she wouldn't say NO when I offered her treats. That's when I got to pet her.
Later on, as we started to get close to each other, I decided to change her name. From Curry to Honey.
It's been more than a month now since I had Honey. She is sweet when she is in the mood. She isn't the cuddling type but when I told her that I like it when she would stay close to me while I worked, she actually started sleeping on my desk! She likes chin scratches and when I scratch near her tail. She doesn't sleep on the bed with me. She mostly hide in my cabinet to take a nap but sometimes I would find her on on my work table or dining table in the middle of the night. I find her adorable when we play. Lastly, its so easy to bathe her and clip her nails!
Honey definitely added some color to my dull life and I can't wait for her to go on adventures with me.
